Report a phone call from 08000285085 and help to identify who and why is calling from this number.
- bobThat was filmed and shown in a separate program.
- BazwizardThis number belongs to BT customer services. They just rang me asking if I had been sending text messages to a number. I had. A number that keeps texting me to book a table at their resturant. So I gave them a taste of their own medicene and they did not like it. So it is perfectly safe.
- Caller: BT
- AndrewYes, it is BT services. I contacted them to cancel my Sport HD pack, and they phoned despite my having ticked the box to request a reply by email. I didn't pick up as I always check unrecognised numbers first, and then they sent me an email. Everything is now sorted OK.

- Dave replies to Joe| 1 replyHi Joe,
Firstly, I came on here to check who this number belongs to. I recognised the number instantly (although was not sure who it was off hand). However, I always check all numbers I'm not immediately familiar with before I accept a call. It cuts down on sales calls! The call was from BT and was genuine.
In response to your comments, the number in this post DOES belong to BT and has done for many, many years (I don't work for BT but I have had many dealings with them both personally and on behalf of clients). I therefore find it strange that BT have denied one of their major dial-out numbers as belonging to them.
However, I would suggest BT would have stated the "call" was a fraud and was not originated by them. Which is perfectly possible for the reasons given on here.
In all honesty, I don't know what you are expecting BT to do? If someone is intent on fraudulently calling you to obtain money by illegal means, BT are pretty much powerless to prevent it (unless the fraudulent caller is also an employee of BT). I lose track of how many emails I receive on a daily basis from senders purporting to be Paypal, Amazon, eBay, my bank, other banks and countless other businesses. All of which ask for personal details and all of which I could never expect those businesses to deal with. We are in unfortunate times where scammers will get around the system one way or another and we, as individuals, must take preventative action. To say BT stinks or to hold them to blame for the actions of would-be scammers is slightly unfair.
So, for the record… the number is that of BT. Saying it is a fraudulent number is scaremongering those who either are awaiting a call from BT or are being contacted for genuine matters (such as an unpaid bill).
However, I would never advise anyone to simply divulge bank details (or other personal/ sensitive data) without question. If you are unsure whether a call is genuine, ask for an account number and a call reference and politely say you will ring back. Do not ask them for a number as they may give a non-genuine number. Go to the main website for the company (bt.com in this instance) find the number on there (e.g. residential customer service) and ring that number quoting the reference (don't simply return the call to the number which has rung you as this may not be genuine). You will then find out if the call is genuine before handing out your sensitive details.
This advice goes for all callers not just BT. You should also exercise similar caution with emails!
So, in brief… this number belongs to BT but, it is possible all calls from this number are not genuine!
Dave - Steph| 1 replyWe have been receiving 2 or 3 calls from this number a day for weeks. My husband just got off the phone to the genuine BT regarding being charged for BT sports after we left BT. Just as he hung up this number called so he answered it. A lady said she was from BT and we owed money. He asked how much and what it was for. She replied a completely different amount to what BT were trying to charge for BT sports and told him it was for broadband. When he said she was lying, he had just spoken to the genuine BT and they must be a scam she became flustered and quickly thanked him and hung up.
- Mansell replies to SeriouslyWe don't have a statute of limitations as such in England. And as far as I know HMRC can go back as far as they wish, but we, on the other hand, can only claim back overpaid tax as far back as six years. Nice to know the law is balanced isn't it?
- Mansell replies to Dave"... I don't know what you are expecting BT to do?" I expect BT to contact me by e-mail, which is the method I chose when they asked me for my preference.
- Mansell replies to StephThere are technical reasons why you may owe money for BT Sport even if you left BT broadband at the end of your contract. There are quite a few posts regarding this on the forum on BT's own help pages.
Funny that the scammer should call just after your husband had spoken to BT. How unlucky for her. - Gamboosha replies to BT EmployeeWhat utter rot! This IS a BT number, the ene they call from from to follow up the progress of fault rectification. Whoever "BT Employee" is, he or she is mischievous and should be ignored. If you've reported a fault you need to answer these calls. Like I just have to receive important information about the investigation of a problem I have been experiencing with BT Infinity.
- Hannah MorganCouldnt understand a word they said, and hanged up straight away
- not naiveThe caller sounded as tho' he may have been Asian and said he worked for bt. He was reluctant to give a reason for calling and more interested in gaining information. Eventually he said that he thought we had reported a fault which he was going to fix. We hadn't reported a fault so we knew it was bogus. I said if you are from bt and there is a fault .......get on with it
- Caller: allegedly bt
- E. McinnesI have been getting calls on mobile from this number but ignored them till today.I have been dealing with BT on a fault that I had, today an engineer came out and rectified the problem. So when this number called I ignored twice within mins but on third I answered and was told by an foreign accent say BT,thankfully I was on landline to my family who heard me answer and was told hang up as its a scam.So you see how easy it was to be fooled.
- Caller: 08000285085
- darrenI have been getting calls from this number several times a week, I rang the number back and there was an answerphone message claiming to be bt and they would call me back.
as a bt customer I called bt and asked if this number was one of their number's and the customer services operative informed me that this is not a bt number and I should not ring it under any circumstances,
the number has now been blocked though I can see they have tried calling again this morning intelligence cant be one of these obvious scammers strongpoints.
beware everyone.- Caller: not bt as claimed by them.
- Irene| 2 repliesThey mention my name. They call from BT and when I ask what is the matter she answers you have a problem with Direct Debit cannot pay my bill. I have had this call twice and she is an indian lady and I told her she was spam and leave me alone. No way I speak to people that I have not asked for even if it is BT.. Hope BT will follow up these people.
