Scammers are spoofing the Capital One Fraud Phone number. I received a call from this number and an “agent” wanted to lower my APRs on all my credit cards. I asked which one and he said all of them. I only have one credit card with Capitol One.

After they hung up on my I called the number back and Capitol One Fraud Department answered. After talking to them they asked me to forward a complaint to abuse@capitolone.com.

I received a call from 800-239-7054, but I know 100% they were scammers that had spoofed a legitimate number.  Firstly 800-239-7054 is a legitimate number the the Capital One Fraud department.  You can go to their website to verify https://www.capitalone.com/help-center/contact-us/credit-card-support/.

How do I know it was a scam?  Well firstly they told me they were calling about the high interest rate on my Capital One Visa card - a card I do not possess.  While on the phone with them I googled the number and went to Capital One and saw it was a genuine number for the Fraud department.  Why would the fraud department be calling me to reduce interest rates?

I asked them what they wanted and the guy asked me to confirm my credit card number.  Really???  What idiot would give that out.  I said "You called me, so you should have that information.  He said he had it, but needed me to confirm.  That's when I told him I know it is a scam, he asked about a card I don't have, why would the fraud department be calling me about interest rates, why would he ask for my CC number.  He hung up.

I called the number on the back of my credit card and asked to be put in touch with the fraud department.  They told me that I'm not the first to report this.  They have record of people spoofing genuine numbers.  The lady gave me a website to report suspected fraud https://www.capitalone.com/digital/scam-education/

After receiving, but not answering a call from this number (which was identified as Capitol One) I did call Capitol One's Credit Card Customer service number. And it was a pain to actually get to an Agent. And I asked the Credit Card Agent to transfer me to their Fraud Department. The number 800-239-7054 is Their Legitimate Fraud Department Number. It truly is, no matter what else is said in this dialog.
Since I am a software engineer experienced in network communications and security, the Capitol One fraud department agent agreed with me that phishing has become sophisticated to where hacker criminals can temporarily hijack a legitimate phone number for their fraud usage.  The fraud department agent looked up my number and said that Capitol One had no record of my phone number belonging to a customer of theirs.

Today, I received a call from this number and they wanted to offer me a better interest rate.  The interesting things is, they called my business number, not the contact number listed for my account.  I told them they are fraudsters and their scam will not work so go to fly a kite!

Just received a call from “Capital One”. The number is 800-239-7054.  I immediately called the Capital One number ON THE BACK OF MY CREDIT CARD. Ask to speak to an agent in the US that you can understand.  I did report the number and in fact, it is not a Cap One number.

Callers can Spoof Call You showing an Legit Number and Yet If it was Legit why does the Caller ID Show "UNKNOWN"? There is many things today Scammers can Use. Also Why would they Call If you do not have any Account with "Capital One" These are reasons why some take ID Theft Personal Once They have your Info They will either Use it Or Sell It. As Many Should Know They would have Your SSN, DOB and Mailing Address If you Do Have an Account or If You Are Applying Otherwise why Take The CHANCE??? Once you have had ID Theft when others have Applied for Credit Cards You will be Concerned. Some Financial Institutions Are Clueless as To Fraud or ID Theft, They send you a Letter with not Contact Details and when you reply Telling them You have Not Applied They send another and another Letter asking for your INFO! Some do not have any "Fraud Department" And Their Automated System wants Your Account Number or Personal Details before you can get Past their Automated Answering System Why would You Give that EVEN Searching on the Internet for Their Fraud Department Comes Up Empty with Not Contact Unless You have An Account Then You Could get It Stopped But Most Do Not Have a Direct Number to Contact them about a Fraudulent Application. So You are Stuck! Error on the side of Caution and Never Give Out Any INFO!!!

My account has been closed for a few years now, and I also changed phone numbers that Capital One does not have. Pretty sure all they said was "hello" before they hung up. This was after I said hello a couple times.

This is not a legit Cap One call. This came up on my caller ID as Capital One, but this is another company, Card Services, trying to get your information. They called claiming to be a clearing house for all credit cards that would lower my interest rates to 6% for all cards. They then asked for my balance. When I said I only deal directly with my credit card servicers, they hung up on me.

They claim capital one and didn’t leave a message or anything, seems like a spam because banks rarely call and I had similar call with chase number spoofed by scammers.

It doesn't matter whether or not the number is a fraud department, because spoofers can enter that number and scam you.

They’re spoofing the number +1 (800) 239-7054 somehow with an app. They called me yesterday and ask for a women which wasn’t my name. They also called today in the morning. I called the general customer service number of capital one bank. They said that the number +1 (800) 239-7054. Which made me more concerned. That’s how I know someone is using a app to make it seem like it’s capital one but it’s not. When they called my iPhone it said capital one for the name but unknown at the bottom. Which was a read flag. I ask the capital one representative if there was another fraud department number and she gave me 800-955-7070. These scammers are getting more savvy and sophisticated. It’s very rare a bank would call you if you haven’t called them first and requested a call back to your number. The best way to make sure your bank accounts are safe is to go directly to a bank. Please beware of spoofs like this one because this one was very sophisticated! If you didn’t know any better you would totally get scammed!
