Capital One's Fraud policies are ridiculous.  Payment was made to my credit card from a client's bank (owed me money for a job I did).  The bank insisted that I have my client call the bank and confirm that it was a legitimate link between him and his bank before they would accept the payment!!!!  They put my account on restriction and will not lift it until they talk to my client.  Great practices don't you think.  I refused to give up that information just to post a payment and asked my client to withdraw the payment.  Even after the payment was withdrawn they still will not take the restriction off.  The account will remain locked and I will pay this off and cancel any business with them.

This is a 100% legit number.  I received a letter yesterday (Jan 4 2016) from Capital one on copy paper.  It looked like junk, but there were a couple things that made me open the letter.  The middle name was one I had changed over 30 years ago and I was surprised to see it since social security has my actual name.  When I opened it, the letter said a credit card had been opened in my name.   I did not call the number in the letter (phishing alert was in my head) , I went to the Capital One website and called the listed fraud number. They answered immediately and I was impressed by their efficiency.    They only asked me for the "case number" that was listed on the letter and AFTER they found the case, only the last four digits of my social.  The said a card had been opened last month using my information and that I was the victim of identity fraud.    They transferred me to another department, asked a few more questions, cancelled the account, told me there was no balance and said they would correct things with the credit agencies.     So, if you get a letter or call from this number,  don't ignore it.  It IS legit.   To feel confident, just go to the website and make sure you call Capital one Fraud dept 1-800-427-9428 (his is the number on their website).   Someone might have a card in your name.

I received to VMs on my cell phone from this number.  They claimed to be Capital One "fraud protection" and they gave me a reference number to provide them when I call back.  So I did.  I asked the lady what exactly was going on (I don't even have my card yet...just applied and got approved).  She couldn't tell me.  Only that I needed to fax them my DL (front and back), SSC (front and back) and proof of address (utility bill).  Smells totally fishy to me.  Screams of identity theft!

Received VM from Capital One Fraud Dept 1 800 239 7054 and asked to call back with giving a 14-digit ID #. I do not own a Capitol One Card so was suspicious from the get go & did not call back. I did however have 2 other visas compromised this past week from my hotel room in Cabo San Lucas. I've been on high alert now & suspect this Capital Card message is bogus.

I requested a credit line increase and this was a legit call as I was given the increase once I answered their questions

Same letter received!! Big time fraud!!! These stupid lazy ass people need to get a job and work, like the rest of the world!!  Don't give them any information.. There is a a special place in hell for people like them!!!

This is a legitimate number.  CapitalOne was calling to confirm that it was actually myself who applied for the card and not someone else trying to get hold of a credit card in my name.

Got a phone call & voicemail from someone claiming to be CapitalOne Customer Fraud Protection saying someone had opened a credit card account using some of my personal info.  Asked me to call this number.  A couple of days later I received a letter looking like it was from CapitalOne, even imitating its letterhead and envelope logo. Same deal: call same number to protect my info.
Clearly phishing.  Letter and envelope were on cheap stock; sent by Presorted First Class Mail, which means it was sent in bulk.

Call Cap One an was informed they are investigating this, because it was fraud.  The return number is correct, but if you answer the caller that person is not with Cap One.  They even checked my account an verified that none of the information provide by the caller was true.  This is still a scam to watch out for.
(3 calls to my cell an 2 to my work number today alone.) Called Cap one again, they gave me the same information as my first call, its a scam an they are investigating.

I got a call from someone calling from an OUT OF AREA number asking for the last 4 digits of my social security card, wanting to veryfy my application for a CAPITAL ONE credit card. I told him that I was approved already. He said that he still has to verify before I can use the card. When I told him I'm not giving anyone any information over the phone, he gave me this number 1800-239-7054. This must be an inside job and CAPITAL ONE should be aware of it! . He has an accent. Another giveaway was that he kept talking on and on, I just hung up.

Legitimate number doesn't make it a legitimate call and that is based on  frivolous operations that use caller id spoofing.

This is a LEGITIMATE number for CapitalOne. Go check their website is you don't believe me.  HOWEVER, the (still) current business practice of asking you for your entire credit card number is very bad.  Don't do it.  Tell them you will only give last four digits.  They have smarter ways of doing verification.  They can send you an email to use a secure link and upload documentation securely to them.  Insist on using that method instead of giving them complete numbers on the phone.  I told the rep I spoke to that their process is bad and gives people the impression of fraud (which is ironic as it's their [anti-] fraud department that has this bad practice).

I am thinking that these guys are collection agencies undercover if you are not paying your bills on time or not paying them they will get you or your families information

I applied for a Capital One Card on my computer and was approved.  The following day I received a call which didn't have a phone number, instead it said "unknown".  I read that if a call comes in with no phone number it could be a scam number so I didn't answer it.  He left a voicemail saying his name is Gary from Capital One Fraud Department and he is calling to verify that I applied for a Capital One Card and there may be fraud associated with it.  He left a 14 digit number (he had to repeat it 2 times as he got it wrong the first time) which he said is my case number and saying I need to call 1-800-239-7054 and that I could check the phone number on www.capitalone.com.  He ended the call saying "Once again, thank you for using Capital One".  It was late at night so I decided to investigate the number the next day.  The following day I get an email from Capital One saying my new card was just shipped and should arrive shortly.  Confusing as to why they would send the card instead of holding it.  I have a credit monitoring service to alert me if there is possible identity theft or fraud and they are not alerting me on this.   I looked at my credit reports and they are good.   I decided to wait until I receive the card.  When I go to activate it, then they will either tell me there is a hold on it because of a fraud problem or they will activate it.  Then I will know.
