Your hospital or physician office practice should notify you at the time of discharge or your visit that you could be called potentially for survey, regardless if it is HealthStream or any other survey vendor asking for feedback on the quality of care they provided.   The survey's sole purpose is to improve the quality of care at their facility (period).  Read your paperwork, most likely it states this, if not, then I would call them to say, you should have told me this so i could opt out, etc.

How did HealthStream get my info:   Hospitals only provide to HealthStream, your name, phone number, place of discharge and the date of your vist, that's it!  The survey asks you about the quality of care from registration to how clean the room was, the food service, doctor communication, nurse communication, safety, etc.

Answering Machines:  Interviewers are not allowed to leave messages, as to protect the patien'ts privacy.  That is also why the interviewer must speak to the patient first, before revealing they are calling about a specific visit, to protect the patient's privacy.  HealthStream has nothing to hide, they have been in business for 20 years and works with hospitals all across the country.

How did they get my phone #:  The phone number you provide to the hospital/office practice is the number that is given to HealthStream.

Caller ID:  If you call the # on the caller id, it will take you to a recording of who is calling you and give you a brief explanation.

Do Not Call List:   Research companies are not part of the do not call list.  Your number is not bought, it is provided to us by healthcare facilities, genuinely seeking feedback to the quality of care they provided to you, to help improve.

# of times they call:  Each # must be exhausted up to 5 attempts, this is a rule by CMS, not HealthStream.   The results of these surveys help provide consumers information with regards to healthcare decisions and see the scores publicly reported on www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov
If you do not want to be called by HealthStream, you can ask them to put you on their do not call list and they comply every time, but if you don't pick up, they have to exhaust your # with those 5 attempts.  
Also you can tell your hospital or physician office practice that you do not wish to be contacted by a survey vendor and they should have you fill out a non-publicity form so you can opt out if so desired.  Your hospital or healthcare provider should be notifying you at the time of visit that you could be called.
Ultimately, the feedback you provide is to benefit the patient and hold hospitals accountable for the quality of care they provide.  It is not a scam, it’s not a sales call.  I can understand being paranoid in this day and age, just wanted to ease any fears.

Called our home twice, no message first time, we picked up the second time because we are on the do not cal list.  Person identified himself with healthcare company taking a survey. I told him we were on the DNC list, and he said they were exempt because they are a healthcare company?  I told him to please take the number off their list, and am now registering this complaint.  

This is a HIPPA violation, by law, we are not to disclose any medical information to anyone we do not know!!!

Started calling yesterday and again today.  No ID.  I'm glad others have posted to this already.  Thanks.

They were involation of the Hippa Law. I specifically, checked off in the hospital no sharing with any outside agencyand/or program.

This number called me today wanting me to do their little survey on the hospital I go to. Well I answered their questions only because they were not personal but the man I talked to didn't seem to like the fact that I am in school to be a Medical Assistant and am currently learning about how what he just did is against HIPAA.

NO! You do not have to maintain a DNC because you work for a evil and corrupt system that is our medical system. THAT is the reason you do not need to maintain a DNC. Lets not insult my intellegence, ok?

3 rings. Left no message. Annoying. If someone calls & doesn't leave a message than it is definitely not someone worth talking to. I tagged mine with a ringtone I use & put them in my contact list as Don't Pick Up. Even on National Do Not Call List doesn't help. Keep reporting these annoying people.

This is from a market research firm asking for ratings for a prior hospital stay or encounter.  It is not a bill collector and it is perfectly withing the HIPPA regs.

They leave voicemails on my phone that sound like someone breathing.

Call from 301-575-9366. Googled HealthStream. This is a company trying to get info from dissatisfied patients. They use the dissatisfied info to compel doctors to (pay HealthStream) to update their OSHA and other compliance type training. They are looking to make a buck off the Dr's and whatever you say. May be a good thing, maybe not. I'm not answering their calls either way!

5 TIMES !!! I was discharged from the hospital on November 22, 2011. That number has called me every other day for the past 6 weeks !!!

This company called me four days ago, but my phone company didn't let it ring through to me.  Phone company sends me email of all my calls, including missed ones and one's they block.  They automatically put this caller into my Spam folder.  No ID, just the phone number and location of Laurel, MD.  Thanks for this site!  Now I know what company tried to reach me.  Right now, I've clicked on 'Block Caller' for this number and from now on, when this company phones me, they will get an operator that tells them my number is disconnected and no longer in service (even though, of course, it is in service.)

You all might want to get Google Voice.  That's what I've had for almost 2 years - I give out my Google Voice phone number (instead of my home and cell numbers) to doctor's offices and any company because most companies these days sell their phone lists or hand them over to surveyors and I want total control over who can ring me.

Yes, I work for an insurance company (aetna, dear god does it suck) and hippa would not allow a provider releasing info like that...

i too am being bothered by this company.  i am a health care professional and i would think this is a violoation of our hippa rights, patient/doctor confidentiality????

I have been receiving phone calls from this number too. I never answer calls from unknown numbers. I fugure if it's important they will leave a voicemessage. I di, too, have a surgery 2 weeks ago and the calls started after that. I just simply put them on my blocked number's list (Verizon W.). Don't ever answer calls from unknown numbers because as soon as you do it you verify that your phone line is active and they will never stop calling. I learned it the hard way.

Just got a call today no message and I did recently have a hospital stay...I just don't think its right that they can call my cell constantly like that, get a clue if I don't answer after the 5th time...stop calling.
