I have found that a good way to discourage nuisance is to waste as much of their time as possible.  I have turned it into a game.  I claim to be a bit deaf and get them to speak slowley and loudly.  I mis-spell or mis-understand any word and get them to spell it then spell it back wrong and get them on to the phonetic alphabet.  It is a real score if I can get them to spell the words of the phonetic alphabet. I give unexpected answers to questions i.e.
Q)"where do you live?"
A)"well I live here"
Q)where is here?"
A)"I don't know it only says International on the call minder"
Q) "No, your address"
A) "No I'm not, I'm a pair of brown corduroys and an attractive poncho"

Of course I am retired so have the time but the number of calls has significantly reduced since I started this.  My longest call was 30.5 mins and the average is about 10 mins.  It is a win if they ring off"

These tossers have started calling both my mobile and home line nearly every day despite the fact it CLEARLY STATES on their own site mobile numbers are ONLY USED SO YOU CAN SMS METER READINGS TO THEM.

These lying tosspots wont even provide their own name or the name of their manager, despite the fact they are LEGALLY OBLIGED TO if asked.  In fact once when I managed to get a full name out of them it turned out to be bogus.

A silent call - so I hung up.

BG again, thats O2, Carphone Warehouse, Orange and a credit card company all now calling me on a regular basis, how popular am I. I tell them to leave me alone, I'm only a customer to two of them but it does not abate.

several cold calls last few weeks, very annoying as I have to rush to phone to stop it going to answer phone. How do I stop these calls?

We have recently changed landline numbers, and providers. We have been getting calls from this number, asking for a specific person who does not and has never lived here. The first time my partner answered and was polite. The second the same, and explained they had the wrong number. In reply to this, the caller said, and I quote, "We don't have the wrong number, I think you will find your giving us the wrong name!", at which point my partner then saw red and became angered with the caller. I wont go into the rest of the call, but they did give out the address of the person they where looking for (surely against some sort of privacy laws?) and it was not our address. The calls have been coming about twice a week, from the first week we had the line installed. We have now submited our number to the opt out site, and hope they do stop, but I would like to say how disgusted I am at the cheek of these people, and that this should be made illegal, and easier to complain about, and have something done about. At the end of the day, it is harrassment in my own home!

They keep calling me to answer a survey - I have asked them not to call again but to e-mail since they have my e-mail details on file! Even with we still get the calls!

The pest called me yesterday afternoon. I told him that I did not want to be reminded that I "used to be a loyal customer" (do they wonder why I stopped being one?) and told him to take my name and number off their register.

Guess what? Today at 1225 I get another call, but they hung up when the answerphone cut in.

I was called on the 8th july and asked," When did you last have your boiler serviced" My reply "yesterday at a cost of £30.00"
not put off he then asked " Ok, If your boiler brokedown at 02.00am who would you call"
Answer" No one as would be asleep, and when i did wake up would call the lovley bloke that put my new boiler & centra,lheating in for 1/2 the price of British Gas,

He hung up ??

Also had a call from overseas(no. witheld) asking for the Homeowner. regarding the grant we had been awarded for isulation?? I politely told the young man that the Homeowner was serving time for attempted murder of a teephone sales rep and would'nt be available for some years ,He hung up as well !!

I'm in Dubai working at the moment and have left a msg on my UK MoB saying to redial my Dubai number if you want to talk to me. They have called my UK MoB every day this week at least once. Not happy and will get hold of them once I'm back.

been getting phone calls from this number for two weeks now my fiance eventually took the call but the woman asked him to confirm our address which raised alarm bells so he said well you should know you tell me

they left it at that now they have called again today i dont think it is british gas i think its a dodgy company

Called today at 15:57pm and woke the baby but the call was (probably) one of those computer generated ones as nobody was on the line when I answered.  

We do use them for utilities and a Homecare package so they will have been confirming the annual service and will be getting a telling off when they ring back.

Doesn't seem to matter how you try to stop BG from telemarketing, they just keep on trying. They are a complete pain.

Had 2 calls from these today and both times when i've answered there's been an automated message saying there isn't any advisor's to deal with the call and they'll try calling again another time. Very pointless and quite annoying after a couple of times.

Not so sir you had to pick on the fact he was Irish it's really not the way to go about things.

Same thing here BG keep calling but we have never given them this number as it is only used for friends and family.

A good way to deal with these type of calls, when they ask for the householder or even someone by name is to reply:  "No, he's dead".  An Asian-sounding chap said yesterday:  "Oh, I'm sorry about that".  "Yes, so am I" was my reply........then he hung up.

Alternatively, say the required person is in prison.  Either answer stops them in their tracks.
