For the past week, this number has been calling me 3-4 times a day.  The first couple of times I answered no one was there, just silence.  It bugged me so much I called to check the number and got some anwser phone message saying o2 called but an operator was unavailable to talk.  I phoned o2 and they had no idea and still the calls kept coming, only I wasn't answering, but it was still annoying.  I then found this site yesterday and following advice in earlier posts asked o2 to set my account so I wouldn't receive marketing calls - unfortunatley the guy wasn't sure how to do this, so asked another member of staff. So no surprise today when I get calls from this number again.  I answered the first one because I couldn't beleive it and there was actually someone at the end of the line.  The guy said he was from o2 and was just checking my contact details were up to date and could I give him my full address and contact number - but wanted me to tell him what it was; so I asked him to tell me what he had down and I'd verify if it was correct.  No surprise he couldn't do this!  So I said no and please don't call again.  Although when I told him about all the hang up calls he did say it was their automated dialler and he was sorry. Regardless I wasn't giving out any info.
Then I get another call just 10 minutes ago. She wanted my full address and password in order to give me information on the latest promotions which I could pick and choose.  I said I wouldn't as not only had I requested to come off the marketing list but I was uncomfortable giving out info to someone I was unsure was even o2.  She said they were a new department within o2 and that not o2 departments were aware of them.  But that if I did feel that way I should call o2 customer services and she'd put a note to that effect on the system.
Well I did phone o2 again and got someone who knew what they were on about.  He said if o2 did call they'd only ask for your name and for to confirm the first line of your address - no passwords!!!  Also I asked him about the number and he said that's not an o2 number. He has now taken me off the marketing list for third parties, so hopefully the calls should stop.  Will post again to confirm if it has tomorrow. Also no note on the system - no surprise really!
    So basically beware!!!

I posted on page 5 about this (twice!). Despite being removed from the marketing list, obviously now this company has my number and has not been informed not to call it - I have had calls yesterday and today! It's REALLY ANNOYING ME! Is there some top bod at O2 we can BOMBARD with complaints rather than dealing with poor call centre people who are obviously all being told different stuff about whether this number is legitimate or not?

you have to give any marketing calls up to 30 days to stop as this is how often TPS updates its registers you should all visit this site and enroll on the telephone preference service in order to help cut down marketing calls and if in doubt give nothing out!

i have just spoke with O2 who confirm that this is DEFINITELY one of their numbers.

i think they were phonejacked by these scammers you talk of, i would hate to call you all liars but this is definitely a number owned, maintained and run by O2.

first day of my new contract and i have had a missed call off these people already. best thing to do is just like laura did because it keeps one of their lines busy and that is costing them MONEY. a good thing to do is after you answer get them to hang on while you finish doing something and just leave the phone and go back every 20-30 seconds and say i wont be long.they say [***] rolls down hill but its time to start giving it back

I have started getting calls from this number. I haven't answered any of them as I have been at work. I am confused as to how o2 can say they don't know anything about the number and then that it is an o2 number?! either way i definitely won't be answering a call from that number now!

The link below is from the O2 forum, in which they actually admit that they are making these unsolicited calls.  So why can the law not stop them?

They can still call you if your number is registered with the TPS. My phone number has been on it for well over a year and they've been calling me already. My number hasn't even moved onto O2 yet, it's still on Vodafone.

I've been getting the calls too and I got them before my number even got switched to O2. I answered and they asked for my password and stuff which i didn't have yet so they said there'd call back. I called O2 and they said it wasn't them and to ignore the calls. I had them call back today and they said thered call back again at which point im gonna have a rant which should be fun.

In regards to that post on the O2 forum that could be a fake from the company making the calls it wouldnt be hard from them to be a registered user pretending to have the same problem and then posting an email they made up themselves. Think about it, if the internet if full of people saying your fake there gonna try and change peoples opinions.

I had a similar problem, 6 calls in 4 days start9ing the day after I started my contract. I didn't give out any details but spoke to O2. I informed that the calls were getting quite irritating and that it sounded a bit dodgy that the first caller was giving a welcome call from the retentions team (2nd day of new contract) and the second person I spoke to said they were from out of hours (O2 CS don't have an out of hours, perhaps in a different department, but not customer services).

I asked if, perhaps, I did not click the appropriate box for not recieving marketing call. I was put on hold and then told that she has spoken to the manager and have taken me off the marketing list.

    Hopefully that will work
