- Caller: Populus
- brainyget calls from this number frequently, i don't answer as it shows on caller display and also seems to follow short time after another call which shows as international. i have answered a couple of times but always silent. sometimes they ring to answerphone and sometimes just a few rings then stop. these calls come at all sorts of times from early morning thro' to evening and also at week ends.
never mind going to mars, STOP THESE CALLS BOFFINS !---PLEASE--- - Blue PenThey called me today, but I didn't answer. They left an automated message saying they are Talk Talk Financial Department, and it was about my account. I am not with Talk Talk. They are probably after your financial information.
- Caller: Talk Talk
- GrrrrCalled one evening saying they were Honeycomb doing market research for RBS. I explained I was dealing with my young baby & could they call back. They called back tonight at 9pm >:( not happy as it woke my baby.
- Caller: Honeycomb
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Miss R MaclachlanCan you please tell me, exactly who this is?
- RichardI have just had a call from this number. I think she said the company was called SPA, but I may have mis-heard. She wanted to do a survey for Transport for London. When I asked how she got my ex-directory number, she said they used random dialling. I asked them not to call again, and did not do the survey.
- Caller: SPA(?)
- Call type: Survey
- TrinBriI got two calls and like the others, the first time they hung up, the second time I saw the number and ignored it.
This should be illegal. - VonnieThis company keeps calling me on my mobile phone which is registered in Ireland. I explained to the last person who called that I could not take part in her survey as it was costing me money, She got very annoyed and insisted that it wasn't costing me money so I hung up on her.
- Caller: Populous
- Call type: Survey
- Worked for PopulusI worked for Populus, the numbers are randomly generated, so the numbers don't 'come' from anywhere, and whoever said they were looking for the youngest male under 18 must have misheard correctly, as Populus don't survey people under 18.
- Caller: Populus
- Call type: Survey
- Gillybean| 3 repliesCall from these today while I was in work, on my mobile. I only found out who it was from coming on here (again, major thanks for this valuable site), as I can't answer my phone in work.
The numbers cannot be ''randomly generated'' as the above staff member says. If they were, then they would not be able to repeatedly call people - the chances of getting the same number twice, when you take into account both fixed and mobile phone numbers are probably greater than your chance of winning the lottery! - DavidThey called me yesterday when I was out.
- gerrygot a call just now, i am ex directory and in ireland, call was to land line!!! i did not answer.
- DavidCalled today.
- Anon| 5 repliesHey. I called around to find out exactly who this company was and even checked with Companies House where all the details of a company are stored. This is a genuine market research company named Populus Data Solutions. They call people on a wide variety of different issues. I called their landline 0191 265 0525 and spoke to a supervisor at the company who was able to clarify a lot of the queries posted here. She was very friendly and helpful and would advise anyone with any questions to give them a call. If you do not wish to be called by them again, I would again advise calling the Landline and requesting to be put on their DO NOT CALL REGISTER.
Firstly, the numbers are randomly generated. What happens is that the company is given a certain amount of surveys to complete. To do this they generate about 10,000 numbers. These numbers are generated by creating a number and changing the final digit. Once this batch is created they will call each number and only these numbers. If they get an answering machine it will be called back about 2 hours later, if it is engaged then it will be called back about 15 mins later. The number is dialled 5 times and unless an appointment is made it will then go into a folder to not be called again until the next survey comes along. If an appointment is made then it will be put into the appointment folder, and will be used until the person answers the phone again or until the survey is finished. This is how you will get repeated calls as your number will be one of the 10,000 that they will use for the survey.
A lot of people mentioned that they are ex directory or registered with the TPS. This does not stop them from calling and they are NOT breaking any laws by doing so. Ex Directory basically means that your number does not appear on a list. As explained above the number did not come from a list and there is no requirement for them to screen against this. With TPS if you look on the TPS website you will see that TPS only stops sales and marketing calls. As Populus is doing neither they are again NOT breaking any laws or regulations by calling you. No matter how annoying it is.
The only two ways to get out of them calling you ever again that the Supervisor gave me is by putting a call blocker on your phone which basically means that whenever anyone calls you it will ask them to hang up the phone unless they know you personally, others will ask for a pin in order to be put through and some request that the company calling puts you on their DO NOT CALL REGISTER. The other way is to actively ask the company to place you on their DO NOT CALL REGISTER. You can either so this by calling 0191 265 0525 and giving them your number or by waiting for them to call and asking to be placed on it. It is very important that you specifically call it the DO NOT CALL REGISTER as if you ask to be taken off the database it doesnt fall under the regulations and 9/10 times they will just put it down as a refusal and you will be called again the next time a survey comes up in your area.
What I would strongly recommend is either calling them directly, or asking to be put through to a Quality Assessor or a Supervisor who will ensure that your number is placed on the register as they are the ones who input this onto the system, it is not the people calling who do. They have to write down your number and pass it onto a supervisor who will email the number to Head Office.
I have also queried why they go by different names as sometimes they call themselves Populus (political surveys), sometimes Honeycomb (financial surveys), sometimes SPA Future Thinking (customer satisfaction), or RED C Research (irish surveys) this is because these companies work together. They are all part of a partnership with a mother company so in order to work more efficiently they all do surveys on behalf of one another. RED C Research and Populus Data Solutions are both owned by a man named Patrick Diamond.
Hopefully this answers a lot of your questions!
Any more questions I would advise you to call the company and ask to speak to a supervisor or the Centre Manager Christine Shill or Alex Bain.- Caller: Populus Data Solutions
- Call type: Survey
- SkpeticalSo, 'anonymous' person writing above. Which one are you? Alex Bain or Christine Shill?
- ChrissytGeordie male said calling from Populos. Asked to speak to someone between 18 & 45, told him there was no one in that age group, he then asked to speak to a male over the age of 18 again, no one in the household fits that profile so he asked if he could speak to me, I reminded him I did not fit the profile and he said that's ok as Long as you are under 65, seems they will speak to anyone! Told him I was busy. He was polite, and I know they are doing a thankless task, but .......
- Caller: Populous

- mellisa replies to Gillybeanthe numbers are randomly generated. when someone answers, the staff member simply makes an appointment to ring back the person who has answered (because people who answer are usually too stupid to say 'please remove me') has said something like 'sorry i am busy now.'...that is how and why the numbers are rung repeatedly. they wouldnt be calling you back if you if you had refused them.
- Paul replies to AnonSo my question here is What is Patrick Diamonds phone number so I can keep ringing him and hanging up!!
