Just posted a car for sale on Gumtree and within minutes received an SMS on my phone from +61 428 465 117

It reads
"Sent from: stephen
Your vehicle still for sale?what is the lowest price and condition of it,get back to me through my email address (stepfresser@gmail.com)"

I replied via email and received the following email in response...

"Thanks for mailing back,am ok with the price and the condition,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kupe project.We do not have access to phone at the moment,its 15days off and 15days on and that's why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.Regarding the payment,i will be paying you through PayPal,please get back to me with your paypal details so i can process the payment,you can alternatively send your bsb and acct number if you have no PayPal acct.I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up and deliver it to my place in Darwin after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct.
Await your reply"

I did however provide my bank BSB & ACC # and immediately afterwards had a gut feeling that it was a little fishy. I called my bank and explained the situation and was told that the only thing that can be done with that info is deposit money into my account.

I replied to "Stephen" that I would be leaving the ad up until full amount has been cleared. I am yet to hear back from "Stephen".

I wish I had of found this site prior to ANY communication with them.

Looks like the scammer has changed their name to Kathy now. I got a text from +61428465117 within half an hour of posting a car advert on Gumtree, much like everyone else.

Three things bothered me about the message. First, why were they texting from a weird phone number (definitely not a normal UK mobile number), second why didn't they refer to the item by name rather than just call it an advert listing and third why were they asking me to reply via email rather than text when they obviously have access to text? Like others have said, do these people think we are stupid or something? They'll have to do better than that in future. Zero out of ten for a crap scam :O

I have my car listed in car sales and Gumtree and received this text from 0428465117...same number as everyone else....but a new name this time. Seems like it's the same scam...just a different name. I told him I had 3 genuine buyers offering more than the asking price and that I would only take cash....haven't heard back from him.

Yes they are still on it. 61428465117 on an oil rig. What'd to buy my boat. I set up an invoice with paypal however thought twice and checked up. Horrified at the amount of times these people are phishing. Cancelled invoice with paypal. Pains!

I had someone message me from 62161 saying ' I want to know if your vehicle on trademe is still available please email me on westainy@gmail.com.

I emailed to say yes... conversation history below.
I was suspicious from first msgs but after googling their address now definately am and will stay away - good this info is available. As you can see from below msgs story is staying similar but is now calling themself "Lorraine West"







Thanks for the  information, it was really of immense help,i am really interested in buying it and i want to go ahead with the purchase, i am pleased with the price but I can only conclude the transaction through PayPal for our own protection,PayPal act as a neutral third party. it is safe,secure and reliable.

I insisted on PayPal mode of payment because i don't have access to my bank account online  but i can pay from my PayPal account  as i have my bank a/c attached to it and also due to the fact that i am currently offshore and I won't definitely be able to make it to my bank to wires money across to you.It is what safe and convenient for me.

Yep, exact same e-mail from a so called sharonhair001@yahoo.com and the same mobile number, i should have realised by the 1st e-mail that it wasn't via Gumtree but feeling rather happy about selling my guitar I went ahead and replied with my Paypal e-mail address, mobile phone number and home address, i finally caught on by the 2nd return e-mail by the $1100 that was offered for a $450 guitar and $650 for shipping to N.Z.  Beware people this guy isn't a very good scammer but he did take me by a bit of a surprise at first.

Hello, I am in Portugal and we have a number of ads on www.olx.pt with my Dad's phone number as a contact. I just received a text message that according to my phone's caller id is from his phone number but with the following text: "whats the selling price of your furniture, please only email me directly to danieljack18@gmail.com, i'm at work". How is it possible that his sms message looks like it's coming from my Dad's phone number?! This really got me worried.

OK, regarding the above message: it turns out my Dad got it from some unknown number and since he doesn't understand English he forwarded it to me but didn not think to give warning first! Anyway just explained the info I got thanks to this forum and we' ll definitely ignore this sort of message from now on.

I got the marine engineer e-mail saying i am in Bermuda and cannot come for pickup in person so a so called sharonhair@yahoo.com will be using paypal as the most secure way for both parties. The next e-mail told me that she had paid via paypal and I was to go to Western Union branch and deposit $650 for her private pickup agent to collect my item advertised on Gumtree. I replied after checking my pending transactions in my paypal account.
I said, how is the phishing going for you out there on the ship, have you caught anyone yet. The invisible money that you had deducted from your bank account must have something to do with the Bermuda Triangle hey, i've heard that a lot of ships and people just vanish out there so you should let your captain know to be very careful. I then went on to say there is a great phishing club here in Australia that would be very interested in your abilities, they're called phishing@paypal.com.au

Beware of scams to buy products on gumtree. Scammers are the scum of the earth. Tried to get me to pay for his courier pick up of several thousand dollars before the funds were even transferred via pay pal. What a joke. Does he think I am an idiot. When I said NO - arrange it yourself, the emails kept coming to convince me. What a scum bag. The emails have stopped.
