Just got a call from this #, didn't leave any company information, called from a fake phone number. Called a pre-paid cellphone, I do not have any bank of america atm cards. If this is Bank of America, my bank of america accounts will be dissolved over it.

What part of calling from fake numbers, not leaving any legitimate information, is suppose to make me feel good about them looking out for me? Gee that makes sense.

Just received what looks like a fake email from Bank of America with 1.877.833.5617 as a callback number. The add suggests that you check online to see if this alert is listed in your B of A alerts box. That is probably just a disarming tactic to set people at ease and trust that no scammer would actually suggest that.

If you receive email like this, go to Bank of America website directly, call the number listed there, and never trust emails like this.

I recieved a call from 315-724-4022 after attempting to make a large purchase online with my debit card.  It claimed to be BoA's fraud prevention department.  I didn't give them any of the information they asked for and spoke with a person on their line.  He gave me this number 877-833-5617 as a direct line to BoA's fraud department where he said he was working.  I looked the number up on this site and saw that it was no good.  I called BoA's credit card customer service because they are open 24/7 and the lady there told me that if there was a fraud alert on my card, at most they would call me and have me call them back.  She said it wasn't them.

They are still at it.  I just got a similar email claiming to be Bank of America, saying there was "Irregular Check Card activity" on my account and listing the number 1.877.833.5617 It must be fake because I have accounts or bank cards from Bank of America. I forwarded the email to the B of A fraud department. Keep on fighting scams and phishing everyone!

People... rather than get confused easily... read through this again.  Is it BANK OF AMERICA or CHASE???????

Clearly, this is SCAM PHISHING.  Since it is pretending to be both Chase and BoA.  Come on people.  Let's think.  And also, what's the rule?  Never call the numbers in email and never click links in email!!!  Always go directly to your verified bookmarked site from your browser or type the verified website address in yourself.  Come on people.  Crooks are on here too your know trying to confuse you.  Is this CHASE or BOA or some other bank?  It can't be all right?  Clearly PHISHING !!!

Whether this is legit or not should not even be the primary concern.  The primary concern is whether something real happened to your account or not and the only way to verify it is by

GOING DIRECTLY TO YOUR BANK WEBSITE YOURSELF EITHER BY YOUR TRUSTED BOOKMARK OR TYPING IT IN.

AND CALLING NUMBER SEEN ON THE WEBSITE OR THE BACK OF YOUR CARDS!!!

Not clicking links in email or calling numbers in email.

And nobody working at the bank needs to know your SS#!!!  They can get it all done simply with your phone# verification and your card# verification.

Best yet, go online and go to customer service online chat.

Also, crooks are on here too so use extreme caution when you see one or two IT'S LEGIT argument typed on here.

And this to the crooks:  Uh, is this CHASE or BANK OF AMERICA...???  Uh, well???

Oh, right... it's outbound telemarketing company calling on behalf of CHASE and BOA?  And people are supposed to trust this?  Come on crooked [***]!!!

WOW - a lot of paranoid people. Then again, you have a right to be suspicious of "alerts" such as these.

I just received the BOA email, it referenced my wife's card#. I called, and they asked first for my SS# - I said "no, but here is my checking account number which the check cards are linked to" - I recited from memory our account number. I was looking at my account online and saw two charges from an Orlando Mall (Dept Store)... totaling $700 or so. I asked if it was "two charges from xyz*25 which triggered the alert" and the woman said yes, and asked if those were valid purchases. I replied "yes", as I had already contacted my wife regarding them. When she stated the exact amounts which I was looking at online, that was good enough for me!

    THIS # IS LEGIT !!!

I looked back, and it was the same email I received during a week in Vegas last month (for my card that time), as the charges were "large" and "unusual". I told them "I'M IN VEGAS!", and they got a kick out of that.

It NEVER hurts to be cautious.

    Hi,

I also got a call from this number ( 8778335617)  today.

The caller left a voice mail claiming to be from Bank of America and its regarding the security with my account.

When I called this number, it seems like BOA service but when the machine asked me for my 16 Account number, I did not had it immediately (else I would have fallen for it).

Before calling them again, i checked my account online to see if any money is been transacted, but it was safe. so I felt doubt and searched the internet for this number 8778335617 and reached this forum.

    Thanks all for updating this.

From now on I will ask questions to guys about me and my identity before the ask me anything.

    thanks

I did NOT receive a BofA alert email.  Rather, I got a call from caller ID "UNKNOWN".  I let the call go to voicemail.  The message said, [first part cut off] ...America's ATM/Debit Customer Protection Dept [...] Call 877-833-5617 [...].

I did NOT call the number.  I logged into my BofA account and had no alerts.  I then called the number on the back of my BofA card.  There was no hold or suspicious activity on my account.  Additionally, the CS Agent said they had received a LOT of calls today.

Like so many other folks on here have said, walk in to your bank or call the number on the back of your card (if the card is recent - who knows, there might be expired numbers that other people can grab).

