- Ms. JonesThere are many messages about how this is a legit email or phone number. So if it is legit why are they sending emails about an account i dont even have. I dont bank with Bank of America! This is a scam.
- Spencer replies to kAs of Feb 2011, this is a legit BofA number. If there has been fraud, they will cancel your card and send a new one, or you can go to a branch for a temp card and the branch will send you a new card. If you do not call and have your card cancelled it gives the fraudsters a chance to come back later for a bigger score.
- Old Man RiggsYes, it is legit... yes it is their BA fraud department, but it is SO WRONG! Like others I get this call even though I do not use BA. I called the number provided (877 833-5617) which is legit not a scam. They say they cannot stop calling me, because apparently somebody else listed my phone number on their BA account and they have no way of knowing who that person is because they cannnot search bank records by phone number... only by account number. They say there is nothing I can do to stop the calls without an account number. The call is automated, so I cannot break in a talk or ask to have my number removed. I am stuck with one or two phone calls a day with no way to stop it. No it is not to my CELL phone, but to my house phone which is on the Do Not Call Registry... but they have the right to call their customers even if I am not their customer, because a customer listed my number (or it got typed incorrectly) on their account. I am TICKED!

- VincentThey called me saying that i need to verify my information because my account was on hold, but I already knew it sounded fishy becasue my account should be fine. So i just listened to see what it asked for and asked for my 16digit account number which i did not give, i hung up. I went on google and put in the number to see if it was a real bank of america number but i saw all of the comments saying it was a scam. Dont be fooled!

- Helen Whitcomb replies to LarryWhat are you smoking, Larry?????? I called my banker and she told me 1-877-833-5617 is a phising scam. I logged onto my BOA account and did NOT find an alert from this fake phone number. Why don't you go to the Bank Of America website, click on 'Contact Us' and go down the list of telephone numbers, and you will NOT find 1-877-833-5617 anywhere. How much are these scammers paying you to lie on this website??????????
- MHS| 1 replyNOT a valid BofA number. I received and email AND a phone call. I called the 1-800 # on the back of my check card and they confirmed there's no alerts on my account and had me forward the email to their fraud department. Just because you call a number and it says they are BofA doesn't mean they are!
- CPLI received the email that's been referenced many times already, used my bookmark to get to the BoA website, went into my alert history and the "Irregular Debit Card Activity" alert from today was there. If you have an account, do that. You'll find an alert and the below when you click on the details.

- JayWake up people. 1.877.833.5617 is a legit BoA number.
Not only did I have an alert as indicated in the e-mail I received, but I confirmed the number when I called the BoA number on the back of my card.
Takes 2 min of research to confirm... - JKok, everybody that's saying 'beware!' and that this is a scam - I appreciate the fact that you're trying to aid people in being cautious.
However, the number you're screaming about is legitimate. Caution is one thing, screaming like Chicken Little on crack is another. If you call the main customer service number and ask for 'Detection' you will eventually get 877-833-5617. It will be read to you in case you get disconnected.
If you *really* want to help the process, pester BofA to place this number somewhere on their website to at least show there's a modicum of legitimacy to it. The fact that they ask you to just accept that number in their emails is in direct contradiction to a reasonable safety policy. The Fraud Detection people were actually telling me they're frustrated that the Customer Service department has thwarted efforts to place this number anywhere on the site.- Caller: Bank of America
- JK replies to MHSThis is completely wrong information. Possibly you were asked to call another number and you misread it OR Bank of American screwed up in telling you there were no alerts on your account. Regardless, this is 100% not correct.
- KateYes, this is legit, BoA do not have the number on their website and to be cautious after receiving an email I called the number on my card, they referred me to the ATM dept using this number as stated above.
- another BofA CustomerThis is a valid number and goes to the BofA Fraud Associates call center. It is safe to call. The number was given to me by a BofA employee during an online chat.
Of course, the number appearing in your caller ID window is meaningless, as that is easily spoofed.- Caller: BofA
- BoA CustomerWe had a hold on a checkcard due to questionable activity (which, by the way, were legit). and the e-mail referenced the number 1-877-833-5617. I was cautious so called the 800 number in my on-line banking. The rep validated the hold and gave me the number to call to have the hold removed. Guess what the number was? You guessed it - 877-833-5617. This is a valid number. No phishing whatsoever. I am thankful for their cautious approach, but I too needed to be cautious as I gave out personal info.

- It's real as of 4/15/11I googled this number and decided to call BoA at the number listed on the back of my card. They said there was a problem with my card and that the number is legit. The customer service rep verified the number and said I had to call them to get the restriction off my card. I asked him if it was a scam and he said no. Just thought I'd post my info.
- Update to it's real as of 4/15/11I just wanted to let you know that they did NOT ask for my social. They verified other security information but I did not have to give my social. I had a problem with my card since I moved out of state and they were concerned about so many charges from another state. They were also able to connect me to BoA customer service. Hope this is helpful. It's probably always good to verify the message with the number on the back of the card before calling.
- SamI believe it is real. I went to my BoA online account, an I DID have an alert. The number is listed there. But it is all kinda fishy. I hope I didn't get phished, but I do believe it is legit.
- Scam ReporterI recevied an automated phone call that showed as "Unknown name, Unkown number" on my caller i.d. the message said it was from Bank of America, Fraud Dept. and I needed to call call 877-833-5617. When I did they said their was fraudulent activity on my Visa debit card and asked me to verify the number on the card. Foolishly, I gave it to them, but when she asked for my drivers license # to verify it was me, I knew something was wrong. I told her I wasn't giving it over the phone and she said they could not "help" me. She then said if I could verify the last deposit made that would be sufficient. I told her I would go to the branch and hung up. I went to the branch and they immediately cancelled my card because IT IS A SCAM. They told me they never ask for a D.L. # and they have my debit card #, so they don't need me to repeat it over the phone. BEWARE!!
