    Steve Evans replies to JW
JW's post (referenced above) is the most sensible thing I've read on here. 0845 3003950 *is* a valid number used by HMRC for outbound calls only. But it's easy to spoof Caller ID, so if you do get a call apparently from this number it may well be from a crook.

HMRC's standard procedure is then to ask personal questions to identify you, when *they have called you and you have no proof that they are who they say*. This is terrible practice and something that no legitimate organisation should do. It's an absolute gift for the Identity Thieves, who can spoof their Caller ID and go through the standard HMRC patter to get victims to cough up their personal details.

Now please read JW's post and follow his advice!

Got a call at about 7:15 pm from a young person with a scottish accent stating he was from HM Revenue & Customs and wanted to speak to a Mr Brown. I told him it was a wrong number.  So that he could remove my number from his list he wanted me to confirm the number he dialed which he stated.  I told him he could have dialed any random number.  If he was from HMRC he can write a letter. I put the phone down on him.

I got a call from this number early afternoon today.  It was quiet at first on the line made me think it was a foreign line.  When spoke the man asked for a Mr H G WELLS.  Now excuse me but even though they said they were hmrc, the only way I could confirm it was to google the 1471 number.  I am a single mum on benefits and tax credits which are all fine and said I was confused why my number kept getting these calls, last time asking for a Mr GUPTA.  I asked were they taking the mickey out of me by the use of the different names and was told no.  I had to confirm my number to hopefully action my request for them to remove it from their systems.

Now as said I am on tax credit and benefits, had no letter and are classed as vulnerable due to illness.  Why when they have my number for my claim, have they managed to confuse it with all these other people.  My benefits are accurate and up to date and if they asked for me, it would be a different matter, but they ask for all these names, mainly male and I am a single mum.  One female of a same surname but different first name who I havnt got the foggiest, so surely there is a problem with either their data base or the linking of outgoing calls connected relating to whats on their screens.

Suffering from illness and mental health issues, I am trying to laugh about it but you can understand that this is spooking me.  I dont know if the people on the phone are real as they keep asking for all these people, but the number above is always on the 1471 with date and time of call.  I dont want to answer the phone especially on saturday, because thats when they call and today I did and look what happened.

And forgive me but the only HG WELLS I know died in 1946 and was a famous author according to wikipedia, thought it was familiar.

can I put an end to this nonsense?
please read ALL the posts, now show me the one where someone says they were ACTUALLY scammed by this number (a clue - you will not find one). This number has been in use yor years now, generating hundreds of paranoid comments on here. Yet not one single person had reported a single penny being lost due to this number. If this was a scam then it must be worst scam in history,as it doesnt seen to have worked on anyone, or maybe it really is a genuine call? Now please concentrate you efforts on finding out who shot JFK.

are you all really as paranoid as you sound, i've been calling out using that number for the last 5 years, work for HMRC in Glasgow. If you dont pay your tax or submit returns on time, owe back overpayments in Tax Credits or have o/s VAT liabilities and then dont reply to letters sent to you why the hell are you surprised or suspicious when the Revenue eventually phone you?
ignorant paranoid folk that hang up on us and then face legal action coz we cant get to talk to them are a constant source of amusment to HMRC, we hear the same stupid arguments on a daily basis from people unwilling to supply information easily available from a phonebook to a goverment dept that just wants to be sure its talking to the right person! lol
i suppose tho as long as you carry on behaving like some weird conspirency obsessed american then i'll have a job for life

Do we really have a Tax Officer who is so downright rude about Taxpayers as "Taxman".    Copying Brown's manners with the general public?   Simply typifying the public "servants" usual attitude?

Do we really have a Tax Officer who finds spelling, grammar, and punctuation so tricky?

    Probably.

He is in a job and a pension for life anyway........and we poor "ignorant paranoid folk" pay both his wages and his pension.   This is a Thursday.   Is he on this site during working hours?

Let's hope the forthcoming cuts in Public Service reach him and his like.

How nice of SIKOVIT to acknowledge the fact that the number is legit and HMRC are chasing tax dodgers. Just pay your tax people and then you won't get any more calls from us. The poor HMRC now work evenings and weekends to chase all the wasters who will not pay up. Put us out of a job by paying up, and shutting up.

It is definitely a legitimate number. I rang the employer helpline and asked them to verify it. It is one of their centres in Norwich and they deal with debt recovery.

I had a call from this number today, I answered, couldn't hear anything and said hello a few times, and as I hung up someone began to speak. I phoned back an official HM Revenue number and they said as a student I wouldn't be getting these calls and it could be a wrong number but I've only had this number for a week. The details HM Revenue had on me were details at least 6 years old because I had my last name changed and they still have the old name, also I lived in a different city and have moved at least 5 times since the address they had for me! Not sure what to think, I guess just be cautious.

I was called by this number last Saturday and my wife was called yesterday morning at 8.00.
on both occasions we were asked for by name and asked for our NI no's.
Needless to say we didn't give them.
I checked the No. on here and found this confusing thread.
Some say scam, some say genuine.
So I phoned the Tax Credit helpline 0845 300 3900 just now, and explained what had happened.
He noted the numbers and said they sounded similar to the debt collection agency that they use, but they weren't the same as any that he had in his directory.
I asked him to check my account and it turns out that I had been overpaid 100 odd quid in the 05-06 period.

My advice is: don't give your details of any description to unsolicited callers. Call an officially listed number and ask if they wanted to contact you.
