- JuneI received a call from these morons regarding my recently deceased brother, who died less than a month ago. It was with regards to a Sears Citi-line account that he had for which his last payment was made on Aug. 8, 2013 and he deceased on Aug. 15, 2013. The account was not in default or delinquent; yet sears apparently turned this account over to them as they gave me pertinent information such as the balance on the account. They were trying to establish who was the executor of his estate, as I did call Sears after his death to make arrangements on making payments on the account, but Sears would not discuss the account with me as it was not my account, and they also requested a copy of the death certificate. I tried to establish whether there was credit life insurance on the account, but they would not discuss anything with me. Now, today, I receive a call from a collection agency, and mind you, these people have no problem discussing the account with me. Now, why is that? I told them technically, I'm still in no position to discuss the account with them as the estate is in probate, and no one has been named the executor. What's with all this premature action on the part of Sears/Citiline turning this account over to a collection agency. I've notified my attorney on this matter and am awaiting an answer from them.

- Steve replies to AlabamaThank you for the post, I saw the phone number on my phone, no message. But they also called other members in the family, and said they will record the conversation. My family was sacred, almost got fooled. After I saw your post. I notify my family. They finally know it is a scam. Thank you very much for the post.
- TreenaI have been getting calls from this number for some time. This is Asension Point Recovery Services. They are collectors for the debt of deceased persons (apparently among other things). My Mom passed away last July. I called her creditors to let them know she had passed. Shortly after that I started getting calls from two "recovery" companies regarding my Mom's debts. They called repeatedly and often. I got fed up with dealing with them and stopped answering the phone. I sent them a copy of Mom's death certificate, my letter of administration, and a letter explain how and where to file a claim on Mom's estate and gave them the claim period dates. I also stated that I can do nothing until I hold an estate sale and provide an accounting to the Fiduciary Supervisor of my county. Neither of them filed a claim. Instead they tried to keep harassing me. They told me repeatedly that they know I am not responsible for my Mom's debts and then they asked me to pay them. The best suggestion I can make to anyone who is being harassed by this company or others like them is to ignore their calls. After I got fed up with their calls I fired off a couple of nasty letters to them and Ascension Point finally filed a claim. The other one still has not filed, but sent me another form asking for info that I had already given them both in a letter and to one of their reps on the phone.

- Clarity| 6 repliesThis number is not a scam. They are simply looking to speak to a personal representative for the estate, estate attorney or someone in the family who can speak for the estate. If you actually answer the phone and get through the security questions, they will explain. If you don't have the info needed to get through the call, you are probably not the correct party they are looking for and simply need to state so.
Estates go through probate every day and it is a completely legal process. If your loved one's estate is insolvent and cannot pay the outstanding bill, you may be asked if you would like to honor the debt in their name (which is not crazy to people who value their obligations and can pay them) but it is not, nor can ever be demanded of the survivors. There are regulations put in to place that does not allow such practice. If you are the executor or personal rep for an estate, it is then your obligation and responsibility to have a short conversation with a financial institution to resolve an outstanding matter. It doesn't mean you have to pay it, it simply means you need to let them know what is going on. Going through a loss is a tough thing. That is why people hire estate attorneys to handle these types of matters. A bank has nothing to go on other than old phone numbers and possible relatives in order to find out who is speaking on behalf of an estate. That is the reason for the random calls sometimes. It's not a fun thing but it is a fact of life when someone has debt and they pass. Its unfortunately something we all learn when someone we love passes. The callers cannot disclose such sensitive info to just anyone and that is the reason for them being vague when they cannot verify whether or not your are the right party. They are protecting the integrity of your loved ones info just as you would. With estate issues you have relatives that come out of the wood work trying to get involved so there are extra precautions that need to be taken.
Next time, just pick up the phone. If you are not the right party, just let them know. Most of these posts seem to be folks that didn't even talk to anyone. If they would have verified their role as a personal rep for the estate, and verified security info, the whole situation would have made itself clear and the issue would have been understood and resolved. - A West-Central Florida familyReceived a number of calls during January 2014 from 888-806-9073; they left 2 robo messages. Today I picked up the phone & spoke with a woman who was looking for 'the person who's handling the affairs of So-And-So's lately deceased". She never told me the nature of her business with the party. During the conversation I came to find out the "deceased" is a relative of my husband's first wife, from whom he's been divorced from 25+ years. She gave a name & number & my husband returned the call 1 hr later. He was asked first for a 'reference#', and when he requested the name/ext# I was given, he was transferred to some voice mail. It is disturbing if this is not a legitimate business and it is allowed to continue doing business in this manner. I see some posts are 4 years old at this date.

- Jean RobinsonI received a phone call from 888-806-9074 concerning my fathers death. They wanted to know who the person was that handled the financial. Since I have been estranged from that family for 20 years, I didn't know. He wanted to probe further, and when I asked who he represented and he replied that it was Ascension. I asked for more information, as I was concerned that my no load siblings were trying to get me to pay any estate taxes. I also told him that I was an It specialist with the federal government, he couldn't wait to get off the phone. I had my lawyer look into it and found out it wasa scam. I live in Virginia Beach, but my lawyer contacted the El Paso probate office to report it.

- jcUnbelievable. Nothing but ambulance chasers. My father-in-law passed in March and, of course, the calls began. My poor mother-in-law is 91 and this kind of crap stresses her out relentlessly. I called these people today and advised Beverly (who changed her last name as we talked) to NEVER call my mother-in law again, that Dad's money is just fine and she and her company have nothing to do with it. She attempted to imply a debt which, if you knew Dad, NEVER existed. Regardless, they were informed they are crypt crawlers and to lose our phone numbers.

- aud replies to redatlI have told these people over and over that there was no estate. My Mother had Alzheimers and all was spent on her care. I sent death cert. and--copy of zero balance bank statement--they STILL trying to get money. Unfortunately--creditors have up to a year to try to find any money--so--even tho WE are not responsible for any debts--AND--they KNOW there is no money--they will hound you for a year. After that--they can be fined--
- s replies to Claritywow, "Claritie"s [***] rings very true....NOT!
fake-ass name - TracyI'm also dealing with Ascension Point in regard to my deceased Father's Estate. I'm the Executrix. However, they aren't scammers - they're legitimate. When a deceased person has credit card debt, collection agencies take over the accounts, & the succession can not legally be closed until all debt is paid, unless the Estate is proven in court to be insolvent. Unfortunately, if your relative owned a house & a car, & the value of those 2 things is greater than the debt, the Estate is considered solvent. It might not be liquid assets, but is still considered assets.
It's been a year since my Dad passed away, & we still haven't been able to close the Estate because there isn't enough money to pay all of his debt out of the Succession account. I inherited his car & it's been registered in my name since a month after he passed away because it's legal to do that with vehicles in my state as long as you have a will. However, the bill collectors are saying the Estate is solvent because of the house & the car. They speak out of both sides of their mouth. On the one hand they say it's an attempt to collect a debt from the Estate & that I'm not personally responsible for his debt. However, they've got a claim with the Estate. which means it can't be closed until the debt is paid. Guess what that means? My brother & I ARE personally responsible for paying his debt! We can't legally do anything with the property until the Estate is settled, & it can't be settled until it's paid. Ascension Point would be quite happy for me to sell the car that I inherited from my Dad in order to pay his debt - nevermind that it's legally registered & titled to ME now!
Bottom line, just because you didn't know that your deceased relative had debt doesn't mean that they didn't.- Caller: Ascension Point
