- TonyI have had a phone call from this number claiming to be from the Department Of Work and Pensions checking if my benefits claim is legitimate.
I called the number back and got a recorded message saying thank you for calling and somebody will call be back.
The number I was given by Smitha? the adviser was (0845)601 9902 which is Age UK Insurance Services. Then when I did 1471 on my landline I got the number (0800) 0232 635. When I then dialled this number I got a recorded message from the Department Of Work Pensions saying they would call me back - TonyI have contacted Jobcentreplus and they have confirmed that a benefit check call has been made regarding my claim today.
- Tony replies to Madeleine HumphreyHi Madeleine, I have also received a call. I would suggest you contact the national Jobcentreplus number and press option 7 to speak to someone regarding your claim and they will confirm they have contacted you.
- jason Wthis number called a friends landline and asked for me...they gave me this number to call but it is not recognised????

- StephenHad a call from this number at 4.20PM today. Person on the phone claimed to be calling from a BIC for DWP and that it was a simple 10 minute review to see if anything had changed. He knew my name, my mobile and house phone and my address. He also knew some details which I gave when I signed up, like how much in savings I had (to make sure I wasn't over their limit).
After that he went on to ask about 30 questions which were all basically, do you live with a partner, do you live with someone who works, have you had any paid work in the last 6 months, have you had any unpaid work in the last 6 months etc. The only things he asked that were remotely alarming were which brand of bank I was with as a security question (nothing further like numbers) he also asked how much in savings I had currently which I told a fib as I'm not comfortable letting a stranger know how much I have in my account but it was likely him checking to see I haven't went over the limit/earned more than I'm able to on JSA. All in all he seemed very professional but I'm very anxious as it is. Phoned the number back and got the usual voicemail message telling me the line is DWP and they'll phone me back. Phoned up the Job Centre and they said they had no clue but took the number anyway. My theory is that if this BIC is not directly a part of the DWP and is merely performing calls for them maybe the numbers doesn't directly come up in their system and he didn't have knowledge of them? Perhaps you'd have to go higher up to find someone up knows about this.
I checked the JSA website and it says
Phone calls
When a BIC phones you, they’ll ask some security questions to check your identity.
You’ll never be asked for your bank account number or sort code to check your identity. You will be asked for the name of your bank as part of the review.
This sounds like exactly what happened but its strange the staff on the phone had no idea even though its on their official site! Still a bit worried but it seems to point to it being a legitimate call on behalf of the DWP.- Caller: DWP
- PaulHad 5 calls from this number on the 6th May, everytime I answered either the call would go dead or wait a few seconds then go dead. Didn't hear anything more until today 30th May when I received a letter from DWP telling me my benefits are being stopped from the 15th May because I had failed to return a JSA2 form, WTF!!!
Absolutely fuming....
Jobcentre and Ian Duncan Smith are scam artists!
- DarkSky40i got a call from this number 08000232635 14.50 pm 21/6/14 I didn't answer it.

- Perry replies to DannyExcept there's no evidence of anybody ever getting sanctioned for not answering. There is, in fact, several anecdotes of people ringing their local Job Centre and finding out that there is no evidence whatsoever of them needing to ring you, even when they do internal system checks of all DWP services.
- TGCI received a call on both my mobile and my landline, on both occasions they left a voicemail which said "Hello, this is the DWP, we tried to ring you but you did not answer. I will try again later, thank you." Notice anything conspicuously absent from this? How about my name, for one? This was especially suspicious on the landline as I live with my mother and she claims ESA whereas I am unfortunately on JSA. The message didn't make it clear who it was aimed at, so for all I know it might be one for me and one for her, although I suspect they were both targeted to me as it sounded like the same lady both times. Also, it mentioned nothing about what the call was about - every legitimate Job Centre call I've ever received has clearly stated my name if they've had to leave a message, and all but one have been very clear as to why they were ringing (the only exception was a particularly insensitive employee who just asked me to ring him back regarding a work placement I was on, gave me no information when I did, and I had to find out myself by directly contacting the employer that they were ending the placement early without warning). On all occasions where they have needed to speak to me, they have left a number to call them back on as well as reminding me of the times that they will be available till. NONE of this was in either one of these messages and, coupled with all the anecdotal evidence of unprofessional calls, refusal to give information over the phone, an inability to ring them back, hanging up seconds after people have answered, and Job Centre staff not knowing these calls had even taken place, as well as the fact that I cannot find the number on any official DWP website...all I can say is, if it really is the DWP, they've screwed up big-time. If it's a scam, it's bottom of the barrel scum behind it preying on the most disenfranchised, desperate and vulnerable people in society.
- Caller: Claims to be the DWP.
- plugJust got a call from this number, said my name, ok so far, asked what day I sign on, What a joke! I said I don't know who you are and I'm not answering any questions over the phone, she said she would send out a form, That will be fun!!
- Caller: Sounds dodgy to me!
- Ian McFerran| 1 reply08000232635 - This number seems to be being used by various organisations over the years. The UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) seems to be a common ID that is reported back by people who have been approached by them but the nature of the call is not akin to the DWP in that once the caller has your name, they hang up! Not very professional for the DWP, is it! So it is unlikely that it is them.
Therefore, it would seem that the caller is disguising their identity in order to obtain your details so that they can SELL your information onto other 3rd-parties and you then get more strange callers. My advice is this - if you aren't expecting a call and don't know the number being displayed... DON'T ANSWER! If they really need to speak to you, they will either write to you (if they are the DWP) or leave a message on your answer-phone. - Philip. replies to Ian McFerranI have just seen this post, I dialled the number and got a recorded message '' You were called by the Department Of Work And Pensions But Were Unavailable''. Says they will call you back
- JoeyThis number called and when I answered no one spoke, lots of people saying it's DWP but why are they ringing and not speaking? If they keep ringing me like other people have said I will threaten them with the police see if that gets a response from them.
- Caller: DWP