It's not a bogus call, however call the number on the back of your card instead of this number. That is why the number is there. Why take the chance??

I received this same email recently from Bank of America.  I called it and it asked for the last 4 digits of my social security number and my 16 digit debit card number.  It then asked me to verify 3 transactions.

This seems legit.  I logged into my B of A account online, and that email appeared in my alert history.  When I called the number on the back of my card, they verified that 877-833-5617 is a legitimate B of A number.

Also, the "suspicious" activity was my own.  I had tried to withdraw a large sum of money from the ATM earlier that day, and I was denied at the ATM (presumably because it was much more than any amount I had ever tried to withdraw before and I was on vacation).  So I wasn't surprised that I received a fraud alert email.

I just got a message to call this number saying it was for BofA fraud check. Seemed a little fishy off the bat with the myriad of transfers they put me through and the fact that CA was the first option on their list of 'where is your account located'. They were pretty evasive. Not to mention that their call center sounded *very* noisy like a telemarketers location. I could hear people in the background if I concentrated. Pretty obviously not a banking call center.

I got a call asking me to call this number. Instead, I called the number on the back of my ATM card, and the lady at BofA said this was a legit number and transferred me. So it's legit, although they really should do a better job of distinguishing themselves from scammers.

I got the same e-mail today in my junk folder (not surprising, anyone not in my contact book goes straight to my junk mail) but knowing that I had just made 3 purchases on a card I rarely use, I called the number on the e-mail. I got an automated service asking for my 16 digit card number and seeing as I had been through this before about a year ago, I typed it in. When I got a live person, she asked me where my account was opened and then what information I provided to open it. When i said my license, she asked for the number. I told her I'm sorry, I've already provided more information than I'm comfortable with, I'm going to hang up and reconect by calling the number on the back of my card. She completely understood and encourage me to do so, and also gave me a 1800 number that supposedly was BofA's. Needless to say, I called the number on my card, not the 1800 and got patched through to Fraud. They told me they really had sent the e-mail and the purchases I made earlier had seemed suspicious, so there was a hold. After the fraud agent removed it, I asked about the 1800 number (which was really the 1.877.833.5617). The agent didn't even let me finish the number, he gave me the last 5 or so digits and told me it was a direct number to the fraud department, although he couldn't explain why other people in 2008 had problems with it being a scam. In any case, it *is* a legit number, but I still wouldn't trust links on the e-mail, and really even though the number works, it only takes about 1 more minuet to go through the connections and get to the same department by calling the number on the back of your card.

This  is a legit call. You can go in your online banking account and check to see what alerts they have sent you. If you need to feel safe about it, call the number on the back of your card. They will connect you to the fraud dept. It was all automated from then on. They just ask you to verify three charges. I don't know what was so suspicious about my transactions. They were to Alice.com  Skype.com and Newegg.com  I have charged to all three of these several times. I have no idea what set of the suspicious activity alert, but I am glad they're checking.

    The number 1.877.833.5617 is legit.
Here's what people need to understand, the way that phishing scams work is that the thief CLONES a real, existing banking email. The graphics, address, message, logos, and even the phone numbers would look exactly like a legitimate bank email, with exception to the LINKS, which are hidden. It's not BoA's fault. Even if they changed 1.877.833.5617 to a new number, a thief would start copying the new number into their email scams, in the hopes that the user would click on the "log into your account" which would take the user to a fake site in order to steal the information. But if you call the number, BoA will tell you that the alert is illegitimate - NOT the phone number. And still ask you to forward the email to the abuse complaints, of course.
I really had a fraudulent activity in my debit card, someone stole my debit card and went shopping with it, I actually received a phone call from BoA in addition to the email alert and 1.877.833.5617 was the number I had to call. The fraud representative had to read from her screen all my account activity, so that I could tell which ones were made by me and which ones were made by the thief within the previous days. The fraud representavive had all my information on their screen, blocked my card and had me go into a BoA branch to pick up a temporary card. Also they returned all the money that was debited by the thief.
Also, because there are scam alerts going out from phishing sites, the way to be sure if it is legit, as some people described above is to go into your online account and click on History alerts, the same alert email with the same 1.877.833.5617 number will show up as being sent that day. Or as others suggested, call in the 1800 number from the back of the card. (they will probably redirect you to 1.877.833.5617).

This number is Bank of America.  I investigated this.

To verify, log on to online banking
Under the account section, click on alerts
Review alerts history and verify what emails have been sent by showing the details of the email.

    Details of the call
    The questions asked were...
Automated system: Please enter your checkcard number.
Live person: Verify your name, verify the last deposit into your account...
When they asked for my username on my online account I hung up and called the number on the back of my card.

When I logged onto my online account, the exact email and phone number was in my alerts section.  So I have reason to believe this is correct.

Before investigating it I sent an email to:
Re: Bank of America Alert: Irregular Check Card Activity
    From: Abuse <abuse@bankofamerica.com>View Contact

THIS IS SOME FURTHER INFORMATION THAT WAS SENT BACK TO ME:
