This number keeps calling and putting the phone down when we answer.

a male voice quickly said he was calling from a company (too quickly to catch name) then asked if it was a business number he was ringing when I replied yes he said wrong number and put down the phone

Anon, clearly they have given you the wrong information hear.... Populus purchase names and phone numbers from data media owners collected from online surveys, cash back website, anywhere where you have to enter your details. And how do I know this, because Populus are one of my clients and purchase data from my company on a regular basis.

Don't want these telemarketing or survey calls, this practice of randomly dialing numbers should be illegal.

had a call from this number - young woman said it was Populus - doing market research.  I'm ex-directory so how did they get my number?

This is not the only number that we are being plagued with, I have over forty numbers that I log down every time these people phone me. International numbers by trhe score. You would think there would be a way of blocking unwanted calls with modern day technology

Called from this no today 7/7 at1500 t Identified themselves as Populus Market Research  Said TPS did not apply to them and got my number by random dialling.Suggest  anyone hassled by this caller use the link below to the e-petition to the goverment to criminalise cold calls -- I have   and I have pasted it into an email sent to all my contacts asking them to subscribe to the petition and to forward the email and link to all their contacts.   If we all did this it could well go viral before the end date of the petition. Below is the email I sent

Their constant calling was hampering my recovery from serious illness.
I rang the landline number as suggested (0191-265-0525) and spoke to the Centre Manager (nice lady)
She suggested the calls may have been for my husband's previous business, and promised to get them stopped straight away.
I do hope so!

Had a call today.  Had a couple of calls from Populous on this number last November.  OK, Populous are perhaps NOT as bad as some of the Scammers, PPI and loft insulation touts and the many other categories who operate outside the law in flagrant violation of the rules. Perahps the operators of this web site could actively promote awareness of the petition referred to by Beakysteven. The time is right? Local radio have been discussing the issue of junk mail and phone calls.
 I have records on my system that show that over 95% of unsolicited calls to my phone are JUNK calls of one form or another.  I now ignore all calls that are not on my list of accepted callers.

They rang me today. I have now contacted them via the website and told them that I am ex directory and on the TPS list and not to call again. I also warned them that any future calls will be invoiced for time wasted at £30 a call.

This is a legit company who do market research. They will NEVER sell your details on or ask you to buy stuff. It's usually to do with the economy or politics but even can range from about your pets to your music tastes. I'm a member on their site which "pays" for surveys. Once you reach 50 points they send you a cheque for £50 which isn't bad.

Just had a call at 2101. As with everyone else, market research but only when wife rang back to check. They left a silent (office noise only) message and rang off.

Silent call 2nd one today from same number

There is a way of blocking  calls . but its not a free service.
