My husband had a debt over a 13 thousand dollar piece of equipment. We had a guy making payments on it cause he was interested in buying it. There is no paper work written up, and the guy has only made 3 payments on it. We tried to hunt the guy down, to get the equipment back, but he traded it to a 3rd party. The state troopers told us to get in contact with our lawyer. We did so. Then a couple days later we get a call from Jeff Freu who is pretending to be a personal investigator through Stevens Michaels Law firm. Turns out, it's a collection agency. (What the heck ever happened to honesty?) We told him what happened and gave him the guys number. He calls us back after hes done talking to the guy, supposedly the dude told him he gave us 10 grand, in cash. Hello, if he did that I can assure you we wouldn't be where we are right now. Idiot. So Mr. Freu tells us he's going to sue us for double the amount of the equipment, because he says we're lying. Obviously we aren't. We're taking the guy who gave our equipment to a third party, to court.  It's to my understanding that the guy who took our equipment committed fraud and he can face prison time. Call me a b*tch, but  I'm hoping this is true.

These people have called my home several times in Alaska, for my daughter in Europe (she has been there for over 5 years). I laugh every time they call here and they get a little irritated when I say she's indisposed and will get back to them in a year or so. They won't let me in on the nature of the call, and bristled when I asked if they were attorneys. I know they are a collection agency, they are doing a worthless job of collecting from some agency that reported ? my daughter, but in all truth, my daughter tells me the info is erroneous and they paid off all debts long ago. I feel helpless and want to help my little girl but at same time I want to get to the bottom of this. They seem to engage in "scare" tactics to get info/$$... If it were me, I'd tell them to send info and then send junk mail back to them.

Ok here is the best legal way to handle this. Install a recorder program on your phone if
It's a cell. If it's a landline find a tape recorder. Register with the federal do not call
List. When they call pick up hit record and state the following :"incoming call from phone
Number ( state the entire incoming number) being received on recorded line of federally registered do not call
Number (state your number) at (time) on this day of (state date with year). Please be advised all
Calls are recorded, continuing is consent for federal evidence. How may I help you?"
***note**** if they rattle on advise them AGAIN that it is a recorded federally
Registered number on the do not call list. Save the recording and tell them do
Not call. DOCUMENT and save all recordings. Afterwards contact the federal
Registry will all documents. Each state is different on the amount of pay YOU
Get for these calls. It ranges from $50-150 per annoyance call. The goverenment
LOVES THIS KIND OF EVIDENCE. On top of it the company has to pay crazy money,
They get shut down, and the cake? Charged with 1-3 counts of wire fraud-
A federal offense. Do this and one day we will all have private phones again.
    Thank you <3

One last thing. Dont egg them on. Give them enough rope to hang
Themselves by harassing you- just reiterate the number is federally registered
On the do not call list. Remember. Be nice, let them be the bad guys-
It's being recorded.. The more they verbally assault you or get rude? That's an
Entirely different federal offense- :) more money in your pocket.

    please review the following laws-

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Debt_Collection_Practices_Act

we understand that there are debt collectors that need jobs just like everyone else- if you are one of the good guys please work for a direct agency to protect yourself- after you review the above mentioned laws be advised that 3rd party collectors are shady- if using the telephone for debt collection. After you read the link above please remind yourself that any deviation from the law is breaking the law- and.. if your line can be traced directly you are not going to be covered by the agency you work for if litigated. They are going to have you (or another agent) on tape- ignorance of the law is not validation to not follow it. Please allow yourself the time to educate on some of the practices that are illegal in debt collector land.. I hope you are sincere and just trying to work a decent job- If so.. find some agency that follows the law and work for them  :)

They called today (4/29/11) asking to speak with my husband who has been deceased for 7 years. When I asked what the call was about, they said it "was personal". When I asked the woman how a call to a person who has been dead for 7 years coul;d possibly be personal, she stated that she "wasn't in the mood to tlk to me" and promptly hung up.

    Frustrated
"Brandy" from Stevens & Michaels called my parents' home yesterday afternoon stating that it was imperative that she speak with me immediately. When my mother asked to take a message, "Brandy" told her that her and I have been working on a business agreement and a check that I gave her was returned by the bank.

1 - I've been married for 5 years and have not been in my parents' household.

2 - I've never heard of Stevens & Michaels before nor have I ever bounced a check in my life.

3 - How can they get away with outright lying to people?
