Calls have been made several times from this number, each time it only rings once. Any voicemail is just the sound of a call centre, no message. Getting fed up now!

I actually cancelled my O2 Contract the other day and just got a missed call from this number. Reading all the other comments here it's obviously from O2, probably trying to convince me to not cancel!

Have a look at this: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/telecoms/silentfaqs/

This page by Ofcom explains why these calls happen and why they are silent. The advice at the end is to report the number to your service provider and to themselves. There's no guarantee that they can stop any overseas call centres (which is probably where these losers are), but if we can put enough pressure on the SPs and regulators, they may get the incentive to act. I am now receiving at least 1 call a day from these w@nkers and I just don't answer. I won't answer any 0845 number.

called the number back and its the o2 lady at the other end saying its a courtesy call and there is no need to call them back. YOu can call o2 cust services 2023 from your mobile. So I think it is legit.

O2 gave me a welcome call, and only that - to make sure everything was working. Nobody tried to sell anything - including insurance, which I had refused instore. It's a SIM only contract.

Yes, it does take a while to get connected.  One computer will begin calling numerous new customers, and when that call is answered, then you are connected to an operator. It just saves them waiting on you to answer your phone, which takes up her time.

Operator was very polite, although she was quite obviously reading from a set script.

Can I just make a few comments on this.

I picked up and they went through security questions (which were related to my phone contract). The guy told me how to set up voice mail and took my e-mail address (the worst thing I gave them), but also had very detailed information on my bill (that I'd spent a certain amount before my network went live). They then tried to sell me insurance, said I wasn't interested. This little [***] then called me a 'knob head' under his breath, which I went ballistic about and he hung up.
Called 02 back-said it wasn't them and they were aware of such scams.
I think people are missing the point here though. Even if it wasn't 02, it is still their fault. Under the data protection act they should NOT be giving out such detailed information to 3rd parties under any circumstance. I am investigating this (because I am a belligerent 'knob head')and will post a definitive answer when I'm through. I would like to ask everyone though, did you all get your phones from carphone warehouse? I also would not trust posts that say 'its ok, don't worry', because the scammers themselves could easily be posting on here too.I'm looking at Tom 5 Jan 2009.

I have spoken to 02 about this as i have been receiveing a lot of these calls, apparantly it is a company called 'Opal' (if i remember correctly) they claim to be from 02 and try to sell insurance, upgrades etc. But he 02 have informed me they are nothing to do with them at all so do not give any personal details. There are also companies you can register with to have your number taken off. If you speak with 02 they are happy to help.

mine is from O2 and I only got it yesterday - so they must be providing our phone numbers to whoever is making these calls. I've not had a chance to give anyone my number yet.

Right then, I just called the number fom my work phone and its a o2 customer care phone call to see if everythings ok, fair enough, but, to charge me 4p, yeah I know its 4p but when they call 4000 people a week, its not just 4p is it! :)

Call o1 customer services and just say nicely "I'm looking my bill here on the o2 online billing site and see that I was charge x amount, then say I called the number back and found out it was a curtasy call" let them speak and they will most likely say they will refund you the amount with no hastle, like thay did with me, so all I said was yes please and it was done, the guy was actually really helpfull and well spoken, good to see o2 are a shot above the rest!
