I keep getting these calls too!!!!!!!! WTF. Maybe its an alien undercover secret agency from another dimension that would like to talk to us...or it could be Morpheus!

Missed call from this number today. No message left

Just got another call...said they were from AGL. Asked for confirmation of address, i confirmed to lead them on. I think it could be some sort of collection agency that can get their hands on outstanding accounts or account history, and try to get you to pay it there and then by paying it into their private account. American Accent....Figures!

the number belongs to AGL, but it is someone from another country calling you. there is the delay in them speaking to u! They call to confirm yr address and straight out ask you to give them a credit card number over the phone to pay the bill.........very dodgy.I am reporting it to the electricity onbudsmen today@!

same here four times tonight no answer when called back, rang service provider to trace call and they advised me to cal police which I have and are following there instructions

Had two messages from this number. They reported they were from AGL regarding my 'energy bill', and gave me a 1300 870 375 number to call back which does not match umber on ActewAGL website. They also didn't use my name at all.

Voice message transcription:
Hi this Ryan calling from AGL. This an important business matter regarding your AGL account. Please return this call on 1300 870 375, quoting AGL reference number B48391

Calling 1300 870 375 resulted in a message that business hours are 10:30am to some PM. The ActewAGL website clearly states they're open 8am - 6pm. http://www.actewagl.com.au/contact/


I believe this is an overseas bounce phone number. No calls from this number should be trusted.

I have received calls from this number - they never answer when I call back and they never leave a number. They need to be stopped.

I too was getting these calls. I contacted AGL who handle both my gas and electricity, and was told my accounts were still in credit from an overpayment. I asked who they use for debt collection and the person was silly enough to provide the name - NCML - I googled them, got their number, and now I keep calling them. Great fun - give it a try :)

Reposting what someone else put but with a few changes...

Its a collections company on behalf of MANY mainstream utility/phone companies.

They are calling you about an unpaid account which has been passed on to them (i.e they have either bought the debt from AGL or TRU or 3 etc, or are acting on a commission basis for the Utility company's own collections department- so in other words, your account just might be a few weeks overdue..)

They act on behalf on the company you owe - they call "from" them,..

They have to identify you - they only have limitied info on you as provided by the company - it comes across as a little intimidating but they need to id you for security of course.

The reason the call often drops out when you answer is that they use an autodialler which struggles to cope with calls from overseas that are routed, via the internet (as it is cheap) to a local number (which is the 03 number you see) then to you. They do this to make you think its a local person calling you. ie Derek from Melbourne.. when its really Javindah from Bangalore.

Essentially the machine calls you, you answer, and then the machine connects you to an available agent (person) in the call center (telephony sweat shop).

The 'local' 03 number is clearly not set up to route calls back to the overseas origin, hence the ringout, busy or unavailable tone when you dial it.

If no agent is available, the line drops out and calls the next person on the list and so on. Its a statistics game. The more calls, the higher chance of a hit.

If your voicemail picks up the call, they often won't leave a message because it means they may miss out on a call with a real debtor waiting in the call queue, and if they do they will leave you a 1300 number to call so you don't know where the company is located.

I suggest you call the number on your energy bill and deal direct with the Utility company only..

It won't be hard to work out who you haven't paid...

And it may in fact be that you have already paid the bill- and these guys are using old data/od records- eg you paid it last week..

Remember these people are on commission.

No results for them = no business = no calls = no commission = no lies.

Have received numerous calls from this number over the past 12 months. I never answer it as I do not answer calls from STD numbers that I do not recognise. They never leave a voicemail message so I do not try to call back.

Received a call today at 21/07/10 at 13:40 (1:40pm) - they did not leave a message on my voice mail.  I rang back and it rang about 6 times then just went dead. I tried twice and got the exact same outcome.

this caller is very wierd,, stay away...

Same as everyone else, got a call from these guys today - tried to call back with no luck - believe it to be a scam. Reason: Have only company mobile, no home phone, company internet, no gas bill in my name and no electricity bill in my name - so they can't be calling me for an overdue account as I don't have any accounts to be overdue. Best we can do is report them.

If they are transmitting through an Austalian registered phone number they are bound by AUSTRALIAN law.

Word to the wise, the fact that they are calling you means that they have to truthfully identify themselves including aspects such as an ABN if they wish to retrieve your details. This rubbish about a 100 point check before they can speak to you is BS. You are well within your rights to request them to identify themselve TRUTHFULLY before you give ANY of your information in return. That means they should give you a name and verifiable contact and company details before you hand over any personal info. It is the same as someone who comes door knocking - they must provide identification.

I've had this number ring me today, I tried to call back twice but it stopped? My daughter got the same! someone trying to scam us?????

This is how they 'scout' businesses for advertising scams. Someone pertaining to be from some directory assistance, white pages, yellow pages etc calls you to confirm your details are correct and then half an hour later (or the next day etc) someone from some charity rings you saying they have your artwork ready to be approved and the person in charge (who you told the directory person) apparently approved it a couple of months ago. It's all a scam. They never ask for personal info other than the person who is in charge of business or advertsising/marketing etc. Then they ring up someone else from the same business and tell them this person approved it months ago! They also try and convince you that you yourself approved it months ago, that they have it written in their diary, that you must have just forgotten. Then they send you a bill and expect you to pay for it. So that is what this is, there's heaps of them around from silent number ones, to numbers like the above. The whole scam has been around for a year or so now. I just received one today from this number. When I rang it, it rang a couple of times and then hung up.

This number rings me 3times a week, they never speak and hang up after a few seconds, wish they would bugger off!!
