- Yun replies to PatDid you ever go to the appointment?
- B-Edwards replies to PatMight be ID theft, but it could be flat out extortion as well. Lots of loose ends.
- Willow80000% scam, do not fall for it.
1. The Consulate never calls anyone.
2. It was 7am when they called, consulate doesn't open until 9.
3. I speak Chinese, I can tell from the guy's dustinct heavy ascent that he is from Fijian, hometown of many such telemarketing scammers (no offense).
4. I hung up as soon as he opened his mouth, should have played dumb and followed his stupid story to get more info.- Caller: Chinese Consulate in NYC
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- NeverbeentochinaStrange number to sooof but there is NO reason for the Chinese embassy to calll me
- Caller: Chinese embassy
- Janet| 1 replyI got this phone call from a machine speaking Chinese. They said this is regarding an important document, and to press 1 or 2 for various options. I speak Chinese, have a New York area code, and it seemed plausible. I didn't quite hear the options so I press 1 where it got transferred to a woman. The woman said "Hello, may I help you?" in Chinese. I asked her in English why they're calling me and she hung up on me like I was prank calling her. It seemed like the machine part was spam and it got transferred to someone oblivious to all this.
- B-Edwards replies to JanetYou are close to getting the structure of this scam. These is what is called a Robo call. A computer dials the numbers and plays the part about the "important document". If you press the number that leads to a rep, the scam proceeds. I am guessing all the numbers lead to a rep in this case.
This is probably a version of the IRS scam, you are told you owe thousands of dollars and are about to be arrested and tossed in to the slammer, unless you pay up NOW over the phone. The call probably originated in China or India. You got the Chinese version since the BIG Computer that has your info says Chinese is you first language.
You were called by a real bottom feeder, this is an old tech version of Robo call. The new ones are voice interactive, and fool a lot of people.
Ignore the call, block the number. Don't bother trying to tell the rep that they have the wrong person. They could not care less, they know they are cooks and will take money from anyone. - xiaobaiI got a call from same number on Sunday and today. It was from a machine recorded voice saying "You have an important document needs to be picked up immediately" in Chinese, and asked me to press 1 or 2. I pressed 1 and it was redirected to a rep. The rep asked me "how can I help you" in Chinese, I told her the case, then she told me it's Chinese consulate asked me to provide my personal info so she can look up in her system, that's when I realized things were suspicious: the Chinese consulate officers do not work on a weekend or holiday, and if they call me they usually already have all the personal info. Also I heard the background noise from her "colleagues" (playing the recorded voice " you have an important document...", I am sure it's phishing call... I asked the woman to look up my personal info using my phone, she said you'd better come to the consulate and check your document tomorrow... I hang up.
- nycI just received a call from this number and the automated message was all in Chinese. Then a man picked up and started to speak to me in Chinese and say "I love you, you are [***] beautiful". He waited for me to hang up "please hang up now" with a very thick Chinese accent. I told him I was calling the police and he eventually hung up after 2 minutes or repeating the same thing over and over again.
- Maryanne replies to NikkiMe Too! Woman calls speaking chinese and it's the consulate number.
- MaryanneSame here. Some woman left a voicemail on my phone, in chinese!

- BrendaJust got a call from this number about 15mins ago.... They didn't leave a vm either. Once I looked it up, I knew they had the wrong number cause it says it The Chinese Consulate. I am a Black American woman who I believe would have no reason to receive a call from them, lol.

- Cole| 1 replyI received a call from this number thirty minutes and puzzled over it.
I did not pick up and there was no message left. Yet this was unsettling given the turned out to be the official number listed as the official institution --Chinese Consulate in NY, with which I should have no business with whatsoever. How and the caller --whoever it really was--got my number and why they targeted me somehow keeps me up all night. Hope this kind of phishers should be busted very soon. - derbWell, I got two different number called with the same thing, the other number is 212 244 9202
This must be a spoofing call because my phone number just active on last month and my personal stuff such as bank account still using my old phone number.
In my experience with different consulate, they wont call you until you have make a appiontment and they wont ask for your personal information even your name.- Call type: Scam suspicion
