I have a good friend in BT Brentwood Essex offices. This number appears when he rings me personally from work. It's just a number allocated to lots of outgoing lines from them.
I have no idea how the other prank calls got to you. But I can Verify this IS a genuine British Telecom outgoing line number. If you ring it, dont expect to get the person who called you direct. It is OUTGOING only.

Bought sim card from three shop 20 mins ago within 2 mins of putting it in this phone had call from this number . I haven't even used phone so how they have number I don't have a clue .

Mobile numbers belong to the providers and not the customer.
If you cancel a contract or a number,  the number is re used within a short period.

I sent a rude and abusive text message to a very old friend last year.
His number had been saved in my phone for years so i assumed that it was ok...
I was very wrong.
The message went to a young girl and I had a angry father calling me back. .
Don't know how long the phone companies wait before they recycle old mobile numbers..

A male person. With a heavy Asian accent called and asked for my wife in person. The phone is registered in my name. They said it was regarding my bill which would have to be paid via direct debit. When I asked for proof that the person was from BT he gave me , what he said was the date and amount of my last bill. When I refused to give him my bank details he said he would cut me off. As he was now talking about my wife's mobile by this time which is with EE and is on direct debit. I was sure it was a scam. Later tried to phone back and a recorded message said it was BT. When I phoned the BT number from the phone book for complaints that was a different number THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A SCAM. and there was nothing on their records regarding this or any record of a genuine contact to me.

I've had at least 8 calls in the space of 30 min they say it's BT reverse charge call then give different names this has been going on for months and months

Who is this

This call came in at 1.13 am and woke me up from deep sleep .Who and Why they are calling and at this time ,what do they want and gain by harassing people ? Unable to go back to sleep again .

Could it be that a scam caller is spoofing a genuine number in order to get folk to answer?

just got left a message from them saying it was BT re an order, at least that's what I think it said as the guy was from an Indian call centre and just gabbled away in almost incomprehensible English

Had 8 yes 8 calls from this number today and 3 was in 2minutes of each other - if you want me to phone you back say who you are on the amswerfone - getting on my nerves now

Its quite obviously BT isnt it...I had the call and my internet was down, its for sure BT

3 calls received from this number to my mobile between 13:27 and 13:31!  All blocked.  Also a call to my business line at 13:28 with no message left.  That is blanket coverage.  I thought they were not allowed to call business lines.  If so, this cannot be BT as my business line is with them and they know it is a business.

Got a call from this number I did not answer , but could loads of people talking and laughing in the background  before  phone cut off ,sounds like your standard call centre .

Actually I used the BT "17070" test number to check that my phone was operating and pushed option 1 for a ring back test. and this was the number registered on my phone after the ring back test.    try it and see.

Just rings and hangs up, getting about six a day from 9 am until 9 pm

Just a note that this number can be used for legitimate purposes as well as nuisance calls - I had an Openreach engineer call and leave a message via this number to re-arrange a fibre broadband installation appointment. If you're expecting a call from Openreach/BT, then it should be safe to answer.

This number called my mobile on 18th May 2016 but left no message.

Answered and got recorded music then hung up.

I work for BT too and got this call. I didn't answer though. no message was left.
