I'm getting really [***] off with this company calling now.  Sometimes several times a day.  I'm one more call away from answering them and telling them where to go.  Has anyone successfully removed themselves from their call list?  My blood is boiling right now.

i work for the Listening Company. we are a large outsource contact centre with offices in richmond, portsmouth, newcastle, manchester, brora and others. the company is 100% legitimate and the number shown here is one of the outbound numbers that shows up when any agent makes an outbound call. i work on the Sky campaign and it is perfectly normal to ask for the dob/maiden name/address etc before speaking to any customer, so that no changes can be made to the account without guaranteeing it is you that we are speaking to.

MBNA, Sky, Orange, VW etc (in fact, all campaigns) will have used this number on outbound calls previously. No kind of automatic dialling equipment is ever used, so this is NOT the reason for any silent calls. Sadly the reason will be that the systems we use are absolutely terrible, and on 99% of silent calls i guarantee you there is an equally frustrated person on the other end of the phone either frantically saying hello or cursing their computer for once again cutting off/not connecting or dropping a call. To be removed from any kind of dialling list is much the same as with any other kind of contact. Do not contact the Listening Company directly, as this is not how to avoid contact. Depending on the nature of it there are 2 methods:

If calling from a company you are assosciated with (eg. Sky etc) and you are being called in relation to your account, you will not be told why until you have passed DPA (the info we ask for is useless to the agent, and the office environment is paperless so there is no way of stealing these useless details anyway). To stop outbound contact simply call the company and ask them why they have called you, it wont have been for no reason and you will usually get an explanation and subsequently wont receive any more calls)

As far as cold calls go when you have no association with the company you are being called on behalf of, it is the same as anything else, speak to TPS, reject anonymous calls etc. It is a sad state of affairs that companies get their hands on your phone number, but it is not The Listening Company that are obtaining your details, they are merely being passed them by the company they are calling you on behalf of, and the reasons for the calls are not any kind of scam. Many still get such calls after registering on the TPS because older lists and sources of these numbers are still floating around, and it takes time for them to filter through the system.

I am not condoning any kind of cold calling, it infuriates me as much as the next man, but some of the speculation happening here is quite frankly absurd. We all know, the system, the rules and the regulations and the governing of things such as cold (or even luke-warm) calliing are sub-par and need a real overhaul, but it is not The Listening Company that is trying to scam you, bother you or obtain money/details from you in any way.

Just got a call from this number claiming to be O2 and wanted to speak to the account holder... I clicked it was dodgey when they said "Hello, this is O2... the phone seller"

    1) No name of caller.
    2) Felt the need to explain what O2 was... surely if I was a customer I'd be aware of what they are.
    3) "phone seller".... LOL

I had a call from this number - difficult to understand the name of the company, but wanted to know how I felt about identity fraud, which they claim takes an average of 529 days to discover!!!!  I told them that whatever I would do about it, it would not involve talking to a stranger on the phone and hung up.

Wrong. You are a SPAMMER or the worst kind, because you use cold call tactics, with no human speaking on the other end. Also, you have no respect for the TPS, even when the phone number has been registered with the latter for years.

I can vouch for walker449, i work on the MBNA/Virgin money outbound team. I get no hassle as we are doing warm calls to customers who opted to hear more from MBNA/Virgin Money and we dont ask for details unless they take up our offer.

I had to check this website out because a chap i was speaking to on the phone told me that we where scammers and trying to sell him a mobile phone when i was actually calling from his credit card provider?

If you do not want any more calls just call 08000324617 which is the listening companies unsubscribe line. This will remove you from any lists we may have you on as a marketing company as a whole. we represent about 50 different companies for inbound and outbound call center work (yes we also deal with the inbound work for most of the companies too) and if you opt to receive marketing calls during your application with these companies we will call you regardless if you are on the TPS because the TPS is only applicable on cold calls instead of lead based calls. My understanding is that the listening company do not do any kind of cold calling and when we do then we enforce the TPS rules thoroughly (it was part of my training that we knew about it just in case we did have to do a cold call run)

Also please get rid of this mentality that the person calling you is the company or a person trying to scam you out of money. They are a person like you and me who are actually working instead of living off the government, paying their taxes. It is not the most glamorous of jobs but at least you are not paying for me to sit around at home all day "looking for jobs".
