Got a call from this number but could not hear anything so hung up and checked the number here. Now i know its DWP, I made a claim yesterday for income based JSA so it stands to reason they would be calling me.

Sounds as though most of you who demand to know who it is straight away are being agressive and really rather ridiculous. They phoned me this afternoon and the call went as follows:

dwp: Hello, can i speak to xxxxx please?
    me: Yes speaking
dwp: Hello, i'm xxx from dwp, i;m phoning about a claim for benefit you made recently
    me: oh yes
dwp: first of all can u please give me your NI number to confirm who you are?

Sorted out easily. Just give em a chance and be polite and you should have no problems

Well i never answer these types of numbers either 'cause it's either a scam or my bank offering me something that i don't need... but i do believe this one was because i made a JSA claim the other day. i didn't answer because, well.. i was sat next to my phone all day... and then i went for a [***]... then they rang while i was on the toilet.... couldn't answer in time. Darn it.

Got call today and they refused to say who they were until I confirmed who I was!!!
So I told them I would not tell them my name and they said bye and hung up.
I have call bar and when I put the 0800 number in it came up with a different number (01248 676585), I think it is the DSS but if it is they should say who they are and stop this Data Protection crap!!!!!!!!!

If the dwp wish to contact you then dont you think it would be safer by letter? and all you have done is to confirm your name and then give over your details to someone on the phone you dont know, thankfully this time it was ok.

@David. "If the dwp wish to contact you then dont you think it would be safer by letter?"

They sent me a letter saying that they'd call after which they'll send me a questionnaire. ;o)

In the passed I had to ring this number back as I missed 2 calls, ( this was on a previous claim ) unfortunately for reasons unknown they never picked up the phone... I literally must have gone about 30-40 calls until somebody picked up, now i'm not knocking the service these people provide they've all been kind and friendly to me as i've shown them respect since the first word, if you call the number back like I have right now! they will sort out there and then the appointment for signing the declaration and talk to your personal adviser, no offence to these people who say "they wouldn't give me there name or reason for calling so I hung up" that is extremely rude and very ignorant? you obviously were expecting a call from the Department or work and pensions so why wouldn't you just go through with the call.

I just got a call from this number and the caller would not give there name or what company they were calling from.
I searched the web and found this website, and i have read every comment here.

Now I called the 0800 0 55 66 88 number and was put through to Nathan.
He sounded agitated but I ignored it and just explained why i was calling and he put me through security.
When it came to booking the appt he asked for my post code again which i provided, he then ask another questions which i did not hear clearly and i said sorry could you please repeat that again as i did not hear you clearly, he then raised he's voice and said "it's not my fault you cant hear me". I said of course not but i just did not get the last question, he then sent on a rampage, accusing me of shouting at him, i quietly pointed out to him that it was not me doing the shouting, he told me he was not interested and put the phone down on me.

Now i am a 42 yr old man & have spent  16 yrs in banking and i was shaken by this. Just how rude can a person be to a complete stranger! Boy am I mad about this. And all this maybe because he has a job and I don't.

I regained my composure and called back and spoke to "Paul" who was polite and completed the appt for me.

Now DWP was been slammed on here and i can say that some of it is well earned, but you can get the odd polite person as i finally did.

If this is the DWP (I am expecting a call and this number has rung me twice today and was completely silent) then I am absolutely disgusted at the fact it is a silent phone call and then they hang up. We have TRUcall system on our phone to zap silent callers, of which I have just done as i had no idea who was silently calling me each time. This is freaky of the highest order and silent callers scare me, which is why i have just zapped them. Its incredible to me that a government department is doing silent phone calls on  a call centre system, where they dial loads of numbers together and only speak to the first person that answers which then hangs up on everyone else. They will now expect me to ring them on the 0845 number on my letter, at my expense of which I cannot afford, or my benefits will be removed if I don't. Just another appalling tactic from a government desperate to save money so thay scare people like me with silent phone calls. I am livid.

What are you going on about? They don't "dial loads of numbers together and only speak to the first person that answers". They obviously have a genuine reason for wanting to contact you and will have advised you that they would call.
