Don't blame those on the end of the phone their just trying to earn a living same as everyone else. EMCAS is a legitimate company and one of the largest in the UK. The reason your getting the calls is because YOU filed out/answered a survey that clearly indicates you will get calls. My advice is to kindly ask the agent to get the details of the company that holds your number, they'll pop you on hold for 2mins and come back with the name of the company, the date you completed the survey and the number to call to get your details removed.

For those on the TPS I'll make aware that these calls are far from illegal, the surveys clearly state that if you complete it then you grant permission for these details to overide the TPS system.

If you honestly didn't complete a survey then someone in the household has done so in your name!

Emcas phoned me and said i could claim for mis-sold ppi on my credit card, but they need the 16 digit ref number from the front of my card so that they can print the papers that are needed.Surely this isn't safe to give this number out to a stranger. The bloke at the end of the phone said that this number is only a reference and nothing illegal can be done without the security code on the back so therefore its safe

I never give my number when filling out or answering surveys, if a marketing survey demands either my telephone number or email address I leave it blank,if that means that I cannot complete the survey, too bad. I know only too well that doing so will result in unwanted sales calls. So how do you explain your company ringing my TPS registered number? I'm certain that no-one else has given the number out either!

Cold callers use phone books, electoral rolls and, of course buy our details from all sorts of people.  There is a vast black market in personal information.  If you ever get a pre recorded call and press 9 to have your number removed you have told that company that they have a name, address and "live" telephone number which they can sell.  Hundreds of people have complained that after using a comparison website, they have been bombarded with all sorts of calls.  It was found last year that employees in Indian call centres used by UK companies had been selling personal information.  That is just a few of the many ways they get our info.

Exactly! My number has found its way onto several lists used by cold callers. Not much I can do about this except refuse to have anything to do with cold callers, I won't even answer the phone if I don't recognize the number displayed.
There are a number of posts in this thread, clearly from ECMAS themselves claiming they are misunderstood and are good guys really. All I can say is that I'm very clear about this, when I do business with a company I implicitly give that company permission to call me, I'm happy with this. What I never do is allow them to pass my details on to "trusted third parties", this is, in effect a carte blanche for your details to be sold on to and used by anybody!
