So if it is BT, why did they call me on my mobile tonight at 9.30pm?

I have had about 8 reverse charge calls from this number in the last 30 minutes. The automated message says the caller is "Caroline."  To accept the call costs over £2.00.  I didn't accept any of them, this is obviously some kind of scam

This is a number transmitted by BT Openreach customer support.

However everyone must understand that it is very easy to fake the outgoing callerid these days.
The number you see on the screen does not always truly represent the originator of the call.

this is a BT number - it is a computer generated call. In my case it confirmed when the engineer appointment was

They hung up when I answered. I have got some BT stuff happening though, so perhaps it was BT. Would be nice if they stayed on the phone though and explained what they wanted!

Calls from any BT staff member run through this generic number. It could be someone you know trying to get in touch from a work line. My best mate is a BT manager and when he calls me its this number.

I have had a guy ringing and hanging up on me 5 times.  What a loser company to do this to people.

Like many I never answer unknown numbers and always check for feedback on sites like this. Whilst complaining about many, on the ONE occasion, it was a genuine automated call letting me know when our BT engineers was arriving.

I was out, my excellent Truecall machine picked up and the caller hung up during screening.  But I THINK it was BT asking if I'd accept a reverse charges call ...!  HOWEVER, my Truecall HAS recorded part of a message saying, "... a one-off charge of £2.00 per call PLUS £1.65 per 30 seconds"(!!!).
Obviously, once they've got someone to accept the call, they'll then keep them talking for ages under some deceitful pretext or another.  Unbelievable - these people must think we've got more money than brains!

Take it you read Steve's comments above (4/2/15) - perhaps to be taken with due consideration, but 2nd para holds true, we all need to be aware that caller id number in display not 'always' what it seems ... now THAT should be a crimboffence but don't imagine our comms providers will be happy if the politicos could be bothered to bring that in!

These calls are the result of the typical abysmal service provided by B.T. I have just rang it back, (because nobody there when I answer it or it rings off prior to me getting to my mobile) and it says they tried to call but I didn't answer, (yes, blame the customers, much easier and excuses you) and goes on to say no need to ring them back...Well, why on earth were they ringing for something so 'unimportant' it didn't warrant my calling back or them leaving a message? I am expecting a B.T engineer today between 0800 - 1300 and have had the customary 'threat' that if I'm not here on arrival I will be charged £125.00. So, ladies and gentlemen, if they were calling to tell me THEY were not going to turn up I wondier if I will be able to charge them £125.00 for not meeting the appointment? (And pigs might fly).

Hello! you are Wrong, this is BT, but effectively they should use a proper phone line to ensure the user can call back, I work in specialised support line part of BT and if someone try to call back this goes to that number, so the BT person should give their own direct number so you can call them, this is a REAL BT number :)

Called me tonight (27 May 2015) at 1736 hours and after three rings, they cleared down.   I was waiting for an important phone call and I nearly broke my neck in trying to get to the phone in time.   The air instantly turned blue: but then you don't want to know about that do you!!

I have had half a dozen calls from this number in the early hours of the morning. It is always the same voice, that of an Indian lady. During the day I would be wearing a hearing aid so I can't tell what she says. When I tell her she has awoken me with a wrong number she says she is very sorry and hangs up.

I've had a total of five calls from this number and they've left two voicemail messages claiming to be from BT regarding the 'issues' I am having with the line and how this is due to my two accounts or whatever. Seeing as I'm not even with BT they can do one if they ring again, I sure as hell am NOT answering to them.

This number was shown on my caller display when I requested a ring back line test from BT.
