I didn't answer, nor did I call back, but when I googled the phone number, this is the website that came up http://www.capitalone.com/contactus/personal_accounts/credit_cards/index.php

It's the second number under "fraud protection". I haven't even received my Capital One card yet, so I can't imagine why they would want to call me.

Something of note, it's not hard to fake a caller ID number. Some scam artists could easily be using Capital One's fraud department's caller ID to throw off unsuspecting victims. I recommend calling Capital One directly, and asking if there's a note on your account regarding some form of fraud.

I got a call from this number and was asked whether I had received my Capital One card, and to verify the CC numbers. Sounded fishy. Didn't give them anything and looked up the #.

All the numbers they gave me to call I looked up on the reverse white pages and none of them are legit.
They said they were from the customer fraud protection dept.  I pulled my own credit report and found nothing wrong.  I then found this site.  Thanks everyone.

Legit! Capital one fraud department, its on their website. Someone (probally my exwife) tryed to get a capital one card in my name in another city (where my exwife lives). They also applied for about 6 other cards in my name on the same day (my exwifes bday).

This number 1s not part of any legit Financial Institution directory. Check again 800-239-7054.

They called my mom in FL and left a message that someone was trying to open a credit card in her name. They asked her to verify the last 4 of her credit card which she did.
Only when she told me the story did I google the # and as I suspected this is a phishing company.

I received a snail mail letter today 6/19/12, supposedly from Captal One.  The gist of the letter was this:

1.  A claim of trying to get in touch with me by phone.
2.  They were informing me that they had put a temporary hold on my card & account.
3.  They want me to get in touch with them via the tele # 866-540-2504 to make certain no one is using my credit card without my permission.
4.  They need to speak with me immediately to verify my information to remove this hold.
5.  They apologized for the temporary hold and will work with me to resolve the issue quickly and accurately.

The letter ends with:   Sincerely, Fraud Investigatior (no name) and 800-239-7054.
Note:  Neither of the numbers given here are in my caller ID.  So much for them trying to get in touch with me, huh?

I'll be calling the Capital One phone # listed on my actual card to check this out.  I'll let you know if the letter is valid or fraud.  I suspect the letter is a new attempt method of fraud. (If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, etc., we can be reasonably sure the letter is a fraud.)

Alright folks, here's the scoop on Capital One.  If you look on the back of your card, you'll find a 24 hr customer service telephone number.  I called it this evening and was passed on to security.

The letter I received is actually legitimate.  My account was singled out because of a MASS ACCOUNT COMPROMISE involving MasterCard and Visa.  In other words, my account (along with thousands of others) have been commandeered by unscrupulous individuals.  Possibly a retail outlet has been hacked somewhere along the line... that's a guess. Security will verify with you purchases since your last bill and the dates.  They will issue a new card and close your present account immediately (to assure that fraud charges cannot go through.)  You will receive the new card in 5-7 days. As a new safety measure, anytime you call Capital One, you will have to give a secret password.  The attendent will ask you for a password.  Don't be surprised if you get a call or letter from Visa if you have an account with them too. The amount of stolen numbers must be massive.

So, call the number on the back of your card to avoid the possibility of bigger headaches down the road... like, maybe a trip to Aruba on your card that you didn't take.

Although this number appears on Cap One's website, there is something very odd about this. We always hang up when we get phone calls about credit cards. Recently we had our phone taken out. About 10 days later we receive a letter from Cap one (black and white letterhead) that "We've been trying to contact you" because "someone" has "opened" a possibly fraudulent account using some or all of our personal information. blah blah blah
It concludes with "remember to contact us so we can handle this matter"

We have not called any of the numbers.
It just sounds so fake its unreal. WHY WOULD CAP ONE OPEN AN ACCOUNT IF THEY SUSPECTED IT WAS FRAUDULENT??? And, we don't even have an account with cap one so how did they get our address? Would they seriously open an account on our address to someone else? WTF is going on here.

It must be some sort of scam with someone sending out these letters in hope of clogging up cap ones legitimate service, or maybe trying to generate business for selling scam insurance, who knows but it sure smells fishy.

The issue is not whether it is a legitimate number.  The issue is that who is tapping into it and misrepresenting themselves as Capital One Fraud Protection.  I received a letter from them advising me that someone had opened an account fraudently utilizing my information.  By the way I don't have any credit cards at all.  The fact that the letter looked like a photo copy was a red flag right away.  I will not be returning the call to 800-239-7054.  I will call the main number and get transferred. I still feel that someone is tapping into the phone number.

I too got a call today from 800-239-7054 on my cell phone.  I was at work so I did not answer it.  I immediately got another call on my work line from the same number.  Same song and dance as everyone else.  "Someone's trying to open an account in my name.  Address doesn't match. Blah, blah..".  Then they wanted to transfer me to another line where they would ask me some questions.  They said it would take about 20 minutes.  Told them I didn't have time that I was working and made arrangements to have them call me back that evening.  No call so far and I also have Lifelock were I found no suspicious activities under my name.  Don't know if it's a scam or not but definitely on high alert right now.  Beware!

Actually 800 239 7054 it is a legit number, of you received a call from this number you do not need to answer if you don't want or if you feel uncomfortable, just wait for the letter, call to the main customer service dept.  (verified first @capital one website) request for the fraud dept and give the case number. Of you did not apply, someone may did fraudulently and you are victim of identity theft.  if you apply just confirm the info. They will explain what the situation is. You deserve tí keep your info save, but also remember, if you suspect about this calls, also remember that also Mr. President Obama is not going to pay put dues !!!! ...suspect about everything everywhere ... Take care ...

Why you think that ??? ... If you suspect you are victim of identity theft, go and call to the credit bureaus .... when someone calls claiming the possibility of been victim of identity theft they help you  no charge for that ...

Two weeks after my wife hung up on the caller ("Unavailable" on our Caller ID), we received the same letter others have mentioned, signed "Customer Fraud Protection." I called the legit # on the website, and was told that (1) their fraud department is not called "Customer Fraud Protection" and (2) our file shows no problems.

A call then a letter same as all others. Call came in on Sunday? From Canada according to female caller? Not about me but about possible fraud using my mom's info.? Mom has never had a card nor has anyone in the family. Woman had my personal info too wanted to know if someone had power of attorney when I informed her mom has advanced mental problems. Said to e-mail it to her. No way I tell her and hung up.

Letter came 5 days later, it is clearly a copy of a copy , no color in the logo etc.  Same list of contact numbers. If there is a fraud it must be working enough to still be floating around, Will be submitting this letter to the Attorney General here in my State as suspected mail fraud. The link someone inserted in their comment may be a fake web site. Fraud woman offered to give me a website url. hate to sound paranoid but I for one do not trust anyone.

Same thing just happened to us - it's FRAUD and do NOT give your identity information under any circumstance!

I have received two messages regarding fraud and called this number. I checked the number on this site and was aware it could be a scam. They asked for my SSN as a way to verify my identity. I told them that they should have information on file if they were CapOne. The woman on the line did speak English but barely so I was immediately suspicious and I went off on her. She stammered that it wasn't but I hung up. The site link provide to me was also very suspicious.

Asshat, that link proved nothing except the number in question IS NOT ON THE LIST. Go away phisher.
