Just had a call from foreign sounding man. Said I was owed bank charge refunds - asked for my DoB and I gave him a stupid date. He then sounded shirty and said did I know that I was being charged £20 a minute for this call - I hung up. Not sure if possible but have heard of scams where you get charged for some form of premium number call even though you didn't initiate the call.

He was just trying to scare you because you didn't fall for his scam.  This is a fairly new scam. They say they are from OFT, Ministry of Justice or anything they think sounds official. They say they have a refund of, say, council tax or bank charges.  They say there are two ways in which they can pay you.  You can give them your bank details and go to get a Ukash or Western Union Voucher for taxes or admin. They say they will ring you back and if you give them the voucher number they will pay the cheque into your bank.   If you are not happy with that they offer to deliver the cheque to your home and exchange it for the voucher.  Whichever option you choose the voucher will be cashed immediately and the cheque, when banked, will bounce like a rubber ball!.

This person called twice: First call was on 25th January 2012 at 13.24 and again at 11.37 on 26th January 2012 and asked for me by name.  A friend was in the house at the time and he then kept asking who she was and said she was sexy.  My friend then put the phone down.

Just had a phone call from this number, claiming to be UK Department of Finance, connected to the MoD. They were claiming that I had overpaid charges of over £500, and could only give the absolute amount and where the charges were originally coming from if I gave them my details. They had my name, my ex husbands name, address and phone number, however wanted me to confirm my date of birth which I would not give them. They said that I had to confirm to them that I didnt want this money paid back as I would not disclose my details. I asked for confirmation in writing to which I would then respond to, but they said that they were contacting over 200 people every day and it would be impossible to write to everyone. It was a man with a very strong indian accent, and did get quite arsey with me when I would not give my details and questioned him. It would be quite believable for anyone that was experiencing money troubles or willing to take the risk to give out details for money, especially as he originally said they he did not need bank details.

Right, lets take this a step at a time.  U.K Department of Finance?  There is no such thing.  Ministry of Defence? What could you have possibly overpaid to them?  This relatively new scam really does like to use official sounding names.  Unfortunately, they tend to go over the top and prove that they are not familiar with authorities in the UK.  If you had given them your d.o.b the next step would be to ask you to a) give them your bank details to pay the cheque in, but they would require a Ukash or Western Union voucher for "taxes" or some such rubbish. When you gave them the voucher number they would pay in the cheque.  The alternative would be for them to send a courier with the cheque and you could give him the voucher.  In either case, the voucher would be cashed within minutes of giving them the number and the cheque, if it ever arrived, would bounce like a rubber ball. Even if our Government was to suddenly go mad and start sending us cheques, they would have 3 miles of paperwork (in triplicate) to be filled in first.

simnilar to all the rest, I've just had a call where he called me the name of my step father who has been dead for 6 years. I told him to pay the overpaid bank charges back to the bank account he had. That seemd to confuse him cos he then wanted my date of birth, telling me my address. This phone number has been TPS for years, they are obviously buying some personal data from somewhere.  Glad I answered and not any elderly person who would give him what he wanted. I'm going to report them to Trading Standards, see if it does any good.

Had a phone call from this number today: heavy indian accent, asked whether I would like a refund to my debit card or cheque. The conversation went like this:
    (me) Hello
(him)...... Hello? Hmm, can I speak to mr...... mr...... mr (my surname)?
    - Speaking
    - I'm calling from Financial Services Company, and would like to arrange for your refund. How would you like to receive it: cheque or to your bank account?
    - Bank account please.
    - Can I have your debit card details?
    - No. I don't give my credit card details to strangers.
    - But this is a refund!
    - What's the refund for?
    - Account fee overcharges.
    - What account?
    - Bank account.
    - Which bank?
    - Your bank
    - How much is it?
    - 6 euros
    - I'll have a cheque then.
    - Can I have your date of birth?
    - Why?
    - I need a date of birth to issue a cheque.
    - Why? You don't need a date of birth to issue a cheque
    - I'm just following a procedure.
    - Well, my procedure doesn't allow giving date of birth to strangers
    - We need to refund this money ASAP
    -Good bye! >click<

    Scam Calls

The remit of the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) lies strictly within the boundaries of live unsolicited direct marketing calls. Scam calls or calls of a fraudulent nature are outside the remit of TPS.

Registration with TPS does not stop scam calls and the TPS complaints team does not have authority to investigate scam calls i.e calls claiming that a computer has a virus and offering remote technical support. Please report such calls to your local Trading Standards Office and/or the police.

I had a call this morning same scam claiming repayment of bank charges. They even had my credit card number. I refused them information and said I would do a check on them, they hung up. Did 1471 got the number reported it to police, trading standards and consumer direct and warned my contacts.
It left a nasty taste in my mouth and I felt sick and wobbly afterwards.  I am 68 yrs of age and thankfully not senile. I suppose greed could be the letdown of some people.
There will always be some ba...... who will not work for their money.  It needs stopping!
