When you registered with TPS did you read what they do and do not cover?  Had you done so, you would have seen that they DO NOT cover Market Research calls.  Being ex-directory only means your telephone number does not appear in a telephone directory.  Have you opted out of that part of the Electoral Roll which can be sold on?  Have you ticked the "opt out" box when buying things on the internet?  If you want to stop calls from legitimate Market Research companies, of which GKN/NOP is one, then it is easy.  Go to their website and use the "Contact Us" facility.  Ask them to remove your details from their data bases.  Job Done.

I have asked about this business of phone numbers and Electoral Registers before without success.      According to the Electoral Commission no one should be asked to provide their phone number at the point of registration.     So which Local Authorities take the opportunity to collect unauthorised information by the method, please?

but 192.com (amongst others) syphons data from multiple sources, eg Electoral Register, BTs Directory Enquiries, etc then sells lists to anyone that is prepared to pay.

I see someone ese has replied to your post.  I would just add that, although, of course, you do not give your telephone number on the Electoral Roll, your name and address are enough for the people making cold calls to find your telephone number.  It is just one more opportunity to get our information.

I used to work for this company 2007-2012 mostly students working there. It is a genuine market research company in a large office. Sometimes the company we were calling on behalf of would forbid us from telling the person we called any details until after the survey making it frustratingly difficult for people to trust us. For some surveys the company we're calling for gave us the number & sometimes its random digit dialling by the computer. You should never be asked anything confidential. And if you are uncomfortable with any of the questions DECLINE that particular question and ask them to move onto the next question, it should be fine. If any member of staff did anything unethical they used to get sacked on the spot or thoroughly investigated immediately.

"Doing research on behalf of M&S bank" the caller said. All I can say is they call regularly whilst allegedly undertaking research for a whole host of companies. I must have had 5 calls or more in as many weeks.

I was also called by them, but as one of my friends used to work in market research, I checked the GFK website and it is one of their genuine numbers.
    See http://www.gfk.com/fileadmin/user_upload/coun ... anuary_2018.pdf.
At some stage we all must have ticked some box or left some box unticked, which means our bank or other service provider can ask GFK to call us for market research.
It must very frustrating for the people working for GFK to be treated like someone from those very irritating cold callers.
