PURE SMART SCAM because they are using real telephone number of China’s Consulate in NYC to show up on caller ID..they can only get you when you press and # when you receive call and then call is answered in boiler room Fijan co-callers.  If you actually call the number you will get the consulates office.   NYC CONSULATE is like DMV   - you go to take care of obtaining visa-passport, pick a number ticket and get call to a glass window ans submit ur doc..if you r good, u return to pick up visa; also different locations for different matters  this is for visa/passport.. if u need info on education for example different phone number and location..their main goal target are non english speaking chinese people to scam:  also you must know how to speak english working at consulate office,,this ia why they hang up immeditely when u soeak english

i got the same call from this number. It's scam...blocked caller.

I got a call from number (212) 244-9392 at 6:30 this morning.  I listened to the message and it was a woman speaking Mandarin.  I celled the number to request that they not call me any more and got a very officious sounding man.  He would not give me his name and said something about a death threat.  The number is from the Chinese Embassy but sounds frightening.  I have never been to China.  I called the FBI and ICE.

This number left a message on my cell in Chinese

I received 3 calls for the past hour, first was from 212-868-2078, the second was "unknown" and the last was from 212-244-9392. All were recorded messages in Chinese. I am trying to grt in touch with someone who happens to be chinese so i thought this was her and so i tried to answer each call. Anyway, i tried my luck  and googled the numbrrs and both are listed as chinese embassy in NY as well.

Most definitely suspicious. But im trying to find out how they got my number (other than random dialing), and i realized i ordered chinese food yesterday online, and gave my number for delivery purposes.. so maybe, that might be one source..

Anyway, im blocking those numbers now...

I answered the call. It went to a recorded message in another language which I suspected was Mandarin. I guess I was right. At the end of the message they hung up.

I have the same problem.  When I pick up my cell somebody s[poke Chinese.  I have no idea if I have to block this phone number

Received 30 calls from this number within 15 minutes into my voice mail. Total scam!

I have a Massachusetts number. Just got a call from this number and they left a voicemail of a recorded message with a woman speaking in Chinese. Sounds like a scam for sure.

I got a call from this number and they did leave a message...in Chinese. Mandarin, Cantonese or other dialect I cannot tell you. I have no business w/ the Chinese consulate, presumably they are trying to scam immigrants spoofing this number.

Received phone call from NYC consulate saying that I had an important document package that I had not picked up. This I am banned from leaving or entering the country. Not sure if they meant China or US. I will try it out as I am actually going to travel.

good for you! I got a call from this number today that there is an important doc for me at the Chinese embassy.  feeling puzzled, I googled the number. it looked a phone spam. Did you call FBI?  if so, what did they respond?

The same number called me today and I can CONFIRM that it is a SCAM!
Similar to Pat's experience, it was a pre-recorded Chinese message saying that I had an important message from the Embassy. When I pressed '1', it took me to a person who said that I was under investigation from the Chinese entry / exit department because of potential money fraud. He then connected me to the Chinese police department so that I could file a police report. I checked the # and it matched the Chinese Police Bureau's, so they have some method for rerouting the call. He said that I could potentially face charges and jail because my identity had been used to open fraud bank accounts in China, after which he started asking for a lot of my personal information. I gave him my passport number but nothing else, since it started to feel very suspicious. I hung up and called back to the Chinese Police Department, who promptly told me this was a scam. DO NOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!

A typical Chinese scam for your money. They call faking the Consulate number and everyone in the scan is all fake! The news is all over Chinese media!

Got a robo call from 212.868.2078; selected 1. A guy claiming to be from the NY Chinese Consulate asked me for my name. I was confused at first because I'm a Caucasian who happens to speak Mandarin and who has a 10-year PRC visa in my US passport; I thought it might be related to my visa status. But I asked him again why he needed my name, and he said he couldn't investigate the matter unless he had my first and last name. I told him I wasn't Chinese and didn't understand because I didn't speak Chinese well enough. He then hung up on me.
