That is Craigslist giving you a verification code to post something, if you werent trying to post something, you might want to contact craigslist

I am in Canada. I also got a call today a few minutes ago, which woke me up. With an Indian accent a person who called himself 'John" said he is calling from CRTC and also gave CRTC's 1877 number said he is blocking telemarketing calls to my telephone. Then I got a verification number. Again that 'John' called me back and got the verification number from me. Then he asked me whether any of my friends want their numbers blocked and my cell phone numbers. It sounded fishy and I called this 3189287055 and got a busy sound. I searched and found it is a Californian area code. What the heck a Californian number got to do with canadian CRTC. Certainly someone is using some ruse  to get a passcode for your phone number available on the directory and using it for some fishy purposes. I saw the first post here was in 2008 and what the hell the authorities doing all this time to stop this folks?

What is the benefit for them by using our telephone or cell phone
numbers with some bogus verification codes?
Are they selling the list to someone and making money?
It is certainly illegal to falsely represent someone else like Bell,Craiglist or CRTC.
Better check your long distance bills anyways.

After reading all the posts here I could say that it is a CraigsList veryfying number and they have not bothered to respond or intervene and protect the people from this scam or nuisance for over 3 years.
They cannot simply play innocent and allow this to continue by negelecting all the complaints. They should come to this block and give their contact number or customer service numbers for people affected by their tampered system to complain. People will check that number only after they had been affected and it is no use asking them not to respond for such calls from that number. Hope they or someone can take actions against the perpetrators.

I have got the following calls today-8th May 2010
7.38 pm (ET) call from 052593312  a guy said he is calling from CRTC and gave a true CRTC number
7.40 pm (ET) call from 3109287055 automated message gave a verification number # 70374
7.41 pm (ET) call from 052593312  the same guy called and got the verification number.

He then asked for  my cell phone number and my friend's numbers  to  be blocked for 'marketing calls' which arose my suspision and I did not give.

why i getting call from this number,he already tell me i'm fired from my job.who's the hell he is

Received three phone calls, back to back, from 310-928-7055 offering a verification code. Apparently a co-worker is updating something on Google?

The call is from google, for an activation code to start a blog. I tried to sign up and it said they would call or text me my activation code. But it to start a blog.

I was locked out of my gmail account for 3 days - to be reinstated gmail wanted my cell phone number, which after 3 days, I reluctantly gave them. Immediately this number called me with a code number. The caller's number was: 310-928-7055
I entered the code number in the gmail special sign in area they provided and signed in. They had me do a new password, so I did. Within 5 minutes my router & modem shut down and I went off line. Had to reboot router and modem and the Internet came back on. Someone by the name of Neil Platt had sent an email message from my account to several people with the following link in it:

I did not click on this link nor should you go there - might contain a virus.
I again changed my password. Hope this takes care of the problem but I might just go ahead and cancel my gmail account.

If you get a call and you don't know what it is, then someone probably tried to use
your number when they registered on a specific
site that uses that service.They call you using different numbers &
if you pick up the call they will tell you a code which you have to dial to confirm a registration.
After that they will start sending you spam messages ,
If you click on them they autosend a message to that number and some
amount will be deducted from your account,This is also
an social engg technique to know your personal information.

I don't know why I got this call because I didn't register for anything using my cell phone lately

It's from Craig's List. Did you try posting an ad on their site?  Sometimes they require phone verification, I think to stop illegal spammers. You enter your phone # and then you get an automated call with an activation code to post your ad.

This guy used your phone number to register with Craigslist.  (In order to sell some things, or if you make a lot of changes, they require you to register and validate that you have a legitimate phone number, I would suppose in order to track you better if they find out you are doing the bad.)  He called you back to get the verification number that he has to enter on the computer he is using in order to set up the account.  So now this creep has probably been accepted as a seller.  A nice try for Craigslist to help stop spamming or catch criminals, but when the scammers can easily get someone unknown to give them a verification code.....

310-928-7055 calls me, inessantly-- and will not stop.  I have alerted this caller that tghe person they are looking for is nOT at my (business) number, as they are idiots and cannot pronounce the name correct;ly!

Then, I hang up- and tghey call back, and I hang up;  it's like a game, and I would like to know what good the do-not-call registry is, as it has not prevented or stopped these unwanted, sometimes harassing, calls!
