Yes. The whole process is similar to what Pat (12 Jan 2018 posting) has detailed.
They will provide information such as a formal government document which described that  you have some sort of legal trouble because your personal identity info has been stolen.  The story line is similar to what Pat has shared, except this time is about a fake passport which cause you legal trouble with Migration & Immigration Service at the Beijing Airport.  The  alleged person who fabricated 5 fake passports with other's identity info was a Chinese American, Ms. Wenli Deng.  They also want to be helpful to connect you to the Chinese police department so as to provide you further assistance.  Upon further inquiries of their identity and work-related info, the person over the phone even gave you a fake name and work id #, in the pursuit of being more convincing.  When discuss you need their formal job title in English (for reporting to local police department and FBI), they hung up the phone.  Apparently, the scam is trying to make people nervous and "share" information with their "police" whom they wanted to connect you to.   I've received this scam info on July 1, 2018.  Apparently, this scam has been going on and will continue.

I am feeling stupid because I got so scared when they told me my identity was used for some financial fraud in China and I have become one of the suspect. I actually went through the whole thing about talking to the police locate in Beijing etc. And gave my passport information (name, DOB, and passport number) as part of the filing process. Now I am really worry about my identity being used without my authorization.

I got a call from my cell this morning and left the recorded message. I called back and heard a Chinese woman who mentioned another NYC phone number as 212-868-2078. I called this new number and heard another recorded message and mentioned the address of Chinese General Consulate in NYC as so and so number on 12th Ave and 13th Street if I remember right. Surely this is a made up address since i know CGC is located on 42th Street as every knows. It is a phone scam for sure. But how could whoever makes such scam left the recording and our government does not do anything yet since January this year!

This has happened to me.  Some lady called, claiming to be the Chinese consulate, and said someone tried to enter China using my passport (the lady had 5 different passports and was in trouble with Beijing Authorities). I almost fell for it, too. Although, when the scanner asked how that person got ahold of my passport, I helpfully said “identity theft.” The reason why I eventually got suspicious is because they kept saying the name on the passport is my Chinese name, but I don’t use that name for ANYTHING, as that is not my legal name. They then proceeded to say that I needed to deal with the Chinese police. I then told them that I was in the USA. How could I possibly call them? I bet to “finish” the scam, they would give me some fake number, ask me to call, and I’d eventually reach the “police,” who will proceed to fine me. And plus, when I dialed the “1” to get to the live person, they had no idea why I was calling, which should make it suspicious, too. If the embassy was calling, they’d know what it was about. They even gave me a fake “case number.” I ended the call by asking for their number and saying I was at work. They gave me the real Embassy’s number. But reading the other posts, I guess it is fake.

I just got a voice mail from this landline to my NYC cell with prefix 347. It was a recorded message of a female speaking Chinese, of which I have zero ability to understand. The voice mail was no doubt triggered by me not answering (I did not answer only because I have a problem with my phone not always ringing.) I do not speak Chinese and have virtually zero in my life relating to Chinese culture. They are clearly spamming a wide range of numbers because there is no way, nothing in the records related to my phone number, that would indicate I would be able to understand Chinese.

My mother got a call from this number saying that she was in trouble with the Chinese government. The caller said the incident could be covered up if she wife’s money to the call. I believe this is a scam and I reported it to the FTC. Best of luck. No name for this number.
