Fraudsters can spoof phone numbers, so if you receive a call from this number, it may be a scammer calling from a different number. It can't be spoofed the other way, so if YOU call this number it is legit.
I received a letter addressed to my ex-wife with MY address on it. She lives 12 states away and we've been divorced for 6 years. It said thank you for opening a Capital One credit card account. We hope you enjoys the benefits, blah, blah, blah....
If you did not open this account, please call 800-239-7054 immediately.
It had the last four numbers of the card and a 14 digit "case number". Why would there be a case number on a thank you letter?

My only guess is, since my ex-wife's credit is completely trashed and there's no way in he|| she'd ever get approved for any card, Capital One's collection dept. is sending this letter to anyone with the same last name in hopes that they'll find her, she'll call and they can harass her for collections.

Either way, it's a legit number, but only if YOU call it, not if they call you.

I got a letter stating I opened a new account and to call this number if I didn't apply for the account. I called the number on the back of my capital one card, and they have no record of an application for a new credit card.  DONT CALL THIS NUMBER! And the fraud department said that was not their number!

This is a legit fraud number for Capital One.. Verifying your information if you recently applied for a credit line or if you have a current account.. For the people asking how they got different numbers then what you listed on your application, if there is a suspicion of fraud and/or you have a fraud alert notation on your credit report (as I do which is why I received this call) asking that you be contacted when new credit lines/accounts are requested they will call the phone number that is listed on your credit report and that number only.. This is for your protection.. Also, per Capital One's website as well as their corporate office, this number is in fact their fraud department, and they do ask for your personal information.. Do your research people! There's nothing wrong with being really cautious, but spreading nonsense based on unfounded information, and baseless knowledge is just ridiculous.. If you did your research you would have found that the very first listing on Google and Yahoo Search Engine is Capital One's website with the following information on it:

Caller ID only says Toll Free. I called them back anonymously with my own number blocked, their own recording identifies them as "Student Loan Relief Center". I haven't been in any school in decades and have no old unpaid student debt.
They are persistent callers to someone that has no student debt so I'm erring on side of caution that they are a scam.

You're right -- The number itself is legit. HOWEVER the person calling is fraudulent, as reported by all of the comments above. What they do is "clone" the phone number which is a tactic used by frausters to have a different number show up on caller ID. In this case they are appearing to call from a real Capital One number but they are actually not. I dealt with this situation this week. It was indeed a fraudulent situation. I told the agent who called me that I am recording and tracing the call, and she hung up. Shady business. Your comments to debunk the fraudulent claims above aren't helping anyone.

got the same call this morning. called back. got someone in the phillipines.  they asked for my whole social. would not give it. I called cap one cust. service. it IS the right number for their fraud department, but they have US reps here to talk to as well. They did ask for the last 4 of my social and my dob and my mothers' maiden name. gave them my mothers maiden name, and they did tell me that whomever tried to open the account with my name and social didn't have that name. when in doubt, call customer service directly. they also said that they have about 5 different tel. numbers/ levels / of fraud protection.

My husband received a letter from "Capital One" Credit card so called fraud protection.  It looks all nice & official.  The letter asked him to call 1-800-239-7054.  Funny thing, WE DO NOT OWN A CAPITAL ONE CREDIT CARD!  We have not owned a credit card in nearly 20 years.  Another tip off was that they did not list our apartment number on the letter.

I got the same fraud alert letter  with the 800-239-7054 number attached. They asked several odd questions but none too invasive such as full card # or SS#. I called Cap1 directly and they verified that was their number. It had to be Cap1 that I first called because they  activated my card while I was still on the phone. I called Cap1's number on the back of my card and they verified that my card had just been activated. So, however poorly this comes across, they are Cap1. Maybe they are being extra careful with all the fraud out there.

Do you honestly sit around all day, trolling message boards, looking for any excuse to call people childish or to take a moral high ground? Persons engaging in fraud have forfeited their right to be spoken about in civil terms. Being the victim of fraud angers people and you should expect some colorful terms in that case. Understand where they are coming from and keep your opinions of their choice of language to yourself. No one cares what you think. You obviously hold too high of an opinion of yourself thinking people care if you scold them. Last time I checked, we are adults and don't need to be corrected like children. Either participate in the conversation concerning credit card fraud, like an adult, or say nothing. It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I received the same letter all of you received and then the female representative told me that someone attempted to open a credit card over the phone with the CapitolOne. I said no I did not. Then after talking to them they wanted to verify my information and asked me for my Social Security Number. I immediately knew this was fake. There is no Credit card company that will ever ask you Social Security Number over the phone. people BEWARE!!!!!

This number is legit, and is one of the two numbers the CapOne website for reporting to the fraud department. I've never had a credit card from them, nor any other account, but as it turns out someone has opened a fraudulent account in my name. I worked for Capitol One for some time and can only think that the info they used to open this account came from their HR department. Please, if you get a call from this number, don't ignore it. What a way to start the weekend! Ughhh!!!
