- kerryi had a voice mail from this number, it said my full name but i didnt ring the number they gave, incase it was fraudulentso i rang the main alliance and leicester number 08448009000 and they confirmed that it was the security department that had left the automated message. they rang to confirm some large internet payments were made by me. which is an excellent service i think
- Caller: alliance and leicester / santander
- nellie replies to Andyyes, I also have an unlisted number and yet received this call where they know my name
- KirstyThis is not a hoax call, if you get the message from them call them back, the run through some transactions on your account and you have to confirm wether they are genuine or not. Its for your own security and would be daft to ignore it.
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- NatalieI was very skeptical of this as well, so I rang my local branch and they put me through to Customer Services. Turns out my bout of Christmas shopping online was 'irregular activity' to them, so I had to confirm transactions before they would reactivate my account in five minutes.
I agree, it's a good service, I just hope I don't have to do this every time I make several transactions. - SimonThis Alliance and Leicester Fraud Department. They spotted a bum payment on my debit card and after I had phoned through to their customer services department to check the number, they were very helpful at getting the transaction denied.
- Caller: Alliance and Leicester
- EmpressaliI, too, received an automated message asking me to contact Alliance & Leicester Fraud Dept. I returned the call and spoke to an Indian lady who asked me for my card details which I refused to give. I offered my name and postcode and she was unable to retrieve my details. I refused to speak to her further and she got really stroppy. I rang Santander direct who transferred me to the Fraud Dept. The very helpful lady couldn't confirm that 08453512290 was a legit Santander number. She did say however that my account was showing some 'flags' because of a lot of recent activity - some paypal transactions in particular. What a surprise - a lot of activity at Christmas time! None of the transactions were fraudulent, but they had blocked my card. Hope this doesn't happen every Christmas. Santander had better sharpen up a bit or I can see a lot of customers jumping ship.

- Not The DeceasedLong story, my mother (now deceased) received some bumf from Privacy Guard via Barclaycard which I shredded and told her npt to apply for. She was signed up anyway and they refused to cancel her "account".
She lost her card and Barclaycard's first contact was a snotty youth who refused to cancel her card and refused to transfer us to a supervisor or manager. Second call we got someone sensible who issued a replacement card.
When this arrived we had to call a number which turned out not to be Barclaycard but Privacy Guard again, only trading under a different name, and she was signed up AGAIN.
We cancelled her card after which we were bombarded with calls from 08448466529 claiming to be everyone from a debt consolidation agency to a government department.
We have also been bombarded with calls from witheld numbers and 000, and also with email spams which I suspect but can't prove are all to adresses for which we used her card.
Now my mother has died we are getting calls from the above number asking for someone who has never lived here and has never owned this phone number.
I have no option but to believe that either Barclaycard sold her information on the open market, or they sold it to Privacy Guard who sold it on the open market, and this is just the latest in a long series of scams.
Have any of the rest of you been hit by Privacy Guard or other Affinion companies? - chryslerjo replies to bfcI got this automated message on my moile this morning. So I called my bank direct and they said it was a genuine call and they checked through several transactions on my account.
But don't ever give details out if someone calls you - always call your bank direct yourself. - lynetteIt is genuine, I got a call from them today, its an automated call and you do not have to give any information appart from to choose from 3 different options which one is your month and year of birth and then to key in your day of birth as a security check. It then lists the last few transactions on your card and asks if you made them. It does NOT ask for your card details, security number or pin number.
- Caller: Alliance and leicester
- shazzyThis is genuine, and it is the fraud department at alliance leicster,i was also sceptical because of all the hoaxers out there,so i went through the bank itself and they put me through to fraud department whod noticed a few transactions,Amazon came up a few time, but i have orderer a few things of amazon,im amazed to read how many of these people have had the calls when theyve used amazon, anyhow its good that theyre keeping an eye on our accounts.
This is GENUINE, get it sorted even if you fone the bank directly, otherwise they will put blocks on your account, ive just had to get mine unblocked.- Caller: alliance leicster fraud department
- SegmondThis is a legitimate number. After receiving 2 calls from this number I also called 0116 201 1000 and got through to Santander (Liverpool accents!). They did security checks and then put me through to their security team. More security checks and they then listed my most recent transactions. Turns out my account had been put on hold pending these checks so I would strongly advise giving them a call. They advised that they are making a lot of these standard checks at the moment because of the high rate of fraudelent online activity. Don't ignore or you could find your card refused the next time you try to use it.
- gingerit is alliance and leicester or santander as they are now. they have started using automated telephone calls to verify transactions. i cut the call off being suspicious and rang customer services back who put me through to the fraud department and they went through some previous transactions with me. apparently it was buying something on amazon online that triggered it.maybe have a fraud problem?? by the way if you google saynoto0870 you can get a freephone number with the same menu as the pricey 0844 one.
- Caller: alliance and leicester
- AdamThis number is spam. Missed the call and when i called back the automated message asked me if I, or a member of my family, had ever been involved in an accident. If so, I would be entitled to compensation.
- Caller: Where there is blame there is a claim
- TejNOT A SCAM.
I got the call soon after i used my card, rang Santander back and they confirmed that my account had been flagged.- Caller: Santander
- StaceIt is genuine.
I got a recorded message as well so went to the A&L (well, Santander) website and rang CS, advised them I'd got a call and wanted to check if it was genuine or report it if not, transferred me straight to the fraud team and after passing security he told me my card was blocked because of some suspicious transactions, he ran through them and I told him which were correct and got my account all unblocked.
I didn't notice at first, but I tried to buy something online earlier and it declined, thought nothing of it and used another card, so I'm glad I got the call and checked here or I wouldn't have noticed till I was out in town tomorrow.- Caller: Santander
- Louise Jackson| 1 replyI checked with Alliance and Leicester (santander) this is DEFINATELY a scam. They also say they dont use 0845 numbers for the fraud department - so that's always a good way to tell
- Call type: Prank
- NikhowTHIS NUMBER IS OK !!!!!!!!!
I can confirm that this is a GENUINE number from A & L .Santander.
After security check, their system asks you to confirm or not, a transaction you have made online to a known 'dodgy' site.
It does this EVERY month for my monthly subscription to www.jmeeting.com for example.heheheh
I've had 30 years (yes really 1980 ! ) of using online transactions and NEVER been scammed.
This is an OK number and protects you. - Nikhow replies to Louise JacksonI dont know who you were to talking to mate !!!!!

the reason they are rining is as an addes protection for peoples accounts.- Caller: alliance and leicester
- EvilJonnyThis call was genuine, I didn't ring back on the number on the automated line I called the main Customer services number who confirmed it was real. They put me through to the fraud department who confirmed some payments and read out some payments made on my account, there were fraudulent ones so my card has been canceled.
Whether you believe the call or not just phone the main customer services number to be sure.- Caller: Alliance and Leicester/Santander
