True Energy debt collection service. I had a missed call and found this page before they called again, so I asked them and they said they are a collection company based in Melbourne working for different companies in this case for TRU Energy. Didn't give them any details and called TRU Energy later, they confirmed that it is a collection service working for them.

Its a collections company pretending they are a Utility company. They are calling you about an unpaid account which has been passed on to them (i.e they have either bought the debt from AGL or TRU etc, or are acting on a commission basis for the Utility company's own collections department).

They pretend to actually be the Utility company so that you hand over personal information, which you wouldn't do if you knew they were a collection company... particularly when the person you are talking to is in another country, one which does not have the same privacy laws as ours. They'll even say "Hi, it's Derek calling" with an Indian accent, if the connection actually works properly...

The reason the call often drops out when you answer is that they use an autodialler which struggles to cope with calls from overseas that are routed, via the internet (as it is cheap) to a local number (which is the 03 number you see) then to you. They do this to make you think its a local person calling you. ie Derek from Melbourne.. when its really Javindah from Bangalore.

Essentially the machine calls you, you answer, and then the machine connects you to an available agent (person) in the call center (telephony sweat shop).

The 'local' 03 number is clearly not set up to route calls back to the overseas origin, hence the busy or unavailable tone when you dial it.

If no agent is available, the line drops out and calls the next person on the list and so on. Its a statistics game. The more calls, the higher chance of a hit.

If your voicemail picks up the call, they often won't leave a message because it means they may miss out on a call with a real debtor waiting in the call queue, and if they do they will leave you a 1300 number to call so you don't know where the company is located.

I suggest you call the number on your energy bill and deal direct with the Utility company only.. and let these unethical agency [***], who outsource their contracts to call centres in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India etc rot in hell.

Remember these people are on commission.

No results for them = no business = no calls = no commission = no lies.

I have been getting calls from this number for months, they never pick up when you return them, but a couple fot time when I have answered they say they are AGL, but always let slip they are a debt collection company. I have no AGL debt and when I call AGL directly they don't know of these calls, They are very annoying

I just got a call from the same number. Missed it so I called back but kept getting a busy tone. Then they call me back and there is no one there. Very strange!

looks like steve's explanation that this number is a auto dialer makes the most sense. it's some off shore call centre that will auto dial numbers off a list on behalf of whichever company has hired them. am disputing a billing issue with AGL who did have a collection agency call from blocked number last week before realising there was an arrangement. the caller sounded like he didn't have the file in front of him before the call connected which means it got routed to him.
Avoid AGL - google "AGL billing issues" or check complaints on your state's energy Ombudsman website.

with all these complaints you would think telstra or the phone ombudsman would of disconnected them by now?

I got the call again (03 8416 1400) and this time I managed to answer it. After a few seconds it flicked over to a human (someone at a Call Centre in the subcontintent) representing True Energy.

After I refused to give them any information to identifty who I was for their so-called 'security purposes'(they called me for Pete's sake not the other way around...why should I assist in identiftying myself) the call was terminated.

The caller had an Indian accent, or from somewhere around that area of the world. They thanked me for paying my AGL accounts and asked for an address confirmation!!??Stupidly I gave it to him.Thinking about it seconds after the call, he sounded excited and or satisfied when I gave him my address. It is fascinating that nearly all the responses to this number on this site are quite different!!??I am having it investigated.
