Having read all the cooments (35 pages of them!) I was worried that I'd made a huge error in judgement by completing a sale from this number. It all seemed legitimate as they knew all of the account details etc and also the account usage (which is NOT publicly available and NOT 3rd party accessible).
However, I still made enquiries via O2 HQ in Slough using the details I was given during the call. Both new account numbers showed up on the O2 system. Both were being processed. O2 customer services checked out my story and informed me of LBM involvement.
I have since had 3 emails which I have posted as well (details blanked of course!).
Plese do NOT panic if this number calls you. They are a pain in the [***] company who have had many complaints against them in the past BUT they are a legitimate 3rd party seller for O2.

I hope that this clears things up for people.
    Here's the emails:

I work for O2 and this number is genuine as its O2 ringing all its mobile phone customers to offer better service on their mobile phone or O2 Broadband and home phone.
Think about it the number 02202 is O2 contacting O2 customers.  The reason why you cannot call the number back is because the call centre is an outbound number only not inbound thats why you can't call back on it and the message says that you have been contacted by O2.
We have a record of all of our customers so thats how we have your number because your on the O2 network.
Once more this number is genuine and not a scam.  Its just O2 contacting all its mobile phone customers offering them a better deal and service.

I've just started receiving calls from this 02202 number and they're just annoying sales calls from a branch of O2.  I called O2 and requested that this number no longer call me - the helpful lady I spoke to said she would let the department know.

Fingers crossed for no more calls!

    Panic Over!

I got a phone call from this number a couple of weeks ago.  I was having a bad day and they said they could get me a much better deal on my phone bill so I went for it. I know I should never give personal details over the phone but they hooked me!! I couldn't believe myself that I actually gave all my bank details away so easily!!!!As soon as the phone call ended I started to panic that it had all been a scam and came on this website-it didn't help!!I phoned my husband in tears telling him that we had to close down all of our accounts immediately! He told me to calm down and phone 02.  I did and they confirmed it was their sales department.  I phoned again to check they heard the right number and the guy I spoke to the second time did a search and told me that the number wasn't theirs!!I  phoned a third time and was put through to the new contracts department who confirmed I had just placed an order with 02 for the simplicity package.  A week later my new sim card arrived, no dodgy money taken from my account and about £20 saving a month!:)
I would recommend to anyone who reads this to answer the call and listen to what they say-then go online or to a store to take out the deal-I was lucky-NEVER GIVE BANK DETAILS OVER THE PHONE!!!

Did u seriously mean to write that???
You have just reassured every1 that it is o2 calling although have told them to answer he phone, listen to the deal n purchase it elsewhere!! I mean, you took the deal out over the phone & you found it to be 100% legit so why shouldnt anyone else take it out over the phone!
I don't mean to sound cheeky but as someone who works for o2 gets really annoyed at people like you, we have targets to meet each day, our job is a lot easier when you take the deal over the phone rather than us contact you to give you all the info for you to order it online!!! HELLO!! We brought it to your attention!! Not to mention we work on commission as well!
You gave your bank details over the phone & as YOU say no dodgy money was taken & it is saving you £20 per month!! Why shouldnt anyone else do the same?!

They have called me as well. They asked me whether I am in the UK recently (I travel quite a lot abroad, but where from they know? Perhaps from O2 Roaming?) and then was silent. The voice was something like with an Indian accent, hard to understand.

seems like mixed reviews... i had a call from them not long ago and was prepared to accept this 'free service review' until they asked me for my postcode.

am on pay as you go and dont have this phone linked to my postcode in any way as i brought this phone from a friend a year ago.

I advise am not prepared to give my details when they are the ones calling me, the advisor on the phone said he cant continue as it goes against data protection and pleasantly he hung up... not had a call since.

    hope this is helpful ...

ive only had one call from this number so far and it was about half an hour ago and did a bit of research because it seamed odd... i found this page and was a little concerned - i then phoned o2 and i was told that despite what you read on this page "company stealing bank details" it is in fact an o2 number, which is what i thought as i used it to change tarrif on my iphone. also it is supposed to be an o2 representative trying to explain changes in their tarrifs. o2 also told me that they knew nothing about these suposed calls where people get hung up on (though that is likely to be a standerd response when confronted). hope this helped.

I rang 02 today and was told its defo not to do with them, they would not of asked for my card details or personal info.  So i told them it seems a bit odd that its only 02 numbers they are calling. I told the lady i think 02 have given these numbers out, because i dont give my number out to anyone only family and friends. I told her i was not happy with this at all and i was going to take this matter futher.
I was told to hold the line and then when the lady came back on she had changed her mind and told me it was 02. So i asked if i could have a letter or and email saying this and was told no.

I think 02 have made a big mistake and give out all our numbers and now they are trying to cover it up, well i tell you now i will not be just leaving at that.

hi, i have had 2 calls this week from this number: 02202 and both callers claimed to be from 02. The first call was on the 19/05/2010 and the man said his name was Mickeal and had a bit of an asian accent which i thought was strange, but anyway he seemed genuine enought asking me how my day was! lol then the phone cut off. so i didn't think anything of it.
Then today 21/05/2010 i got the second call and this time the person sounded welch but did not give his name, he just said he was from 02. The funny thing was he knew my name!! He was saying how 02 have some great new deals and was trying to offer me a sim card where i can get free calls to 02 mobiles, plus 300 free mins to any other network.
Then when i tried to say i'm happy with my phone how it is, he kept being persistant to get me to join up with one of these deals! He also said he had to make one more deal so he could go home! This made me think 02 would't talk like that to a customer, also when my boyfriend got back in the car an i told him it was 02 he said they dont call you on your phone, they only txt so then i just hung up the phone!! {After reading most of the comments on here i also believe it's a scam}.

I received a call from this number to my mobile on 21/5/2010 and spoke to an English sounding male for over a minute. The discussion was about O2 user options during which he asked me to confirm my name, first line of address and postcode as well as my date of birth.
There was also a call from the same number yesterday, 22/5/2010, but it stopped ringing before I could answer.

Is it possible to confirm whether these calls are genuine or a scam? Having read some of the previous entries, there appears to be a conflict of opinions about this.

Got a call this morning regarding upgrading from my iPhone tariff. Spoke to Matthew from Manchester! Nice sounding guy had a good chat about weather etc he knew my first name but asked me to confirm second name, first line of my address and the month I was born.

He told he to call 202 to upgrade. 202 is a genuine number and told me that I was not due to upgrade and that no outgoing calls had been made from o2 that day. When I got iff the phone I tried phoning 02202 back and the number was not recognised. Phone 202 and spoke to someone who has filled in a form for the matter to be investigated.

The number is not o2 and i wouldn't bother answering it.

You say that only pay and go numbers are phoned but I'm on a contract and I've had nearly a dozen phone calls from the elusive 02202 number and no ones there then they hang up and I'm getting rather hacked off and if it keeps happening I'm not going to renew my contract this year as all I've had from 02 is problems and network failures

Seccy replies to O2 CALL CENTRE WORKER!!
Personally I couldn't give a monkeys if they are O2 or not.... I would NEVER give my bank details over the telephone to anyone who is calling me. Regardless of how "good" the deal is.

If you do give your personal info out over the phone to someone who has called you uninvited then you are a muppet!!!
