This is a sophisticated scam.  The incoming number IS infact a British Gas phone number but the caller isn't from British Gas.
It's a simple yet clever scam.  The caller spoofs the number they are calling from so your caller ID shows the legitimate number, even though they are calling from another number altogether.  Probably not even originating from the UK.  
So, watch out and NEVER give ANY personal details.  If anything, challenge the caller to give you personal details about yourself.  I did and they didn't have my billing reference number, address or direct debit date.

Called again and simply hung up - annoying!

I have around 10 calls from them today starting from 8:30 this morning, all they ever do ishang up on me. Other times i have not answered the phone and they leave a automated voice mail asking for me to ring them. They have no reason to be calling me.I am on a pre-paid meter because of all this trouble before but it just doesn't stop!

Starting to get similar phone calls for an Electricity bill I cleared in full in april... only for them to bill me another £100 on top and the bill arrives yesterday, 6 months after I move!

Have written to British Gas, and will be challenging them if they call.... tos*ers.

This number rang my mobile number today, a few minutes ago, but although I answered quick, the caller never spoke.

get loads of calls from this number, how do i stop it?

Probably after some outstanding bill.
They do not stop, They call sometime 10 times a day.

Silent call from this number  moment ago. I though silent calls were illegal?

I have also receive calls from this number. No message left. Can we report this to BT to get some help? to trace the number origin.

Very strange I have two minimal outstanding bills this number called yesterday claiming to be british gas and told me if i didnt pay in full immediately then i would receive charges of £65 a day as account would be transfered with daily administration charges (made no sense to me)
I called back british gas on their official 0800 number and said i had a slight delay with payment and they said no worries if you can pay by the end of next month then everything is fine.

So very strange more so that this 0161 number calls me again this morning which i didnt pick up.
when i tried to use my phone 5-10 minutes later i couldnt call out so their calling machine must have somehow kept on their line.

If this is british gs then why on earth are they saying the opposite to the official number thats printed on their statements?

This is not British Gas!!! I have just spoken to BG and they confirmed this is a scam, do not give them any details at all. Sounds very convincing, they even have the BG hold music.

CON SCAM BRITISH GAS (hopefully this will be shown when people search google!)

call me 10 times a day!! they would not reply at the other end!! and then the other day i found out it was british gas. im not even wit british gas!!!! i spoke to them yesterday and today and sid stop calling!!! but still they keep calling. i just want them to stop calling.

they rang me 7 times in 2 hours , i am not even with them . i live in china for gods sake and i have lived here 3 years but they still call my uk cell . so i told them they are costing me money to recieve this call ,and the reply i got was "when you pay us the money you owe we will stop" .so i sent 20 joke emails a day  to peter.metcalf@britishgasbusiness.co.uk and 1 saying when he stops calling me i will stop sending emails .They have not called me since.
so you all should try that it might work when he gets a few thousand emails a day hehehe.

Had a call from this number.  When answered there was no one there. After a few seconds, a foreign voice asked my name in a very sinister manner, totally freaked me out.  He said he was confirming my electricity bill. I didn't confirm anything as his manner sounded like something out of a horror film.  If this is someone on behalf of British Gas I am surprised they would employ someone with such a menancing tone.

got a call at 7.30 pm from this number, it was a chinese woman claiming to be british gas demanding my card details for a bill that isn't even overdue. she told me not to pay it on the website and not to ring the proper british gas number, she said she would ring me again tomorrow after i refused to give her my card details.

british gas would not demand things like this from customers, i have never had a call before from british gas demanding money. this number needs to be reported to watchdog, as there will have been loads of people who have been conned out of their money

35 calls in 3 days everytime no one on other end. now phoning my office phone which has never been given how do they get away with this irritating hounding

As a student living in a rented shared house money is rarely readily available when needed the most. Although our gas bill with British Gas is overdue I have personally rung BG to confirm that we will pay our outstanding bill as soon as our student loan is through, which is roughly a weeks time. Although a note was attached to the account confirming when we will pay I am receiving rude calls from a call centre abroad. The man who spoke to me was irate and talking to me as if I were something on the bottom of his shoe.

I find it completely diabolical that I am receiving these calls despite having arrangements made with British Gas themselves. More to the point the Asian call centre were demanding my card details and threatening me with court action and further charges. I will only ever give my details out when I have personally rung the service. I will not be bullied by a call centre.

ive had numerous calls from this number .. yesterday the person i spoke to was very rude ... didnt give there name.. i asked if they were selling anything and they said not really .. i hung up .. this morning i have had 3 missed calls and a 10 minute silent voicemail message left on my mobile .. not nice !

This number tried to call me twice today... good thing I was at work and wasn't able to pick up.  Thanks to the reports on here, I'll know not to bother.

They sent me my final bill via text (not even as a proper paper document!) about three days ago and they're already hassling me for payment?  Especially as this was supposed to have been calculated about two months ago and it's taken them this long... bloody cheek.

This number is doing my head in, they've called me about 3 times aday for the last week. If I answer its always just silence, or if i'm at work and divert it it leaves me exactly 4min long answerphone messages. How can I bar this particular number?
