Got a call, I asked who it was. The caller refused to disclose any information, even who he represented!
If it is the (shoddy) DWP, then why won't they announce it on the phone?

it is highly likely your phone number (im guessing a landline) will be someone's benefit claim and tehy will not have changed it just inform them they do not live at your property and you don't know them and they will eventually sort this out it may take a few weeks though

Called a couple times, my husband answered today, they asked for me and he said I was driving and then they hung up! Not very sociable but then if it is DWP/Jobcentre  they cant speak to hubby about the claim so whats the point of hanging around. I will ansa next time as it may be about the changes in benefits. Im on Incapacity Benefit and thats gonna be changing soon.

former DWP worker replies to Sally
Sometimes DWP call just to be certain that the number given is genuine, or to find out if you are at home (and therefore not working and claiming benefits).  They're not allowed to leave a message on an answerphone because this would be a breach of the Data Protection Act and are legally obliged to make sure they are talking to the right person.  They can't identify themselves until they're sure of your identity - calls can be recorded at random to make sure employees are following correct procedure.  They need permission from the claimant to speak to someone else on the phone about your claim: verbal permission is enough for a one-off, but they need written permission to do it as a matter of course (this doesn't apply to calls they need to make to verify a claim e.g. to a former employer or Council Tax department)
DWP staff cover 8am-8pm and would normally try several times to talk to you before sending out a letter.

It's DWP. It's a generic number that will appear on your phone regardless of who called you from whatever extension of the DWP or why.
I work for DWP and know that the call I received from this number today will have been my Mum working in head office on her lunch break!!

I got a call from this number at 11:00am and 2:20pm. i was expecting the call and had the phone at arms length the problem is that the phone rings for less than a second and they have already hung up!
iv seen that other people have had this exact same problem and i find it totally incompetent.

I had a phone call at my parents house ( i haven't lived there for 2 years) from a lady at DWP, she asked my mum if i was there an when she stated i wasn't but could give my landline number, the lady took my number but hasn't called? im confused as to why DWP would be calling me, im not on benefits my husband is claiming ESA  but im due to start work Monday so he will be re assessing that, but thats nothing the DWP would know as i haven't informed anyone that im starting work as only found out at 5pm tonight#?! so does anyone know what other reasons they would be calling for?:-/

I did not know who it was until I looked on here...I am unwell and I only lost a loved one recently and now they are trying to get in touch to send forms out and then 99% certain I will be sent for a medical with that certain company that is mentioned in the media. So I have so much to deal with. Not happy. So for anyone getting this call this could and is likely to be what it is about...

As I have no family anyone who calls me it usually bad news...I only found as I happened to use the 1471 facility otherwise I would not have known as I tend to leave the ringer off and just call out occasionally.
