Regardless of whether the call is genuine or not, it's madness that they call you then want you to give sensitive info. They could be anyone, good rule of thumb don't give any info or bank details to a stranger, if you owe them money let them write to you.

This a legitimate No. They called me twice  first I ignored then called them the second time and the details they gave me were correct, they were asking  about Tax Credit Overpayement in 2004 which I was aware of and had to pay anyway. So do not be alarmed its ok, call them they have a good reason for calling you.

This is a scam. No office opens on a Sunday like this, even Inland Revenue or HMRC. I just got a missed call from them. No voicemail. Nothing. And these people are probably putting posts on a site like this saying it's ok to call! DO ONE!

I had a call today from this number but when I answered they hung up, I do not believe it is a real HMRC number and I would not give any details over the phone. I am going to report this number to the authorities

I just had a call from this number also, no message either, I had a red letter from HMRC yesterday saying I hadn't filed my companies PAYE/NI contributions for January yet (even though I have) so I called the number back on that, they confirmed to me that HMRC had rang me this morning and even quoted the exact time.

Plus the very nice and polite woman on the phone confirmed that the return had been recieved but was only processed the day after the red letter went out and the call was due to a cross over.

I have been very secptical reading this forum but as I called back on a listed HMRC number and was told by them that it IS a dial out number for HMRC, I would say its 100% genuine and not a scam.... unfortunately :( lol

Anyone who is left details or a message to call back is never given 0845 3003950 as that is the number they dial out on, anyone calling back that number will just get an automated message. The number you are asked to dial should end in 1420, 1424, 1426 or 1427 - each relating to a different type of tax or tax credit.
I am surprised that those people who were so disgusted and adamant at getting the numbers removed from service have not since come back on here. Does that say anything about what has happened when they tried reporting the scam?
These are genuine calls from debt management within HMRC and anyone recieving one should have been expecting it anyway. If not, then check with the office you usually speak to, they will tell you about your outstanding balance or tax return and put you through to the same office who dial out!

This is a tax credit overpayment line and it is a genuine number. It could be an overpayment from years ago it doesn't mean it has to be recent. This is just a automatic dialing number and they may call you from another number also.

What I think people here are fundamentally not realising is that CALLED ID IS NOT SECURE AND CAN EASILY BE SPOOFED, particularly easily from VOIP (Voice over IP) phones.

THIS NUMBER IS DEFINITELY A NUMBER PRESENTED AS CALLER ID BY GENUINE OUTBOUND HMRC CALLS - HOWEVER YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS DOES *NOT* MEAN THAT EVERY CALL YOU RECEIVE WITH THIS NUMBER IS FROM THE HMRC!

This is why you have some people here saying that these calls are legitimate, they are not lying, and also why some people are 100% certain that these calls are fake, they are correct too.

YOU CANNOT RELY ON THE CALLER ID TO IDENTIFY THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE CALL. Google "Caller ID Spoofing" to see how easy this is, if you still don't get this.

If anyone gets calls from this number, follow sensible securiy procedures and ask them to confirm partial information, such as the 4th and 6th digits of your NI or UTR codes, and if you're not happy independently look up a contact number for the HMRC from their website and call them back.

In these days of internet fraud everyone has the right to be suspicious but let me clear up a few things. I work for said dept which is genuine HMRC. We work from 8-8 soon to be 8-10. this is to accomodate people who work during the day. We have tel numbers which are supplied by forms you file. We do write to people first. You get a tel call from the debt recovery dept if you have not responded to letters.(maybe they went astray?) maybe you moved and never told us? 3950 is the number that calls out but it does not accept calls back. We will leave a msg with the number we want you to call back on depending on the tax we think you owe. this could be PAYE, SA,Tax credits,VAT, Cotax. There may be times when you have paid the debt but it has possibly been placed in wrong year etc. It is in your interest to call us back to clear it up. If you ignore it and you owe tax you will rack up interest and penalties so do yourself a favour. We will not speak to you unles you complete security on the details we hold for you. This is usually, reference number or NINo, name full address, tel no,d.o.b or trade. I am sorry you find the calls threatning but they are only people who are trying to help you and have a duty of care to you to tell you if you continue to ignore letters or calls Legal action can ensue if you do not call back within 48 hours. You can complain in writing address on website. All complaints are answered within 15 days. hope this helps :)
Regards the cheers scottish tax inspector ;/ Incidentally you may get a call from Scotland or England as we have offices all over both countries.

Got a call as well but was too late to answer. However, here are a few questions for those who claim it is genuine:

    # why do some callers receive only one ring?
    # can they identify themselves e.g. by confirming name and department & town/postal address?
    # if they ask to be called back: can they give a geo number? They cannot expect people to use their mobiles or non included minutes for 0845s.

If all this doesn't really match, I'd ignore them!

I got a call from 0845 3003950 and was a bit concerned when they were asking me to provide personal details to confirm who I was when they were the ones who phoned me on my personal mobile.

Anyway, I refused to give details but agreed I would speak to them on a general nature to which they agreed.

They told me I had filled out my Self Assesment form incorrectly and that it if I was unwilling to confirm details with them then to get the contact number from the Inland Revenue site and contact them directly.

I called 0845 9000444 which is the Self Assesment help line and they advised me that they do get 3rd party company's to contact clients on their behalf advising them to contact HMRC.  HMRC confirmed that my Self Assesment had been filled out incorrectly and that is why I was contacted.

I'm glad I checked tho as doing so has saved me £100 in penalties and me owing them any more money.

    Hope this helps.

    This is not a scam.
We have had a call from this number in regards to company PAYE.
We called back and they had info in reference to previous payments.
No scam would have hacked HMRC for that data and even if they had, the payments due would have gone to HMRC not the scam.

    It's a scam ... scam ... scam ... scam.

    It's a variant of :

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/examples.htm

i called them back gave my real name ... a fake NI number, fake account details etc. They passed me through "security tests" ...

They used two different numbers :

    0845 302 1424 and 0845 3003950

Revenue and customs do almost all communication via letter ... DO NOT BELIEVE these crooks.

Just got a call from thin no. on my mobile. Didn't answer. Some of the posts below said it's a legit HMR no. for tax credits. Still, isn't it a bit odd that they call me on a Sunday?? Are they that keen on giving me my credit back?!
