For me the number was legitimate (I called the Chase number on the back of my card and they had a record of the earlier call).

The the woman who called wasn't very competent (maybe that should be a clue that it *was* legit - fraudsters are probably more clever), and I'm always suspicious when someone calls you and then asks for "verifying info", and then giving me an unknown callback # instead of telling me to call the number on the back of my card.  No way was I going to call it, especially after seeing this page.

For a company that seems to be so aggressive about fraud (they are constantly locking my account due to "suspicious activity"), they sure don't do a very good job training their customers to avoid social engineering scams by structuring their calls like this.

800-955-9060 does appear to be the direct number for Chase's fraud dept.  I got a phone message today asking me to call them.  I called the number on my card instead, and they said they had called me, and transferred me to the fraud department.  The person I spoke to confirmed it was the direct number for their department.  (They had questions about various charges I'd made today--all legitimate.)

I got the call today. Looks like I sponsered a nice Christmas for somebody to the tune of over 3k.

This was my amazon.com Chase card as well. Odd thing is I have not used the card in at least 1.5 years and it has been locked in my safe for the same amount of time or more. Chase or Amazon must have ben hacked long ago and they just got around to using it now.

I received a call from this number (800-955-9060)and I was suspicious so I called Chase using the phone number on the back of my card instead.  The call from 800-955-9060 ended up being legitimate.  Chase detected fraudulent activity on my account and issued a new Credit Card as a replacement.

1-800-955-9060 is a scam. My experience was similar to Tom's, except they were calling about a Continental MasterCard - I got a message asking me to call that number and have my credit card handy when I did. I looked up the number before I called, thinking it might be a scam, especially since the account they were calling about was closed so activity should not have been possible on the account. I found this thread confirming my suspicions, so I called what I knew to be a legitimate Customer Service number for the account, and they confirmed there was no activity on the card.

1-800-955-9060 is not a scam. I received the VM when I was away from my desk, and then called the # on the back of my card. After I inputted my cc#, I was directly transferred by the phone system to their fraud department. There was a block placed due to a supposedly suspicious transaction I made. Funny that they (Sony card) had a problem with me buying from SonyStyle. All is well after I called.

Not a scam, but if you're wary, just call the # on the back of the card. CC companies should really change their procedures. They should initiate a recorded message to tell you which card and to call the # on the back of it and leave a number. Why would anyone give their account # to someone who calls and claims they're from the CC company, even if it IS true.

It is a scam!! I have received a phone call earlier but it was suspicious so I call the number on back of the credit card and noticed that no one called from the credit card company. Be careful!!

I was as suspicious as anyone else on this site about a call from a strange area code with a message that there was suspicious activity on my credit card. But after researching the matter, I discovered that 800 955-8060 is *not* a scam. It's connected to a legitimate fraud detection department at Chase.

To reply to "tiff"'s and "noble"'s points: while it's true that it would be nice if the greeting at 800 955-8060 specified something direct such as "You've reached the Chase Visa Fraud Detection Department," the fact that it doesn't *does not mean* it's not Chase. If you call the customer service number on the back of your Chase card, the representative will tell you that 800 955-8060 is assuredly a Chase number.

To respond to "kc"'s point: even if there isn't actually any illegal activity happening on your account, that doesn't mean the call is a scam. Credit card companies often call their clients when they see activity that's *suspicious*--but what looks *suspicious* to them is often just repeated failed card swipes at gas pump (for example).

Finally, to respond to "Almost Scammed"'s point: it shouldn't have to be said, but here goes: a "thick accent" (your words), doesn't make someone a thief/bad person/terrorist. Surely you're aware that U.S. companies outsource a great deal of their customer service operations to countries where labor is cheaper; and surely you're aware that in said countries (e.g. India), English is not the primary language. I'm going to assume you accept these two premises; in which case, why would it surprise you that a customer service employee might have an accent? It shouldn't, so stop being a xenophobic rube.

    Smarter than you
800-955-9060 is a valid Chase number. Just to let you non believers know, there are more than 2 customer svc reps at Chase, it's possible they don't know all the numbers. And so what if they have an accent when you talk to them, Chase is a very diverse company.  Next time you get that call, hey, be smart and don't call your credit card company back, bet you will get declined at your next transaction because your card is probably locked. But don't blame Chase because they tried to contact you.  You're so smart.

This is a valid number: 1 800 955 9060. I got a call from them, but  I called the number on the back of my card and it was really Chase.

we got a call from this number and instead, called the number on our chase card. we immediately found out that it was a true call from chase to report that there was unauthorized use of our card.

I would say not a scam, I got a call I did not recognize saying they were Chase Fraud Dept, the number was 224-222-5000 on my caller ID.  I was suspicious and said I wanted a call back number before I would verify anything. They provided me 800-955-9060.  I googled the number and got this site.  I called the number on my card, not the number I was provided with their call, and Chase had in fact suspended my card for suspicious activity.  They had record of the previous call.  Moral of the story, call the number on your card, and never give info without yourself initiating contact.  Be polite.  This is legit, but often they are not.  Chase was doing their job.

this is not a scam.. first 18009559060 is not an outbound dept.. representatives don't give calls to card members.. card member who were calling were only adviced to call back this no.. if they're not sure about a certain transaction that was verified to them.. but it only depends on card members if they're not comfortable calling the no. then they have the no. at the back of the card why not call it instead..

I found this to be legit.  I called the number on the back of my card and they verified that there was a security hold on my account and were able to take care of it.

    My Advice:

Just to be safe, go through the phone number on the back of your card.  They can always help and won't be a scam.

    report it
I know it is a scam, because I recieved a pretexting call earlier in the day from 407-771-0978.I reported all the details of the 1st call to the federal Trade Commission 1-877-382-4357 to be investigated.I hope they put a stop to these annoying low lifes,I think perhaps they have also posted here!!!
NEVER give ANY info. to someone who calls you on the phone.Go to the chase website to get the REAL numbers to call or use the ones on the back of your card.If the company is calling you make them verify your info. instead of the other way around.

Got called by this #...800-454-9078... It is semi legit as it is Chase, but when I called the back of card they had no clue to why i was called!
Whats going on here? I was told that I could have been dialed by a random dialer that uses over 100,000 different legit #'s in order to scam me.
I cancelled my card and had a new one issued.

The number I got from the voice message left by the Fraud Prevention agent was 1-800-955-9069. I called this number, but reached a short recorded message talking about 1-800-482-TALK and it went disconnected. I then called the number on the back of my CHASE VISA, 1-800-945-2000. The lady who answered my call said that it was really from them and she was glad that a cardholder was being extra careful about this.  (If the Fraud Prevention just asks cardholders to call the number on the back of their card, would that be easier and safter?)
