what can we do if they were successful??  This was regarding a delinquent account for my deceased ex-husband and I know they will be opening all kinds of things using his information.  HELP!

Well first you should go to the FTC site on identity theft and read and follow those directions.  Contact the FTC, CFPB, and your State Attorney General's office for additional help.

Got a call, allegedly from Capital One. When I asked what they were giving away today, guy hung up.

Y’all are all wrong. This is the number Capital One calls me from to verify my info because I have a 7-year fraud alert on my credit. They are calling to verify that it was ACTUALLY YOU that applied for credit as per FCRA requirements. Capital One has called me from this number twice: when I first applied for my card and when I asked for a limit increase. I got what I asked for both times.

Received a call today from these scammers. I called Capital One right after and verified that THIS IS NOT CAPITAL ONE!

This is a fraud, I only applied and haven't yet received the card so how would I have a fraud for a card that is not issued yet. The lady had the exact words as several others have quoted, they try sounding very professional but this for sure SCAM!

I received the same call this morning. "Shannon" from Capital One's fraud department called my cell (which I didn't answer) and left a message requesting a call back asap. The number on Caller ID was from the 804 area code and different than the 1-800 number she left. I called the first number, and a message came on saying it was an invalid number at Capital One. I called the 1-800-239-7054 number that was left on the message and was connected to Capital One's fraud department. The person immediately asked me for my 16-digit account number, I said I was uncomfortable giving that out given that the call was solicited from me, and the woman said I should call the number on the back of my card and they would route me to the fraud department. I called the number on the back, asked to be transferred to the fraud department, and the very nice man at the fraud department said 1-800-239-7054 is NOT a Capital One number. I filed a report with them, filed an online report with the FBi ...

I just got a call to my cell phone # tonight (didn't recognize the # so didn't answer).  The message from a "Ralph" said that he was calling from Capital One and that it wasn't a Sales Call and for me to call back ASAP at 800-239-7054.  I called the 800# left and was immediately asked for my 16-digit account number.  I told them I just wanted to know why a "Ralph" was calling me and they said they needed my credit card # to pull it up.

Something didn't sound right at all - especially since I NEVER gave my cell phone # to Capital One for my account.  I also worked for a credit card company credit center 15 years ago and I knew that they didn't need my account # to look anything up if I didn't feel comfortable giving it.  After persistence from this girl, I just told her that I would call back.

I immediately called the # on the back of my card and spoke with a very nice man at the REAL Capital One.  He could not find 800-239-7054 at all for one of the Capital One phone #'s.  He said that it was very smart to NOT give out any information.  He also gave me the phone # to Better Business Bureau to report this: 804-648-0016.

Hopefully others will not give into this potential scam!

Yes, "Jay" was probably a shill.  On the other hand, you have been spamming in 2-4 minute intervals using sock-puppet names and that is not too cool either. Looks like your post reporting a call in 2008 was removed since that date is stale. You have some good info up, you should stop spamming and quit a winner.

I rec'd a voicemail from Andrew in the Capital One Fraud dept and he left a message stating someone is trying to open a credit card in my name and left a case#.  I was asked to call back to an incomplete ph# with a specific case number.  Because of the incomplete phone number - I dialed the original number and they wanted me to verify my info and were asking for things like DOB... I refused and hung up.  I have no Capital One accounts for years.

So instead of looking up a known, published phone number you called a number back that could have put you in direct contact with a scammer trying to get your information?

I was called twice once by 800 955-7070 and another time from 800 239-7054 both callers were foreign, claiming their were representing Capital One and could I send them a copy of my social security card and my driver's license.  I terminated both calls as I felt I was being scammed.

I just received a call from them. Super fishy and wouldn't answer my question when I asked why the card was restricted. Wanted a license copy. Maybe the scammers are using a computer app to have it look like they are calling from the correct Capital One Fraud Dept. That would make since.

Any legit company would not ask for all this personal info and for people to click on links to verify who you are. If an account is in good standing there is no reason so I think it's either a fraud and should be ignored or Capital One is promoting online identity theft by confusing the consumer and asking for personal info to be transmitted online for a made up reason
