Ok, just went on the O2 website, which has some FAQs about 'nuisance calls'. Refer to Para 3 which actually quotes the 0845... number as being GENUINE O2:-

What to do if you receive calls from companies pretending to be O2

If you've been contacted by another organisation claiming to be O2 and they attempt to upgrade your phone, sell you insurance or take your bank details, please let us know. Some of these companies may sign you up to something you weren't expecting.

We've already taken legal action against companies who have led customers to believe they are calling from O2. Two of these companies were trying to sell mobile phone insurance.

    Our advice is:

       * We only ever discuss our own range of insurance, O2 Insure, which you can find at o2.co.uk/insurance. Our insurance Administrator is "Marsh Ltd".

       * If you receive a call from a company claiming to be working with O2, do not give out personal information. Try to note down as much information from the conversation as you can and let us know by calling our customer services number on your bill. Your call may help us identify who they are so we can take action against them.

       * You may receive a 'welcome call' from us soon after connecting which may include details of our own range of insurance products. You can tell it's us because the number shown on your phone will be 0845 863 0287. If you call us back on this number there is a recorded message to give you confidence it is O2.

       * If you feel you've already been mislead into taking insurance you should take this up with the insurance company and ask for their cancellation and complaints policy. You may also want to contact Ofcom or the Financial Services Authority to report the practice of mis-selling and breach of distance selling regulations.

You can check out the O2 site at this URL where you will see that O2 quotes the 0845 863 0287 number as their own...
    http://www.o2.co.uk/support/generalhelp/howdo ... sancephonecalls
Look toward the bottom of the page where it says "Our advice is" to find the reference.
Perhaps O2 should change their methodology in view of all these concerns thein new customers have!

Had calls from this number about 2-3 times a day for the last week. Recently renewed my contract with o2. I answered this morning & the guy asked to speak to the contract holder then if there was a password on the account! I asked who it was calling me & he said O2. Seems a bit dodgy as I have no real proof who I was speaking to. No idea whether it was a real call but told them not to ring me again, especially on a Saturday morning!

I just had this number call me a few times over the past few days.

They claimed to be from O2 and asked me for my password. I told them that the password thing only works if I call them, as they could be anyone.

Better safe than sorry, although I did wonder whether I should have given them an incorrect password to see if they knew whether it was incorrect or not...

This is not from o2 as I have just spoken to them and they said that if they were to have called me then it would be logged on their system. This is a SCAM and do not give out ANY personal details to the people on the phone.
Try to ignore the calls or ask them not to contact you again.

Asking to confirm my security details such as password and secret question. I told them they are idiot if they expect me to give them those details and hangup. No more calls.
They are from O2 actually, as they hold some information such as which secret question you chose but better safe than sorry.

Why are there conflicting answers every other post on this subject. One says its definately o2, the next says is definately not o2!

Either O2 haven't got a clue who calls on their behalf (which doesnt surprise me as two weeks into a contract they seem to be a bunch of amateurs) or the helpful folk on here are talking out of their [***].

Either way if an 0845 number calls you, do what i'm going to do and hang up on them.

I had a missed call from this number earlier, I'm on a sim only deal with o2 and have been for a long time so I guess it's not just new contracts with o2. I won't be pleased if they start calling all the time as I changed my number because I had problems before and this time have only given my number out to family and friends. If they call again I will be calling o2 to get them to block the number!

Hi there the number above is from  o2's outbound department... they do many things like welcome you to network, see how things are going, and also call at the end to see if you fancy upgrading your mobile phone... You people are to suspicious... Maybe if you answered the phone you would understand what they are calling for... But you may have just missed out on the best deal from them because they always allow you to upgrade early and get the better deal... Saved £15 a month when they called and got to upgrade 6 months early... Kept same number same acccount and everything

ps would just like to answer some of the problems people have highlighted on here... After speaking the o2 agent i asked them why it was so quiet or why the line dropped after so long they replied that the dialer that they use is computor based and there is a slight lag in the system this means that when the call is answered it can take upto 5 second for the agent to answer. Also asked why the ask for the security password and they said that it was the only way to confirm that they are speaking to the account holder/person able to speak on the account holders behalf... (its not the online password its the security question and answer set on the account by you) if unsure ask them to ask you some other questions rather than get TIT on with them, there only doing there job.

I had a missed call from this number the other week but didn't answer. I did today and it was a bloke from o2 just saying I'd opted out of marketing calls/texts and was that still the case? I said yes and he said ok and thanked me for my time.
No personal details asked for, no selling me anything, no scam.

Read some info in the O2 forum, and apparently this is the sales number for O2.
According to some people they always call you from this number when you first get a contract with O2, but apparently the welcome call quickly becomes a marketing call as soon as you say you're happy with the service and they proceed to try to sell you stuff.

I personally blocked this number, and would advise anyone to never give security details to unsolicited callers.

Keep getting calls from 0845 863 0287 and surprise, surprise have just upgraded my contract and mobile with 02 and Carphone Warehouse.  I never call back now as it is just beyond a joke.  It must be a sneaky way of making money as return calls are so expensive!

Had a call from this number today, while at hospital. No-one knows the number yet, except immediate family, 02 and carphone warehouse. I declined insurance at CW.
I accidentally answered, then immediately turned the phone off. Seems like I did the right thing.
