Report a phone call from 727-556-7300 and help to identify who and why is calling from this number.
- AFLORIDA area code. I don't answer it.
Once I did and I hung up after a pause (expecting a machine to kick in, but a man said hello). My theory is if it's someone who wants to talk to me they will just call back. No callback: telemarketer.
I looked up MCCS and there is a marine corps retirement community services with that acronym.- Caller: don't know
- Rod A.Caller ID said "MCCS" and male voice asked for a family member by the wrong first name (!) before he realized he was talking to our answering machine! He didn't leave a number, and I didn't call back.
- cashuinNobody is there when I answer. Never leave a message either. They called sunday morning at 8:00 am. and call 3-4 times daily. They start on the dot at 8AM. I thought collections per fair credit act can only call M-Fr 8AM to 9PM? Has the LAW changed??
- Caller: unknown
- PeterKeeps calling me but no one is there when I answer the phone.
- celeneMake them quit calling my cell phone!
- Tired of thisThis number has called 10 times in one day. Now that I know who it is, I'm going to have me some fun. I will pretend to be whom ever they ask for and give all kinds of fake information. That should be my fun for the day.
- Caller: MCCS
- smsI've been getting these calls on my cell at least twice a day for the last week. At first I ignored them, then called back to see who they were. The first person I talked to told me that they are associated with Macy's and Bloomingdale's and apologized when I said I don't have an account with either one. I have called back twice since and both times the person has looked up my phone number, said I have no account with them, and promised I wouldn't get any more calls. If I do answer when they call, they hang up.
I'm quite concerned... I want to make sure no one opened a credit line in my name, and also am wondering if this is a scam... - LLFor the past couple of days I have received twelve calls from 727-556-7300. There is never a message of any kind left. It is an annoyance.
- arthritis39Unidentified caller. rings twice no message gone by the time I get there
- Caller: none
- MatthewBest guess is social engineering fraud, rather than the actual Macy's company. The use of the Macy's 1-800 number is easy enough to fake via Caller ID spoofing (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing for more information). The 727-556-7300 number is likely their actual number, and at least originally it's a Verizon cell phone number (see http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco?npa=727&exchange=566).
The scam, assuming that it's executed correctly, is usually pretty simple. They call a number, and inform the answering party that they are Macy's, and there's an issue with the answering party's credit card. They ask for the answering party's name and card number.
Now, one of three things happens.
1) The answering party figures that this is fraud. If they're smart, they probably hang up at this point. If they're really smart, they ask the person calling them to note their account with the issue, as well as a callback number for their department, and then they go online to find the actual Macy's number. In this case, due to caller ID spoofing, one of the fraud numbers IS the Macy's number, but that shouldn't ever be taken for granted. The answering party can call the company and ensure that no fraud is occurring. The reason that this is the smartest thing is because in some cases, the companies really ARE trying to get in touch with customers to confirm that they really did order new credit cards/cell phones/whatever. By calling the actual company back from the number on their web site, you can ensure that nothing has been set up under your name at the company.
2) The second possibility is that the answering party doesn't realize that the call is fraud, and they do have a Macy's card. In order to "verify their account" the fraudster may require their card number, security code, PIN code, expiry date, SSN, etc. The person provides it, and the fraudster giggles all the way to their retailer of choice.
3) The third possibility is that the answering party doesn't realize that the call is fraud, and they don't have a Macy's card. In which case the fraudster can inform the mark that a card has been set up in their name, and to clear things up they'll need to verify the customer's identity in order to confirm that the customer's identity has been stolen. The customer is asked for their SSN, date of birth, etc, and the fraudster is able to use that to do all sorts of immoral and illegal things.
Generally speaking, there's not a lot to be done. If you can find a sympathetic police officer, you might be able to file a report, and police could potentially subpoena the phone records of the offending number - assuming that the Verizon number used in this case isn't a spoof itself. - MatthewEr, in my above post I meant Verizon landline, not cellphone. It's late, mea culpa.

- H. Randell7 calls in last 3 days to cell phone. The last two were 1 hour apart in the 7pm hour. Have not answered any of the calls, and no messages have been left. Called the # back immediately after last call, and was greated with a message "Thank you for calling the credit union. Please call back during normal business hours" This is probably a 'phishing' operations - for some unknown purpose
