The reason they ended the survey was because they filled their quota for your branch. The survey would have included questions about the teller you dealt with and customer service experience.

This guy has it mostly right, this is not a scam, it's just a customer satisfaction survey. Annoying? Perhaps. Trying to scam you or steal from you? Absolutely not. Let's clear a few things up:

    1) It is common practice for financial institutions to contract third-party market research call centres to conduct brief surveys with their customers, often following transactions at specific branches. They provide the market research companies with customer databases containing names and phone numbers -- nothing else. When these people call, they do not ask for your account balances or account numbers, nor do they have that information on hand. Most times, they do not even know what types of products and services you have with the bank... just your name and number. The surveys usually consist of asking how your experience was at the branch, how you were treated by the staff, and what they can do to improve. Sometimes, lengthier surveys will ask you whether or not you have specific products or services with the bank (ie mortgages, lines of credit, credit cards) and how satisfied you are with those products and services. It SEEMS invasive, but the person on the other end has no idea who you are and honestly doesn't remember a thing you told them by the time they're done their shift. It's of no interest to them beyond the parameters of their job duties. They often do not even have access to your responses once they have moved on to another call.

    2) More often than not, these call centres use an auto-dialer system to conduct calls... and NO, it does not just call any and every number on the planet starting with 111-111-1111 and moving onward. There is a specific list of numbers that has been programmed into the dialer, and each number is attached to a specific ID number. The person calling you is more likely to have been connected to your number through computer software designed to cycle through the numbers (with a headset), rather than punching in the number manually on a telephone keypad. The auto-dialer is considered the most efficient method, as it has the capability of sorting out numbers that are not in service and numbers that have not been picked up or have gone to voicemail. HOWEVER, the major disadvantage of using one is that it can sometimes take up to 30 seconds for the call to connect, depending on the volume of calls being made at the time and the quality of the software being used. Let me repeat that. ****It can sometimes take up to 30 seconds for the call to connect**** YES, this is annoying and impersonal and interruptive, but I assure you it is NOT a malicious attempt to prank call you. No one is listening to you on the other line going "Hello? Hello? Hello?" and then hanging up on you deliberately. It's just poor software they're using.

    3) Whether or not your number is listed or unlisted is irrelevant -- the number you provided to the bank as your contact number is the number the bank then provides to the market research company to contact you. Furthermore, if someone is calling you on behalf of your bank to ask you customer satisfaction-related questions, it is because YOU HAVE GIVEN THE BANK WRITTEN PERMISSION TO DO SO. Read your contract. I guarantee you there is a section in there stating that you give permission for RBC or whatever your bank is permission to contact you for the purpose of improving customer satisfaction or market research purposes or something of the like.

    4) Furthermore... if someone calls you from one of these numbers asking for someone other than yourself (ie your spouse or someone else in your household), and will not disclose the nature of the call until they speak to that specific person, it is because there are VERY strict legal regulations regarding phone calls related to financial institutions. In your contract, probably on the same page as the aforementioned permissions to contact you for research purposes, the bank has promised YOU that they will not reveal your status as a customer to anyone else... regardless of their relationship to you. It's a contract, and although you are the one signing it, the banks are legally bound to it as much as you are. If someone besides yourself marched into a bank demanding to know whether or not you have an account there, you wouldn't expect the teller or branch manager to answer that question or give that person the time of day... it's no one's business but the person who owns the account. EVEN SPOUSES. People seem to think that because they are married to someone, they have a legal right to know every single detail of that person's life, but that is legally not the case when it comes to financial dealings. Market research firms and banks have many times been sued by customers for revealing the fact that they have accounts or do business with a particular bank, ESPECIALLY to a spouse or family member. That's why this is such a rigid rule and why the person on the other end will most certainly not reveal the nature of the call, no matter how much you yell at them.

    5) Finally, if you go into your local branch and ask the tellers and branch managers about the survey calls and they do not know what you're talking about... most times, they will not know about it, because it is the larger corporate offices who contract the market research companies, not the local neighbourhood branches. It is not their area of operations. However, I find that more staff members of local branches are now aware of these surveys than they were in previous years, and sometimes they will even let you know that you can expect a call within the next few days asking you how your experience was at the branch. But if one person isn't aware when you ask, that doesn't automatically make it fraudulent.

Hope that clears a few things up. If you don't want to be called, all you have to do is answer the call, decline to participate, and ask to be removed from their calling list (and no, it is NOT the same as the National Do-Not-Call list, as that only applies to sales calls... each market research firm will have their own private no-call list). They will oblige.
