Gave this person three phone numbers in response to her ad on craigslist about free washer/dryer but she said she had 20 calls or 20 e-mails so she was going to set up a code for everyone so that whoever has the right code would win. Her name on the account aleshiad115@gmail.com is this legit? She says she works for craigslist. Please let me know as now I am nervous.

when u post on Craigslist you have to provide a phone number. if you provide a cell number, an automated service sends a text with a confirmation #, if you provide a landland number, the automated service calls you with the confirmation #. you have to enter this confirmation # before craigslist will post your ad. people getting texts or calls from this number had their number entered by someone posting on craiigslist - if you get a call or text from this number and you were not posting on craigslist, delete/ignore it. it's not a scam or anything to worry about.

  I disagree.  I did NOT post on Craigslist, I responded to a job ad on Craigslist.  No one goes to that much trouble if 1) The CL ad ain't legitimate, AND 2) they ain't up to mischief.  They get no return for their trouble - Who DOESthat?

This is a call that sends an activation code for a Craiglists posting.  When you post to Craiglist, there are settings to have the activation code sent to the phone number listed on the account that is being used to make the posting.

It's the Craig's List verification/activation number.  Posters receive a phone call to the number they provided to Craig's List and receive an activation code to enable their posting.

It's a verification callback for Craigslist. When posting certain types of items for sale, such as automobiles, they require you to establish a Craigslist account which also requires a phone verification. This is done to reduce the number of bogus adds that get posted by scammers.

If you created a business listing on Google, you (or someone who had your phone number) had to give google the phone number to call you.  The activation code is for the "webpage" that you created, so that it will be published.  No code, no publishing...  No big deal.  Maybe someone punched in the wrong number, or folks have short term memory loss!  :)

I do not have anything on craigs list nor have I EVER and I got 2 calls back to back about 5 mins. ago.

I made the same mistake as you, I always check the sites before entering such information, but not this time. I'm worried about what he could do with that information I changed my password for my e-mail. My biggest concern is my phone number, what could he do with it?

I also got this call today after 6:30 pm and wanted a cell phone number to text a 5 digit con code I refuse to provide my cell number since this call was very suspicious because this person said it was from the health board and  my business had a health Inspection 1 week ago and. Had no problems. I would like to know how to report this if you know how please reply

It's an activation code from Craigslist

i got a call showing call ider as unavailable, some guy saz i m tony i m calling from do not call department ( i m already registered on Canadian no call registry) and that in a moment i shall receive a call from a lady (caller id 1-310- 928-7055) who will give a code #  so as per what he asked i hung up and in a minute or so got automated call that saz craiglist and gave a five digit # i noted the number and hung up, after two minutes same guy tony calling from unidentified # by that time i had already smelt something fishy going on, asked that guy never to call at my number or i m going to report to the government and i hung up. By the way i have no posting or account at craiglist and i never gave my home phone to craiglist. yes someone might be using my number. Police and other concerned authorities should take a note of it as we dont know what game they are playing.

My Gmail account was "compromised" and I had to get an activation code to re-establish my connection. I was given the option of having a code sent it text format to my cellphone or to receive a call with a recorded message of the code. I chose the text first, but when I didn't receive it I opted for the call. This number delivered my activation code and I restored my account. I wonder how all of you out there with this problem got your phone numbers tied into this standard activation process... Hmmm. I am certain this helps everyone wondering what the activation code was for, at least. Peace
