why couldn't they just disable the phone #s that are being used for these scams? If they get a threshold # of reports of a scam, they look into it and cut them off if they meet established criterium.

Keep getting calls but keep missing them. I think ill answer the phone in japanese when i do get them, should throw them off quite a bit. I try calling back its always busy. Which i knew farsi, could really have some fun.

I get phone calls repeatedly from this number, I am so sick of it!!!!  I told them to take my number off their call list, but still it remains..................................

Same thing as described , oviously from India or Pakistan , trying to steal your identity by saying they are helping you with virus '\s or some similar reason.  i get sometines 2 or 3 calls a week . the phone number changes periodically or is blocked.  SCAM!!!!

I got such a call yesterday and started doing what the guy at the other end asked me to do, at one point I became uncomfortable and told him so. He didn't insist but I'm not not certain if I went along too long and gave him access to my computer.
He introduced himself as a Microsoft employee, said that their server had been receiving signals form my computer that indicated I had serious viruses, then he started telling to press the Microsoft button on my computer and the exercise started. I ended on a site called ammyy.com . He tried to get me to download a free software, then was asking me to verify some numbers. Essentialy at this point, I think he had gained access to my computer.The telephone he was calling from was 1-206-456-0661. I have been trying to reach them all morning and it's always busy.

The call came from an "unassigned" number on my caller ID.  A guy in a very thick Indian accent told me he was John calling from a company who supports Microsoft and they have been getting "dangerous messages from my computer for quite some time" and he asked if I was in front of my computer so he could help.   When I told him my computer was running fine and I have a virus program, he started to argue.  I said NO THANKS and hung up.

They called me claiming that my computer was infected with a virus and that it contacted them to have them fix it.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Some fraudsters have instructed victims to fax a statement agreeing to pay a certain amount, on a specific date, via a pre-paid Visa card. The statement further declares the victim will never dispute the debt.

If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller’s instructions. Rather, you should:

■Notify your banking institutions.
■Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
■Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger.
■File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

■Never give your Social Security number—or personal information of any kind—over the telephone or online unless you initiate the contact.
■Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information. The e-mail may include upsetting or exciting but false statements to get you to react immediately.
■Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that request personal information.
■Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.
■Check your bank, credit, and debit card statements regularly to make sure that there are no unauthorized transactions. If anything looks suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
■When you contact companies, use numbers provided on the back of cards or statements

I've gotten calls before, but this takes the cake.  The hard to understand guy, identified himself as someone at a hospital.  Then asked how old I was, then asked if I knew anything about SEX!  Unbelieveble.  He was obviously a phone solicitor!  And he's using his job at prank calls??  How can they get away with it?  Makes me cranky!

Had this number call 3 times today, and another 5 times this week. Says it's Microsoft calling because my Windows computer is communicating with them to tell them that I have a number of viruses and that they could assist me with cleaning the computer. My answer was "That's pretty funny that Microsoft would be a getting message from Windows when I use a Mac!' His reply was "Sir, Mac's run Windows also" to which I replied "My degree in computer science says your wrong" then click...

I'm in Vancouver, BC Canada and have just setup Selective Call Blocking with Shaw Home Phone so that if they try to call again, they'll hear a recording telling them that I do not want to speak with them and my phone will never ring, until they change the number they're calling from of course. Good thing I can block up to 30 numbers.

They called 30min ago 15:15 Tasmania Summer Time on my mobile. No one said anything they just hung up.

Just had a call from this number puporting to be from microsoft saying they had received reports from my computers saying that I had downloaded malicious software that was going to take control of my PC (funny that my paid for, updates everyday, anti-virus software didn't twig about this). I questioned him about loads of things as It smelt wrong from the start. Im in the UK so they are spreading their web wide. Some gullible people will be taken in. I got a number to call them back 02071935532, which also appears as a nunmber on this website for the same scam!

Got a call this morning around 09h30. Its a long distance call..
The guy on the line tells me i have a virus in my computer and that i am not aware of it.
Surprisingly he did not mention how he was and from what company he worked for.
Sure!!
I hung up.

They are at it again. I just received a similar call from the 206-456-0661 number. I am located in Canada.

Background noise from a call center. Accent. Told me he was calling about malware on my computer that there site was reporting. I asked him how he knew and he went into the pitch blah, blah, blah...

I told him it was BS and he backed down and hung up right away.

Answered an "unkown number"this a.m. in Saskatchewan, and experienced what everyone  here is talking about. It is now afternoon, and this time  the 206-456-0661 number called. I let the answering machine handle it.....

they called me asked to speak to Mrs.X, I told them she was not hear, they asked me who they were speaking to. I told him why dont you tell me who you are! He said, remember, you called me about your computer problems.  I hung up on him.

This number has showed up on my phone every afternoon all week. Today I was home when it came through. It was apparent it was some kind of call centre. After my second "hello", the person spoke however, I couldn't make out what she said. I asked her to repeat it and she hung up. I redialed the number and it rang busy.

This morning at 9:48 I received a call from 206-456-0661.  The man on the other end had a middle-eastern accent and said that he was calling about the problem with my computer, then proceeded to tell me that he was going to walk me through the process to repair the problem.

I told that I didn't have a problem with my computer and that HE was the problem.  Then I hung up.

Yes we get them all the time and finally said we don't have a computer and this seemed to slow them down until today. What bothers me is how pervasive this particular scam is...I don' t believe this is just a few people trying to make some easy money...this has to be big as in funding a terrorist type organization or keeping some government nuclear program alive. It is just too huge.

A man with a heavy Indian accent called, telling me that they were responding to an error with my computer and trying to get me to fix it. I knew he was a scammer right away, and I called him on it. When I told him I hadn't received any errors, he said that he showed I did, so I asked him if he knew what kind of computer I had. He said "Windows Microsoft". Ehhh! Wrong! I have a Mac. I told him that he needed to take me off that list before I called the cops. I said it twice and he hung up.
