I had a missed call on my cell phone from this number that left a recording on my voice mail saying it was a prepaid call from... (left no name).  After reading the posts here, I contacted my cell phone company because I was concerned about it being a possible scam to use my number to make collect calls. I was told that collect calls cannot be made to or from a cell phone (learn something new everyday!), but they went ahead and blocked the number from all phones in our calling plan.

I got a call from this number and they also said it was from a prison and the person actually knew my first name and the town I was originally from, which scared me, but finally he said he probably called the wrong number. I found that odd how he called the wrong number but yet knew my name and where I was from. I googled the number after the phone call and I found this website.

Do not answer this number...I signed up with a internet company called SMC today and after I signed up I started getting these calls.  It is a scam and don't answer it!!! It will cost you.

I received a call from this # last night and was confused, however two years ago I was taking care of a girl and her 3 year old child and her ex was in jail in Chemung County after a very unpleasant year of dealing with this mans harrassment the girl decided to take her child and go back.I was very afraid this might be the same man.When he would call before it was always a recording but would tell his name asking you to take a collect call and ask you to put in your credit card info. or a phone calling card #.This time they just wanted a credit card but gave no inmate name so I hung up.

A few days ago got several calls from this number. The guy calling from Richmond city jail he states his name is Joesph Hunt. I do not know this person. Today he has called ten times in 3 1/2 hours. The phone gives you the option to block calls from this number but does not work!! Very annoying!!

Got called at 3:13 am. Did not answer. No message. Called back and it asked me to set up an account.

I do know of someone in jail. Damnit if I didn't answer it.

Got a call from this number at 6am in the morning.  The automated voice said it was Mike(which happens to be my brother's name) from some correctional center (I was half asleep so I did not catch the full name of the center).  Hit 9 to reject call because I know no one in prison.  I also did a *60 to block the call.  Now the caller will get a polite message saying I am not taking calls at this time.  I read some of some of the post here and I hope the calls will stop.  I wonder if this is a bill collector.  When we first got our phone number we would get calls from bill collectors daily wanting to talk to the former owner of our phone number.  Occasionally they still call.  As a matter of fact we got a call again for the previous phone number owner saying that his car was going to be reposed.  After trying to explain that the person no longer has this number I finally told them "f" it. Take the car I don't care.   Maybe that will teach the previous owner of my number not to keep giving it out.

Which provider do you have?  Did you have to pay to have them block the number?  It's happening to me over and over and I want it stopped...

It is not a scam, and they can't do anything from this phone number except call you.  The calls are pre-paid, not collect, and you are given two opportunities to accept or decline the call.  This is the only way an inmate has to call you, and you might be surprised who you know that's in jail.  Also, the pre-recorded message tells you who it is so you can decide if you want to accept or reject the call.

I received one initial call to my cell phone from the Franklin County Correctional Facility 2 asking me to accept a collect call from : then a man mumbled his name.  I hung up.  The calls continued repeatedly thru the day, requiring me to hit the hang up button (I estimate about 10 calls from the same number).  At 3:00 and 3:45 AM, this number called me again.  At this point I was officially creeped out.
I had to contact my cell phone carrier (so much for inmates not being allowed to call cell phones) to block 8882889879.  My brother forwarded this site to me which has been a revelation and greatly helpful.  
I especially want to thank "Cop" for the informative and calm information given by him/her.
That being said, there seems to be a need for greater controls with this system because most of us are not friends or family of the inmates calling.  
We are random targets, and are forced to engage in extra time consuming efforts to stop the abuse of our privacy at the hands of inmates abusing the service.

I have been receiving numerous unsolicited calls from this number and want to prevent calls from whatever place or person this is.

All the people reporting these calls from this number are so stupid they don't know whether they know some in jail or not? Appreciate your thoughtfulness and  your experience with these calls but I'm not interested and find it disturbing to receive them at all hours of the day and night. And many many many years ago I worked with inmates in a correctional facility and that they are lost souls looking for family would not be my first calculation as to why these calls are being made.U7V
