08458630287 - have called my signed up 3 days ago o2 phone bought from car phone warehouse 6 times so far. oh what fun!
The car phone warehouse store i signed up with told me to beware and its a scam. I would like to make a note here that maybe Car Phone Warehouse may not have protected me here and when I signed up I was not made aware that maybe they were passing my number onto these sort of people. O2 should really sort this mess out as you have to ask yourself how the hell do scammers get hold of a fresh mobile number 1 day after its issued - anyway thats my rant.... heres some more.....I was called by steve- well thats the name he likes to use when hes being super sneeky. 3 times today i heard from steve. Steves not too smart and wanted my bank details for a cheaper insurance. Steve called my number again after i told him i wasn't interested 20 mins later - i reminded him he had called me already and maybe if he could put me onto his manager I could be removed from the list hes working from as to be honest steve - i dont want to give you my money so you can drink warm cider in the carpark. Steve said sure ill put you through to my manager and then hung up.
Steve may call me tomorrow once hes calmed down. Anyway I called O2 and told them about the call gave them the 08458630287 number and the fraud team maybe headed by Steve will look into it. how insane that O2 cant get it together and sort out this problem - this has been happeneing since nov 07!
So my view is Its a scam and steve is a tool

had 2 calls today after reading all the post here I rang o2 from my mobile 202 to ask about this number calling me 08458630287 they said that o2 would not be calling me for any reason as I'm not ready for upgrades or insurance as Im half way into my contract. She advised me to ANSWER the call and if they asked you for personal details hang up. Ring back o2 and they will investigate it. Also o2 do not use answer messages when you ring you will always be able to speak to someone after being put on hold so it can't be o2 my advise is do the same as me and complain get it logged if you still get calls from this number answer it hang up and ring o2 they will take it seriously ..... Hope this helps!!

Ditto everyone else; new contract with 02 and numerous phone calls. I am a little unsure of who to believe...is it or is it not a scam, that is the question!

I phoned o2 customer services (and didnt speak to Jennifer, who everyone seems to have emails from!) and was told to ask for a number to call them back on and a name (whether company or personal). My little o2 lady couldnt find it on the system but said it didnt necessarily mean it was a scam.  She said once I had a number to call them back on (which apparently everyone working for o2 has to have) and a name then to phone customer services and they can check it out.  Either way, I think o2 should be aware and telling their customers about this number. An angry letter is going to the head of customer services and the specialist o2 contract shop I bought it from (who never warned me either way).

They are due to phone back tomorrow (after my battery ran out today and i thought it was legit so said phone back) so I will put the plan into action and see the result.

I was phoned again (as promised) and I did as advised by o2 customer services. 08458630287 were more than happy to give a name and extension number. I phoned o2 customer services to check if it was legit and IT IS.  She didnt need any of the details I had been given by 0858630287 because it was a logged call from o2. She could tell me who it was and what time.

I had a little (ok quite big!) rant to her manager about the fear of scams and that o2 should warn people they are to recieve a call from this number so there is no unecessary worry for us.

She was very helpful and agreed it was a good idea that I (and everyone else) write to customer services and the store it was bought from to complain as it is obviously disconcerting for customers.

The end line is: IT IS A LEGIT O2 NUMBER AND THEY ARE PHONING TO WELCOME YOU IF YOU ARE A NEW CUSTOMER AND IF YOU ARE EXISTING THEN IT IS TO CHECK OVER YOUR CONTRACT (IT MAY HAVE BEEN YOU JUST RECEIVED AN UPGRADE/DUE FOR ONE)

IF YOU WISH TO ANSWER THEN DO SO BUT IF NOT THEN IGNORE THEM AND PHONE O2 CUSTOMER SERVICES TO STOP THE PHONE CALLS.

Maybe if enough of us complain to O2 rather than getting worried and asuming it is a scam then O2 can start a policy of telling customers they may receive a phone call from the above number and not to worry.

Good luck everyone I hope this helps some of you.

This explains what is going on, since back in 2005!

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/20/cpw_phone_insurance/

I was foolish and gave out my details.  They had my name and some other bits.  It is followed within a day by a call from 01792 number hassling you to take out insurance.  Which I didn't do.  That O2 website posting is what convinced me to answer the call in the first place.. but it is certainly bogus.  Congratulations to the scammers there, O2 should be ashamed at leaving that up.

I rang O2 PROPER and they checked it out and came back saying it sounded right, but that it was not on their system.  I think they just rang it, which is a load of rubbish.  O2 sort it out!  Carphone Warehouse / e2save you need to address this properly especially as it has been going on for years.

Don't give out any details.  They are SCAMMERS.

The scammer types are clearly writing on this site.

If you want to speak to O2, ring them.

If someone asks for details, tell them no.

    End of.

This number keeps calling me every single day but I only answer 0845 calls from peope I know are going to call me. If it's THAT urgent, they would leave a voicemail message. Why don't they just give up?!?!?!?!?! It's not getting them anywhere.....

FWIW I just got a call from this number -- I've just requested a PAC code from O2 to terminate my contract.  The woman asked me for name, address etc, but not knowing who it was, I told her that she needed to prove who she was first.  She said that she had no way of doing that other than sending me a short questionnaire, so I said "OK, do that then".  Then she said that it would be pointless because those questions relate to this call!  Confused, I ended the call shortly afterwards (politely, of course).

After reading this and other forums I'm fairly sure it was either O2 or a company to whom they've given my details.  But they really should know better!  It's common sense that the onus is on the *caller* to prove who they are.

I got a call from this number but i always miss it and then they never leave a voice message. Well my contract is about to end so i'm thinking it could be O2 phoning me about a new upgrade, but i'm always at work when they call which is so annoying! I might call O2 and see what they say. Glad i've found this site cos they've been calling me since Tuesday and i haven't been able to take the call.
    • Caller: O2 perhaps?

O2 have confirmed to me that this number is a marketing call from them (see email text below).  I suspect, given the comments in this forum, they use another firm to carry out the dirty deed, hence the lack of details, and perhaps that firm would go on to use your information for its other clients, too.

But a few things: First, never ever give anyone who rings you any of your private details.  If O2 (or your bank or whomever) really needs to speak to you, you can say you'll ring them back, then phone on their genuine publicised customer service line, and they should have a note on their system as to why they needed to reach you.  That's the only way to be certain you're speaking to someone genuine.

Second, these 0845 630287 calls clearly must have a 'machine' dial you automatically, which is why it's so regular, and when you answer it will put you through to a call centre person but if they're all busy, you'll only hear silence.

Third, you should always register your home and mobile numbers at TPS (takes just a minute online), then unwanted marketers are not allowed to ring you & if they do, you can complain to the Information Commissioner, who oversees the Data Protection Act.  http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/ctps/number_type.html

I'm a new O2 customer and made it very clear throughout the transaction to the O2 salesperson that I wanted my number to be free of any directories and marketing and not passed to third parties. I followed that up with an e-mail to O2 customer service.  Today, after reading this forum when I saw a missed call from that number, I e-mailed O2 and said I wanted written confirmation that they'd not use my details in this way, that if O2 had to contact me they should only do so via post or e-mail, and that if anyone other than the few people who have my new number ring me, I'll know they've failed to honour this agreement and I'll complain to the Information Commissioner. I also expressed concern about that 0845 number. They sent a decent enough and quick response, including the following:-

"Thanks for emailing us and I'm sorry if you've received marketing calls from us.  I've checked your account....I've now cancelled this service and you won't receive marketing calls from us in future. Please note that this may take up to 5 working days to complete. Please note that calls from 08458 630 287 are genuine calls from us."
